Final verdict: 70/100 . Not bad, but it also highlights the past and current problems of The Clone Saga and modern American comics that started to pop up. So not great either. Nor am I a big fan of this Clone Saga, particular era of American comics partly, because I never actively lived the 90's.

This story's cover caption did have it right, after all, this was sure to become a classic. Ah, you beat me to it - the Fiddler's Fiddler Car is something. I don't remember seeing that in the Batman: The Brave and the Bold animated series. I wouldn't have necessarily taken you right off for being a Beach Boys fan. When I was young, and more of those band members were still around and in musician-capable condition, my dad listened to them at home as one of his musical staples. Anyway, thanks a lot for going through and showing all viewers this important classic of such a Golden vintage. Prime art and writing. Great choice and coverage, TSPH...have an excellent day!
I continue to enjoy each of these issues' distinctions during this storyline. Not one but a trifecta of classic villains. I'm aware of all three of them, both in comics form and through animated treatments. The Shade is the villain of this trio whom I have had the most exposure to and appreciation for. I first knew him through the Justice League (later season[s], named “Justice League Unlimited”) animated series. As with veritably everything else from that series, I quite enjoyed that portrayal. Have you watched much of that very well-done Warner Bros. animation, TSPH? This part was the peak of fun in this plot so far, of course, with Garrick the original back in action and the trio of familiar faces set to terrify the populace and trounce the speedsters. What terrific writing and art - peak comic book-ing. Thanks again for featuring this, TPSH, be well and have a great day.
@mikefanofGDNgenuinedarksyde703 I watched every single episode. Including Batman Beyond. But it is not my favourite version of the Shade
The Flashes are cutting it close, with their rescue of the would-be victim in the cover's image. Such a classic lineart style, that should not have been abandoned. The lightning “flash”, “CRAASH!”, that hits Barry looks very painful. But, being a cop, he can recover soon enough to run away from a car, two panels later 😛. Fun, and obviously historic first meeting between these two Flashes, and the comparing of their origins. Reinvigorating Jay to return to his hero role, coinciding with the character's return to publishing, served this part well, too. Again, I'm glad that you're showcasing this vintage of a stand-out issue. Thanks, TSPH, and have a good day!
Still very awesome, , , thanks SPOREHACKER 🏆🥧🥧😸👍👍
I have always liked that cover, I think it would make a great addition to cover battle. Is it just me or did older comics take longer to read? I think they had more dialog or maybe it was the narration?
@@CaptainFrugalReviews personally I think the amount of dialogue remained more or less consistent as far as my limited knowledge about American comics goes. But the ones that I read from the 60's to let's say late 80's, begin 90's did have more narration to get people more invested into the story and into the characters train of thought , motives (Dream Theater reference for those of you who listen to prog). And the way the stories like this were structured. It required a little more immersion and made you think a little bit more. Which explains why they took longer to read. Because your brain needs more time to progress what is happening on the pages. Something I kind of miss with the current batch of American comics. But those are my two cents. So don't take this as an expert opinion
That being said. It makes a great addition to the cover battle videos that you are doing
@@CaptainFrugalReviews Captain I agree with you and SPORE H , , some of the earlier pictography with the less amount of spoken dialogue then allowed you the examine the panel artwork more deeply allowing your mind to connect point A to point B then to C and ect, , , everything is in such a hyper hurry in today's modern hero entertainment , , agendas added in for good measure plus political nonsense tossed in because creators can't simply calmly entertain anymore 😥🧐😢🤔🤔🤔
@@TSPH1992 It certainly would be a top contender.
Absolutely
Yes Sporehacker ,seems that retro-Marvel and retro- DC Comics are almost the only way to go for domestic heroes here in Florida , but modern Japanese Manga is very promising and related Animes of course , , when leadership finally changes at DISNEY we may finally see good projects start to appear both at Marvel and "Lucas Film" 😮😂 but when it comes to DC-Verse its mostly owned by Warner Bros soooo theres no telling how long it will take them to see the error of DC Comics related projects unfortunately , ,but thats ok Sporehacker just keep doing that important watch dog reporting and bringing indie comics into the public view , , , WYLD ELF26 definitely wishes the best for your Jaguar Warrior projects 🪐🏆🏆🏆😸👍
It needs to get worse before it gets better.
