Yeh guys! Nice work
I love the details of shape choices check out the board i designed called the float and let me know if u like it and i will send the detailed dimensions
I use the last version DW18 for light wind winging and it so good. I use that board more than wing specific board even in 15kt. The new DW looks sick.
yeah i love my dw boards for winging too! The 7'0 at 95L is my new everything board :D
Can,t wait to get my 8.4x20x125l (100kg guy, but found my 7.6x23x137l on the corky side)
Interested to hear how the 12L drop goes for you. I know the newer longer skinnier version will be better though!
I loved the look of Marcus’s board in Perth during the races 🤙🤙
You gotta have a try thats for sure!
@ keen
what a great chat
Epic
Awesome concept that'll be a big hit I reckon 🤙
Sounds so good, if i lived in Aus would definitely join...the flat water and surf sup racing is really a cool idea would be so much fun!
Yesss love this, racing is sick but there’s a heaps of crew sup surfing and down winding freestyle that can enter these events 👍
Sup foiling
I don’t think I’ll make this one, I had pencilled it in to my plans. As you point out though, it’s a bit of a trick only being one day to find wind. I’ll be watching along though! And training for M2O 🤙🤙
@@downwind_drifter three events I’m discussing in this one. Are you not coming to any of them?
@@jamescasey7393 Researching them further now (thankfully my partner is now helping) I had thought it was one event on the 18th… If I can I’ll come support 🤙🤙
Love this
Code and QLD missed ya in WA mate! See you at the next one
Very keen to learn dw foiling but I have a loooong way to go.
Quickest way speed up that looooong way to go is by doing it. Start learning now all you need is water deep enough to paddle your board and foil around in.
That’s hilarious, I just got 10 x 51st 🤣😂 would maybe taking the average time be better to fill in numbers? Good thoughts though!
No Tom you placed a very respectable 49th. The only team that got 10 x 51st did not turn up at all and you beat them so well done for flying the flag for VIC! Average time doesn't help encourage all participants. A lot of teams would've been better taking average time (or average point score) rather than filling up all 10 spots. To grow the sport we need a decent penalty for not having a full team.
@ awesome, thanks mate, I can feel the shock wave of fear ripple through to the 48th spot for next year! Cheers for update!
Excuse me James….. but what dimensions are you rocking here? Thanks if able to answer
This is a 4’5 pilot from Sunova
He is Smoking...
Especially love the start with th great Ocean colours and iconic containers in the background.
Great footage, looks like some super fun conditions.
Hi there my name is po how are you today?
I'm good mate, hope you're well too
I'm doing well thanks
In WA it feels like things are just starting so i think low fees to get the community involved and used to the events is a good thing. Having some events with a range of media coverage would be good. This would show people where their money could go. I dont rate high prize money much.
I agree most events should be grass roots style with low entry fees. There should then be one or two a year that are the big ones though and I think media budget and prize money is a good thing to have. It should not be for every event though
Awesome, great to see the numbers competing and skill level, we got some catching up to do here in Cape Town :)
Super interested in this one and to hear what the community see as being most valuable. As a brand sponsoring events, we'd love to see what the community would like to see more of, that way we can support these events better in a way that adds more value to the sport, the event and it's exposure in a useful way. There's so much stoke at these events, coverage is a great way to put a highlight on a location and make those who could come feel more connected with the sport as a whole. We've made a few post event videos that not only focus on the sport but the location and the people
Yeah the you guys, the team at Foil Drive, have been so supportive of events and I really think its important for sponsors to get the most bang for their buck to help grow the sport. Thanks for all you do and I hope this discussion helps organisers make the most out of sponsorships
Hi James, thanks for the great content, would you share the specs of the board you were using here?
my vote is for getting money toward event media packages, let's grow the sport.and show that its exciting to watch
Nice one Dan, yeah I think growing the sport is important atm so lets get event media packages going to show how much fun we are having!!
wow, thats looks crazy. How is your speed in that conditions?
Speed varied, the footage is from multiple races and DW runs. Generally average speeds were around 28km/h to 22km/h ball park. Top speeds I never really look at but I might've gotten close to cracking 40km/h on one of the windier days but more like 30-35km/h for the standard days.
I like the idea of tallying regional team scores, and keep the scoring that it keeps the outcome as competitive as possible while still keeping good participation points. With the UK SLSC Masters contests they overdo it a bit, where you have the events won on the margins by whoever can bring the most old people which is pretty cool but leads to less interesting outcomes. I'd take Dan's list, figure out what weighting would retrospectively give the closest results, and then use that as a basis for ongoing contests, and keep tweaking it to keep it competitive and interesting.
What do you reckon about the safety of the beach sprint? seems like a safety thing both the dismount and the sprinting on the beach both being pretty dangerous for little addition to the contest
great vibes on those events, will be back ! looking forward to have you guys in France to share some more runs together .
Was awesome to have you join! Let's see if we can get more international riders next year
Good to see you guys crushing in person. Respect 🤙🤙
Nice to meet you too mate. Stoked you came over from NZ and looking forward to your next DW Drifter Perth episode!
When will it be available on youtube ?
trying to organise another screening in Sydney before Xmas so I'd say Game Face will be live on TH-cam by the end of the year
Is 30k starting to become a standard length of race?
