I remember playing this game a couple years ago; super cool I was able to find this video on it. Nice work!
Thanks for watching!
I wonder how you'd fit the overt Twin Peaks references into this? First the recommendation for the cherry pie at the diner, and then Room 8 having walls covered in red drapes and a black-and-white floor.
I feel like the red rocks are more like... Protection spells? It kinda reminds me of the show FROM. The only time we dont see a house with a red rock, its filled with flipped over furniture with hundreds of photos on the ground, seemingly abandoned and/or attacked by a wild animal. The inhabitants of Bleakstead might be collecting these rocks, or the blood inside, to keep themselves safe from outside attacks, such as the tentacles. Since the rocks seem to be in different sizes in each of the hotel rooms, maybe they slowly shrink over time as they're used, and would explain why the rocks would need to be piled up and then could be distributed to the different buildings around Bleakstead.

not an insult but you sound like an older cricket green
took me 15 seconds to watch the game. Wat if u isolated the soudn files and looked at em , Ok..hear me out...what if u just ate a bunch fo nachos instead
NO, Microtransactions did not Kill Gaming Kid. Gamers killed Gaming. If all these little kids stopped buying these microtransactions, would game companies keep pumping them out? Why would they invest resources into making something that doesn't sell??
I've played it on and off since I was 7 years old, Skyrim will always be my favorite game no matter what video essayists on youtube have to say
The more i watched this the more I got the un-resistible urge to save
I'm simple I see nyarlethotep I watch hour long video
I hope this finds you all in a comfortable space & time. I am going to devote to making an independent film out of Skyrim. Main quest & all the random encounters as well as the COURIER related quests & the bounties each location has available as the film........as the film for the most part. Get in touch! 🙃
Little late for the party, but I think just the word "old ones" being mentioned and the healing flesh column being similar to Uboo-Sathla are a bit weak of linkage to conclude it's literally set in the Chthulu mythos' world. It's definitely influenced by it, but this kind of "eerie things happen involving unfathomable entity" theme with the fabled PS1-era graphics has been done to the teeth in the indie horror scene, so it's not surprising some concepts are repeated with the source material. Well, if we see it on a macroscopic level I guess we can say it's all derived from Lovecraft in the end... I think what you're trying to do here is something like Sagan Hawkes' Basilisk video? But overall it felt like the subject is "I found out Chthulu mythos exists". Understandable since this seems your first exposure to the genre, some games just straight up don't have much to talk about, and I'm sure it'll be welcome for the others that don't know well about the matter. As for myself, I expected more of a psychological and symbolic analysis video like Jacob Geller or Virtual Carbon (not saying you should change course in that direction, it was just my thought before clicking the thumbnail). Sorry if my comment sounds too snarky, and I don't want to discourage you or anything. I'm sure you put a lot of effort into this video and hope you keep up the good work.
Thanks, I really appreciate the comment! The current video I've been working on will definitely fall into the lines of a psychological analysis and delving into symbolic meanings. I'm very excited for it

you say 'malignant' when talking about the great old ones, and i wondered if you instead meant 'malevolent' but thought it was an apt misspeaking, and then before making this comment i thought to look it up (instead of making a fool out of myself(glad i did)) and apparently the word is used at least once by lovecraft himself. Huh. Though it doesn't seem to be very common. Anyway, not sure where I was going with that. it just really struck me for some reason.
Yeah, a huge part I love about making these types of videos is learning more vocabulary words and knowledge in general :)
@@Fuzduf A thought just occured to me, actually...when was 'malignant' first used to describe cancer? Ten minutes of googling later, and I have decided that the history of the word is a rabbit hole way too deep to get into at 8pm at night LOL. i did however see it described as a synonym for malevolent. The circle is complete.