Awesome Sporehacker 🎉👍 imagine if they gave you a hosting job of morning television reading things to the Youths in your local region , , that would be EPIC , , solid video 🎃🏆🏆🏆👸👍👍
I could see myself do that in the near future during a podcast
I enjoy most watching or even at least replaying as background, longplays of the era this hails from. That is, between around 35 years ago and 20 years ago. This was fun, and you happened to choose a very suitable playlist of 'approved' instrumental BGM, too. I'm sure that one of those tracks that you played, is from the OST for The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt. Anyway, with the Sega Genesis being the first console system I owned (and I still own a system; none of these 'Mini' copycats) made it entertaining and nostalgic for me. Thanks for the flashback, and have a good day!
If you have steam. Try to purchase the SEGA megadrive and Genesis classics collection before they take it from steam. Because SEGA tends to be retarded
The crossing of worlds! A comic book dramatic equivalent to Eric Cartman's escalating “NoooOOOO...” head explosion. For every event no matter what, at least according to the covers to draw in us readers 😉. This was a joy to behold, and more so due to the fact of your physical copy of this old comic after covering the Double Dragon miniseries digitally. And I appreciate the various Flashes now more than I used to, through having expanded my DC reading. Classic storytelling and comic art-making. I'll look forward to the next one; thanks a lot, TSPH!
TWO FLASH ARE COMING
That's what she said
Hey Sporehacker , yes very awesome Golden Age Flash with metal hat versus modern day "Red Suit Flash" 😸👍👍
The helmet was deviated from Mercury. The Roman god. And its Greek counterpart Hermes
@@TSPH1992 that is Correct sir 😸👍👍
It's Medusa! Jimmy and Billy beat up on a Greek Gorgon, on the cover. Hah. Drawn borders, like have been included on the first page of each issue to this miniseries...another discarded, rejected art in the modern 'paradise'. I like how high background ninjas, Billy and Staaaaannn can jump, on that opening two-page spread. Stealth has got quite the...'outfit'. Digital patches over body parts. Still, what a creepy experience, of a final interaction with the Lees' mother's spirit through one of the boys' girlfriend. Creepy, for poor Marion. Who is 'poor Marion' for her treatment through the original arcade games. So, give her a cop laser pistol here, guys! This adaptation boasts more consistent and higher quality art than a Marvel Comics series published around 10 years later that featured in-house proprietary IP Marvel characters. Which Darksyde is comics recently reviewed over at his channel. Yeah, this was a fitting, good and entertaining “final showdown” issue and overall adaptation series. One of the most well-done comic adaptations I've ever seen. Thank you for showing it to me through your consistent reviews, TSPH. And no, you didn't butcher Bryan Baugh's name. Anyway, cheers again and have an enjoyable weekend!
@@mikefanofGDNgenuinedarksyde703 the fact that it didn't feel like a Marvel Comic was a plus. It was worth every penny that I didn't spend
I like the art style for this series, I think it fits the story well.
@@CaptainFrugalReviews it really does fit. I wish they would have gone with a little bit more baggy trousers, MMA styled suits. But that's probably because of copyright stuff. Still it's one of the better miniseries from the 90's that was not afraid to take risks
I still wish there was a trade though
Sporehacker , the cover of this issue is actually really cool 😎🏆🏆
Sporehacker it's still gets me the unusual choice of Billy and Jimmy's new Wetsuit S&M uniforms 😮🎉😂 , what were they possibly thinking 😂😊😂😂😂
@wyldelf2685 they wanted to make an American version and there was probably copyright stuff involved. Still they should have gotten the baggy trousers, mma look. No doubt
Haha, nice description of Parallaxed Hal Jordan in your “final verdict”. I keep trying but I just can't seem to like Kyle Rayner's character as the successor to the Earth Lantern role in his time period. Maybe my inability to warm up to him is due to knowing the other Lanterns first. Even Guy Gardner, for how acerbic and different from the others as he is. I don't disagree that Kyle was the lone sentinel to actually stand up in action against possessed Hal here though, not wavering from his duty and instincts. Another piece to this famously infamous story crucial to the overall history of the Green Lanterns. Typically, art is good. The writing...wobbly. Ah well, there are better Lantern stories and issues out there. Thanks for the look nonetheless, TSPH.