I'd say there is no standard atm. The races in Perth were 12 and 22 kilometres, Sunshine coast 30km, Hawaii is 12, 45 and 60 kilometres. No standard and I'm not so sure we need a standard length race either
Is there age groups?
💯 need age groups
There is not but it sure would be interesting! I think we are at the stage that introducing age groups would be very interesting
Good beta, thanks. See you tomorrow 🤙🤙
Very good to hear the expert opinion, thank you!
Thanks for watching and I hope it helps you with your decision!
Is there a deck pad option?
I'd personally like to see DW events with plenty of variety, e.g. beach start/finish, potential flat water sections, achievable checkpoints to navigate around, straight DW sections... Given the high cost associated with these events, I'd want maximum bang for buck - an experience to remember. I'm with you JC 👍
Thanks for letting me know your thoughts. I think in a few years it'll be a thing. At the moment it seems people just want to go as fast as they can in the good sections, I believe it will come full circle and the 'old' M2O course may just become the 'new' M2O course. Time will tell!
What volume is your board?
4'10 x 21.5 and 60L, Aciator Wing by Sunova
Must be Josh Ku music…
haha getting all jazzed up
What axis foil would work in very slow conditions like this?
Hard to say but I'd assume 1401ART Pro or 1180 Spitfire
interesting view between the banister at end there, deliberate bit of cinematography ?
You’ll have to ask the drone pilot 🤣
Hello James ,which Code foil do you use ? Thanks
1300S, MF, 150AR and 85cm mast. I actually mentioned it in the audio of the video but you may have missed it
He’s standing in front of a green screen it looks like, at times it looks like he’s not even on a foil. He is so good and chill to the point of it looking fake! Haha!
haha dont tell anyone!
Great video. My light wind endeavours are essential with work and family. I either go when it light or not at all. So, bring on the big foil!
I'd love to see DW racing like ski racing. Multiple styles within the racing scope. Shorter faster turning "slalom" races, and longer bigger traversing "super G" or "downhill" races. A back and forth race where some gates are harder to make as they're more upwind/uphill.. it would make it exciting to watch with all the competitors having to round the gates which funnels people together and creates inside/outside lanes. And is easier to follow as a spectator then a hundred guys downwinding down the open ocean.
Added to which... competitors may like it because there would be a "slalom" individual champion and "super g" champion as well as overall champion. It would allow athletes to specialize in a particular discipline. Anyhow, there's my 2 cents. And yes, it's still downwinding if you can utilize bumps.. the limit is when you can't ever rest on a wave without pumping for.. say 30 seconds?
The voyager Flow Show will be formatted exactly like this
@@voyagerfoiler5976 love that. Pave the way!
Great thoughts. Interesting definition of downwind foiling; whether we like it or not that 30 seconds of rest on the wave without pumping is not/was not really a thing in racing whilst over in WA, even with great conditions for all racing. If you were cruising on a bump for 30 seconds you were falling behind, kinda exactly the reason I want races to mix it up a little with flatter starts and finishes, some hard traversing etc. as it will make you think about foil choice a bit more than just going the smallest and fastest you have.
How good is that set up 👏👏🤯💥👍 looking good mad dog 👍
That looks good, 20kn down to 10kn is not bad at all especially in ocean. I'd be genuinely interested in how you get on doing a 10+ km bay run 1-2kn wind flat water pump on the SUP (or even doing laps), is that easy for a pro level rider? The SUP pro race crew at Crozon made it look easy, but most were very light, ultra fit. If the idea is to cater to the median rider skill to make the events economically viable then that maybe changes the question, if it is purely pro riders (how many are there? 10?) then yes run it in whatever.
That's where different events targeting different riders will start to pop up. The dutch downwind event I'm organising caters for all levels. For that reason we are running with a minimum wind requirement. With the risk we don't run (like this year, we postponed to spring). Crozon wasn't 1-2kn might I add. The first race was light, my 960R was too small and I regretted not taking my 1300S. Second race where I placed 11th with the 1300S was like 12knots I think, could have probably used my 1130S. I'm not super light (78kg), or super (pro level) fit (I am decently fit though). The gear choice is critical. I think James makes a good point that with the right gear, a much wider range of conditions become rideable for a bigger range of skill levels
If you're riding bumps it's a DW run I reckon! Racing and free ride will de-couple (sort of instagram vs reality moment). But I agree. Permits and event windows mean we need to also open up to the low wind side of the sport as well as the high wind / high speed side everyone froths on. It's actually more amazing to see how little wind we can still go in
Well put, bumps of any size make it downwind. Sometimes you just need to go slower to realise the bumps are there to be used
Nice board I ride usually a 5.10 x 20 with 95 l mid length. I am 83 kg which size would you recommend as a Allrounder ? Regards
If you're looking at the PILOT MID I'd suggest the biggest one, 6'5 x 19 at 68L, what you lose in buoyancy you will gain in water line. If you want that volume I'd suggest the CARVER 5'10 x 20 at 85L. The PILOT MID will be better for foil surfing and the carver better for winging.
We need to respect and encourage the culture that got us here. We are two cycles from this being the thing. Don’t rush but pull the rest along, if you can see the future respect the past.
Well said, we can still try to get things going in the meantime. Utilise existing events, create a leaderboard and create a bit more media coverage. What do you think?
@@jamescasey7393 agreee, we are in the perfect position now to create a really cool framework to build a tour on as the sport grows!