This video is such high quality. Please make more videos like this, I enjoy watching people analyze obscure videogames
Thank you for the encouraging comment! And yes, I am working on more! :)

Azathoth isn't dreaming up reality, The reason they're keeping him asleep is that once he wakes up he’ll eat everything, and the dreaming-up reality thing belongs to another character that's confused for Azathoth for some reason(not even in the same book)’
Source: how powerful is azathoth
wow
I get why it's done because the current youtube algorithm is ass but I wish these types of videos were just presented as a game breakdown/analysis instead of being like "The darkest secret hidden (thing) you've never watched/played/read!" it's kinda hard to differentiate between a video about something actually mysterious and one about a semi-obscure indie game now, it almost feels like soon I'm gonna be seeing videos like that about the lisa games for being dark indies or even something more overtly game-y like cultic for having a unique creepy art style Don't get the idea I dislike this video solely because of that little tangent though, I actually think this is a pretty good video and has more to say than most videos with that type of presentation.
I wholeheartedly agree with you actually, and I really appreciate you watching! With a game like Bleakstead, that's very unheard of, I felt it would be very difficult to frame the title in the way you described, and it perform well. Although I completely agree with your point entirely. But I'm curious, can you prove me wrong? And if you can, please send me some other videos / creators that make these types of videos! I love learning from others!
How do you know it was pissing distance buddy?????? You went there and pissed? Unlieky honestly, im so sick of people making uneducated hyperbolic claims to gain cheap views. Grow up buddy.
The Fog Is Coming.
An interesting thing in the Cthulhu Mythos is that Dreams aren't necessarily imaginary. The Dreamlands are a place, and though most only go there in mind or spirit, and fewer still strongly enough to see beyond their own reveries, one can go there in the flesh, so even if it was 'all just a dream', it might be quite real. It's very possible that the protagonist is like the one from 'The Shadow over Innsmouth'. I'd recommend reading it, since it might actually be quite applicable. And also, the thing about Dead Old Ones is that it's not always as thorough or permanent as we might conceive.
I love bleakstead
As soon as you mentioned that ancient texts would make the *lucky few* go mad when they see it, it all clicked for me. The character, the place, why they don't question it, why it says "you're finally here" and "welcome home"....either this player was expected, and perhaps playing into "lost lamb" type allegory for cults, or that they were kind of...pulled into this realm as they got close, because the town could sense they were special. And once the character is there, they immediately understand the whispers and what is going on, perhaps on a subconcious level. I noticed the player character seems almost *comfortable* doing all this, even if the player isn't. Very interesting game
dude the background music during the later half of this video was pissing me off because i kept thinking i knew what it was then i was like "nahhh it cant be its just some random no copyright sound type music" THEN I REALIZED I WAS RIGHT AND ITS FUCKING SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT
HAHAHA! I gotta sneak more songs in future videos like that
4:36 in I cannot proceed I’ve already lost too many brain cells
I feel you man, my brain is cooked from TikTok too.
Not the whole "unsolvable mystery" being it being a lovecraftian story lol. Every indie horror game is pretty much a cosmic horror thing these days, this isn't that confusing or weird
"... Back then video games weren't shit out every year for a quick buck, they were hand crafted with heart and soul ... " directly followed by " ... people didn't comprehend the impact Skyrim® had on the gaming industry as a whole... " is just top level irony. Like yes, bethesda had a vision for this game, the "keep it simple, stupid" idea of dumbing everything "RPG" down (even more then Oblivion did) in an RPG game and populating wast open world with monotonous slop content for you to fast travel between (even more then Oblivion did) smeared with mind numbing encounter scaling system (somehow little less egregious then the one in Oblivion, some praise here). And its success changed the industry a lot, even the wildly praised elden ring you have shown as an example of a better modern game is contaminated with the cursed DNA of useless open fields with hordes of mobs and trash loot. I hope there will be something in the video for me to completely rewrite my comment but from the intro alone it seems unlikely.