Sure! I commented. A viewer is gonna have to play back the live chat replay from your video premiere for my solo running commentary to read it, though. TSPH! Other than that...well, I said it all there. Thanks for covering this series!
@9:48 cool shot!! This is a fun series
@@darksydeiscomics1891 it sure was a fun series. Worth every penny that I didn't spend
@@TSPH1992 Easy pickings!
Wulf and Batsy is my favourite current horror comic book series. I've been following it since Alterna had published first-time floppy issue #1. I've also bought Mr. Baugh's FOUR graphic novels of pre-Alterna Wulf and Batsy stories from Indy Planet. Coincidentally and happily, today on Halloween, I also just received in the postal mail my much-belated package including issues #10-12! Great timing, for those and for watching your review of this fun standalone issue. There was a misunderstanding between Bryan and Pete Simeti, which I know at least Pete has addressed in a previous livestream (that had been near the beginning of this calendar year). That was what led to Wulf and Batsy and Alterna Comics parting ways, sadly. But, ever onwards. Thanks for covering a part of this terrific series. I really like Bryan's brush inking style and effects, as much for the environments and backgrounds as for any characters. He definitely gives those populating his tales unique and distinct faces. Fantastically horrific black-and-white. Happy Halloween, AJ!
@@mikefanofGDNgenuinedarksyde703 It is what it is I guess. I didn't know the full story until recently, because I don't watch livestreams and because I don't have the attention span to watch a bunch of people talk for 3 hours straight without getting distracted. I have more important things to worry about. After Bryan Baugh left and the creator of Log abandoned ship I almost forgot about the existence of Alterna. They were the only titles that stood out amongst this small publisher that deviated from the rest and brought something new. Once they left they turned into just another average American indie publisher. If it wasn't for Red Koi I would have forgotten about their existence years ago
Ah, it's simple but I do like the traditional-like Chinese border around each issue's first page. Likewise, the very first panel of this issue's opening page, of a corner of Border Park facing an adjoining residential (?) highrise under a night sky, I really like that image, too. Haha, and looking at that panel's caption, I'm only now seeing/'getting' the city's name of Oligopolis. Cheeky naming, as that was published decades before I even heard of, much less found out about, oligarchs and oligarchies. Still...these flying vehicles, complicate this story's setting/lore. But I'll not get distracted or diverted by those, moving on. “It's a good day to die”!? Does Klingon Worf - or the actor who played him, Michael Dorn - from Star Trek: TNG know about that line being used? Also hahaha: “Stan”, who kind of looks like old American film and TV actor Lee Van Cleef. Of course readers have to judge books by their covers, otherwise, how else would somebody's work catch the reader's eye, appeal to the reader and thereby inform the reader that the content could be of interest...!? I digress, merely criticizing another low-thought, long-time common expression. Yup, still good, still fun, even though something(s) about this series makes it feel like not-a-Marvel-comic. Anyway, I'll move along and see your review of the next issue, ideally tomorrow when you premiere it! Take care, TSPH.
@@mikefanofGDNgenuinedarksyde703 The fact that it feels like not-a-Marvel-comic is actually a good thing. It shows that the people involved with this mini series were willing to take risks and give their own spin to it while staying close to the source. A reader, artist and particularly writers should read, take inspiration from multiple genres and markets. Not limiting themselves to just one or 2 particular publishers or one genre that has been milked out years ago.
Yeah, what Marinus already commented on and you've already 'pinned'. This includes the involvement of Fabian Nicieza, who among other work at the time of the early-'90s was the writer for the New Warriors team of youth characters. So, I'd credit that as an asset to the easy, smooth action in this miniseries, set around two young men who are brothers. Ouch, that kick to the back of the neck. Good-looking, large action panels. Marian's surname of “Steel” is a detail that's too cheesy and that I've never seen anywhere else. She obviously needs to practice her aim at the cops' firing range, too! The story is moving along; neither stagnant nor exceeding the fantasy of the source material. It's still a decent adaptation. This could use more recognizable faces and names from the games' roster of enemies and opponents, though. Regardless, cheers TSPH, and have a good day.
