Family life in Almeria dedicated to our off grid life in rural Almeria Province.
We are a normal everyday family who left the UK to start a new life off grid in Spain.
It is tough at times and stressful but it can also be very rewarding, we chose to live off grid and be self sufficient.
We have our own water source, a good solar set up, grow our own vegetables and have lots of fruit and nut trees. We also have approx 100 olive and 100 Almond trees.

We live in the "Campo" or Countryside and it's amazing how many wild food sources grow naturally. From Berries to Funghi and Asparagus to herbs. Today I take a look at what I can find growing in the extreme heat of summer and in an area without any rain for around 100 days!!!!

Our mulberries are ready and this is a superb recipe to use up some of the delicious berries. If you don't have Mulberries then you can use Strawberries, Blackberries or blueberries. This recipe uses Lactose free yoghurt and Gluten free oats but you can use standard variations. We use our own honey to add sweetness. A very easy to make and delicious breakfast

What is a saltana?, you layered them in with plum, then pricked…et added brandy, etc..

This is great. I was aLways told that if you put fresh herbs and fresh garlic into this type of preserving that you could get botulism. I would use dried herbs to be on the safe side or jar plainly and dress them as I needed them. Thank you.
Hello. I'm new to beekeeping and live near to Motril. We brought 2 langstroth hives & a swarm trap from the UK. 2 Weeks ago we set them up and now we have all 3 occupied and bringing pollen in. I've seen some new layens hives for sale in San Isidro de Nijar which are on mil anuncios. My question is, how do you stop the queen laying on certain frames? We have queen excluders on the langstroths but how does it work with layens and also using supers. Anyways from twins originally from Burnley. Living here for 6 years. It would be nice to possibly pop by and have a yarn. We will be heading to san Isidro within the week if your not far and interested to chat? Many thanks. Daniel

i was wondering when you compared beteween the price at the supermarket and the money you earned. They sell almonds in the shell or already peeled? Im asking because I only see almonds already peeled at the SM.
Yes, already processed, clean, discard bad ones, packaging, transport,display, etc. But for this price a kg, I shall it good.

@ Norman Seagull unfortunately due to our location it is too far for most people to Travel and we don't have a enough time to make deliveries. We have something planned involving our fresh produce and cooking for the near future. Thanks

Hi @ Yoeyes Wide shut if you are just looking for rustic land to create a garden and orchard then in our area you can find lots of land, if you are looking for something with a house then you will need closer to 60,000 Euros

@@familylifeinalmeriaspain226 it was 10.30.we got past the marble mine and got flashed by a traffic car and told the road was closed and to turn round. We had to go on to almeria so was a major de tour.
I still can't believe all this stuff grows in Spain. I recently learned that mangoes and avocados grow there as well. I have yet to see a papaya tree. Do you have to worry about poisonous snakes in the region?
Mangoes and avocados grow mainly in the Malaga region. Here in Almeria it's mainly citrus fruit, Almonds and Olives. No we haven't seen any poisonous snakes yet. We just have the standard grass and water snakes on our land and a good few in our pond.

It depends on how much you want to run on the system but 20,000 Euros seems a bit steep even for a top of the range system. Good luck with your new installation.

How do you manage pests?
Do you mean pests on the trees? If so we we mix water with sugar and vinegar and hang in bottles on the tree. You may be able to see them on our fruit trees.

How many trees for 88 Kg of almonds in the shell? Also wondering how much is shall compared to the kernel within? I have thought for some time that almonds must be the highest work for least return around here.
It depends, some years it can be 2-3 trees for 88kg. Other years it can be a lot more. Not all our trees are productive as they had not been looked after by the previous owner so we have lots of cutting to do.

Well you learnt your lesson an now to adapt. So you don't get ripped off by the greedy spanish coops. Hi have farmed almonds an olives here for 25 years. You need to get your self a drill power almond cracker.then you can start to make €12 a kilo for almonds out of the shell.selling any where out of spain.mike
Thanks Mick Balton. Yes we have learnt, Thankfully we only took a small sample from this year's harvest. We will continue to look for a more sustainable and viable way forward

I never sold my crop for this very reason. I used to harvest enough for personal use and let the rest fall to the ground for the wildlife. The boars love them. I don't have many trees left now due to a forest fire but I'm replacing them with fruit trees and other nut trees for personal consumption of the crop.