Something I think you missed and, to me, stands out so much that it can't have been a mistake. The first two Rune messages are written in the first person, yet the third is in third person. Who or whatever wrote the last message was not a part of the group from the first two. Thinking about what the last message said, it gives the impression that the writer (possibly part of a group themselves), was an observer. So, what other evidence is there of there being 2 groups? The two women. While we never find the photographer, the two women are not clearly different from the other "people" the player interacts with. Further more, the diray entries uses "the old ones," not "one" or "one's." What caused the Matriarch to "pass on," though? That may be a missing piece. If the worshippers of The Matriarch of Dirt were expecting her to return, why would they defile her body by bleeding the stones? And why are there a bunch of red rocks? Her blood became the river, not stone. What about the small red rocks? Yes, what about them? Surely the Dirt worshippers aren't drawing the life healing blood to waste it on painting rocks. They bottle it after all and it's implied to be a panacea. I believe the red rocks are the mark of whatever overthrew the Matriarch. The statues aren't of her, but whatever the red rocks represent. It either put the Matriarch down or it came later and prevented her return. It would be hard to come back when your body is constantly being cut and bled to bathe the strange rock in the life of the Matriarch and the static people are doing it in the name of their Old One. The road was built in the 50s, but the Other Old One made it's in the 70s and when you have Eldritch ambitions and goals, you're not going to worry too much about what isn't a direct benefit. Technology doesn't help them bleed the Matriarch to strengthen the Other. I can see how muddle timelines could make it difficult for an Old One to return from where/when/whatever wence, I just don't see it being the simplest answer. After all, the first interaction we are told about with the Matriarch was her calling out to (potential) followers, while laying in a pool of her own blood. How? Why? She was attacked by the Other. To me, this explanation fits so much more snuggly than overlapping timelines and a town that has been taken over by a malicious cult could just as easily ignored uodating to constantly evolving tech if it didn't help them advance their own goals. Though, I will admit, there is a massive hole in this hypothesis. It fits so nicely, were it not for that one thing.
first off, english isnt my native english. that being said, im writing this without having finished the video, but since you made this a recurrent topic, old tvs on and "dying" "town" as a note implies will not make me think a lot about that, maybe because im not murrican nor i do live in murrica, if im having a motel on the side road to nowhere where more likely people that stop by is doing sketchy things in the middle of the desert i will not invest in new tv, i will stay with the ones i got when the bussines was actually profitable. so i dont feel like people playing video games and a abandoned laptop makes me think on these things are out of place when having non flatscreen tvs. ps: ty for introducing me to bleakstead.

@Anonymality It's probably because I over edited my audio, cutting out most pauses between sentences, leaving it to sound really unnatural. This is a huge mistake on my part that I'm working really hard to correct in the next video :)
My gf at the time bought this for me accidentally. And here I am, still playing. FOURTEEN YEARS LATER
It’s not creation engine. They just need to get the game design right for es6
Two nights ago, I started the game again, after what must have been ten years and it feels brand new all over again. I had watery eyes when the score kicked in during vistas, reminding me of a time in my life when I first played it. It was welcome as I am at a new time of my life, but it was good to have Lydia back by my side again. Last night I baited the Saints to a pair of giants who made them kiss the sky, I never knew I could do that and I’m glad seeing an enemy get catapulted into the air still gives me joy.
Putting 1-5 points into stats to make your attacks stronger is no different than perks. It's simpler and dumbs it down to click number, but no wannabe TES boomers are able to understand this. Old stats are inferior
"Back then [2011] video games weren't made for the sake of making money and being shit out every year for a quick buck" As someone who has been a gamer since the early 90's, and who worked in the industry, I cannot overstate how _wrong_ this opening statement is.
No way my video just stopped and started buffering right at 2:04 making me think the video just went silent after that.
For the record, the horror in cosmic horror is not about the unknown, it's about cosmic indifference. Cthulhu and his mates aren't innately evil, or good, but are completely beyond such concepts. The madness is caused by seeing or knowing things the human brain is simply not designed to deal with.
Just a small nitpick, but you took some subtle shots at Cyberpunk 2077? Most people (in it's current state) would put that right up there with RDR2.