Actually her last name is Steele
A change-up of interior artist(s) but it remains true to the source IP and what was drawn before. “Double Jeopardy”! - why, yes, the sensei does look like his role could be played by Alex Trebek, on that very first page. Although the villain leaders in particular are (only) somewhat more high-tech and near-futuristic than the antagonists of the games, these designs are more in line with Double Dragon Neon. Which is the LONE modern take (expanded rehash) on this property that was worth doing. Been there, done that, now 12 years ago - next! Any other near-future visible elements, such as the Lee brothers' motorbikes, are suitably mild and minimal in their immersive additions. Again, unlike that 1994 Hollywood desecration. Somehow, this video's background music is less polka and that much more like 8-bit or arcade beat-'em-up soundchips 😛. What! You're not drinking Scotch whiskey during this recording! Accht...don't like swallowing liquid campfire? A shame about the sensei but that's not unforeseen nor unusual in the archetypal lore this writing has followed the groundwork of. I like this miniseries' visuals - style(s) and designs - two for two issues, across as many lineart rosters, as well as the writing. Enough, that I'm looking this up on MyComicShop; from which, it's all readily available, complete. This has reminded me of one of the Street Fighter limited series released by Malibu at the beginning of the '90s that I had come across and picked up an issue or two of. Anyway, enough from me, thanks for showing me that this has been a worthwhile licensed adaptation so far. Take care and see you at your next one, TSPH.
@@mikefanofGDNgenuinedarksyde703 When I drink (occasionally) I usually drink Irish or Japanese whisky. Because they tend to have more flavour.
Faithful BGM!
I'm long-since familiar with - or rather, still have old, nostalgic memories of - this video game series during the end-of-'80s and early '90s. I'd forgotten about this adaptation. It's better than might have been expected. This is much more respectful and not even exploitative of the source material, like the horrible Hollywood abomination including Robert Patrick was, unleashed not long after these comics. It is simple to adapt, and do so well, and it should be. Fun, and I'll be back to check out issue #2 and all the rest that you review. Thanks, TSPH; be well!
It adds a new layer to an otherwise pretty lineair beatemup game
Honestly I think Ethan drinking and smoking crack(?) has bigger implications then we thought. Not just being old as he is, but being fired and backlisted from various comic circles, fighting with many people online. And so many other situations were slowly building up…and now we saw this
@robkuro8564 I mean. The pipe you see in the video is not the kind of pipe to smoke tobacco with. And it is made out of glass with a compartment suitable for cocaine powder, crystal meth or crack. But the point I am trying to get across is. Stay the hell away from hard drugs like cocaine, meth, crack and heroin. Because it will destroy your mind, your body and your life
Nope! Sounds like 2018 U.N. social engineering. Predictable. I, for one, will always explicitly reject it. Spinning of wheels. Trash and intentional abuse of character. Cheers, but: next!
Yeah. It's truly an art to make a 48 pages long issue where nothing happens
The 21st century cornerbox logo is an indicator/warning sign, like it or not. I'm always at least curious about the involvement of Fourth World characters, and especially characters from Apokolips. Kalibak just doesn't look right, though. Rather, more like a missplaced Wolverine the X-Man. This second(ary) version of Firestorm, I'm aware of through being introduced by his inclusion in the long “Blackest Night” storyline. He's okay but veers too close to premature “New 52” re-doing. Underwhelming, ultimately. “Placeholder” is right. The shallowness of one-dimensionality is also an impression I had from his brief, side character appearances in Blackest Night. Haha, this was apparently the final issue. Well, that's at least one negative sign, of its production. The finished art is fine in some ways, and simplistic in other regards. Basically, unimpactful. Forgettable, for the superior, initial iteration of Firestorm's own standalone title. If a reader likes Firestorm, that is. A circa 2010, DC-branded time killer. Thanks for presenting the brief diversion, TSPH. Have a good one.
More of the same. Excellence, that is. I'm not familiar enough with Mike Sekowsky's style to readily identify his work but name but I've seen the general style at least quite a bit before and it just exudes the “comic” fun of comic books. There's nothing like the giant, interstellar, flying, telekinetic, entire-team-defeating starfish. Bless Gardner Fox, I say. That code did make for some...nay, many...hilarious comics covers during the '50s, at least. The Big Two are dead. They are no longer made like this anymore. That is, for entertainment and passion for the craft. So again, here's the sequel to my thanks for covering this and giving the story and characters their due. Take care and have a terrific week, TSPH!
Well-chosen. “Classic”, late 20th century comic book creating is always reliable, and enjoyable to return to, for washing away the distaste of modern, self-effacing so-called “efforts” or even just a Peter David misstep as per your previous review. The Brave and the Bold is simply one series (and more than this first volume, I believe) that simply knew how to consistently “comic book”. I love this kind of visual entertainment; it's why I've come to prefer to read stories than attempt to watch them (especially anything...recently pushed out, I won't say “original”). Cheers for this review, TSPH, and see you at part two!
Well, even though I don't understand Dutch I still listened to you all the way through as I played this. And here is a comment, too. Proost, TSPH!
I own the first (and as far as I'm aware, only) volume of a trade paperback that collects the earliest issues beginning Peter David's run as Aquaman writer in the '90s. I admit that I barely have recollection of the contents when I did get around to going through it cover-to-cover, as I was mostly interested in the change in design that Arthur goes through after he suffers a particular, notorious bout of grievous bodily harm. “Fathered by an Atlantean wizard”. That is weird, as I've found out only since reading this that the alternate origin for Power Girl, post-Crisis as of the mid-/late-'80s was having her character be the granddaughter of an Atlantean wizard...!? The visual artistic talent begins overall good-to-great, but it too seems to take a turn slightly for the worse - with a bit more of Erik Larsen injected, or something - in the second half of this issue. I agree with you, this is ultimately a letdown for Peter David's reputation as writer. Maybe he just didn't suit this character. I think he had just departed his run as longest-ever for any writer of The Incredible Hulk. Ah well, I know that this run of Aquaman was ultimately, eventually well-regarded. I appreciate you taking a look at both this vintage and this often mishandled DC Comics character, TSPH. Be well and have a great day!
The cover is good and the comic has fun action

Yeah. THAT's what you need, Lord Hoarder. How are those legions of Legion of Super Heroes floppies doing? 😁👍🤪
Keep at it ! You will really enjoy this title especially if you put in the effort to finish it. I just beat this game today. Never beat it as a youngster back in the early 90's

Absolutely.
You can't go wrong with a classic.
Indeed. I wish Americans just stuck with this cartoonish style instead of the ultra realistic thing that came later
A true classic story! WW should fly the jet right through that thing's eye, LOL.
@@CaptainFrugalReviews That would have been the ultimate ending. But since that stupid comic book code authority was in effect it was up to manga to perfect that idea and put it in practice many years later
“Although I understood nothing, this was very interesting!” (the written Dutch language text, is what I mean by that; I understand the rest of comic book reading just fine). You've shown an interesting menagerie from the European market and its more recent history. Nice spread, TSPH, particularly for some of the non-priced books!
By the way, Jeffrey Dahmer was a notorious, serial killing cannibal in Canada who was caught and put on sensationalist trial in the '90s. He'd lured young men, and body parts were discovered in his apartment refridgerator and freezer. He was eventually murdered in prison. Gritty political intrigue here, otherwise!
That's f'd up.
I forgot about this series. I think Aquaman is a challenging character to write since many people have such a negative view of the character. The writer has a lot to overcome to make the character seem cool. Thanks for the shout-out as well! I expect better from Peter David as well.
You can not convince me that the second half was a good idea.
Keeping it old-fashioned, I would forget if I didn't write my main points down. It is nice having comic discussions without it leading to political arguments. Thanks for the shout-out as well! The art style fits the tone of the comic well.
@@CaptainFrugalReviews it's a hidden gem for sure
@CaptainFrugalReviews I only used some short notes, because it was not really needed to make big ones. The next upload will include a little more political elements due to the nature of the mini series, but I am aware some past conflicts are a little more complex
Looks like gritty balls to the walls action book. I might pick this up
@@darksydeiscomics1891 if you want to read something different from American superhero stories. This might be your thing. But there will be a lot of swearing in it. Because it tends to be 18+ and it is war, military. So don't expect it to be a good vs bad superhero story. The lines are a little more blurred
