Wicked (titled onscreen as Wicked: Part I) is a 2024 American musical fantasy film directed by Jon M. Chu and written by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox. It is the first of a two-part film adaptation of the stage musical Wicked by Stephen Schwartz and Holzman, loosely based on the 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire.[1] The film stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande,[b] with Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum in supporting roles.[7] Set in the Land of Oz, largely before Dorothy Gale's arrival from Kansas, the film covers the musical's first act. It follows the student Elphaba beginning her path to becoming the Wicked Witch of the West, and her unlikely friendship with her classmate Galinda, who becomes Glinda the Good Witch of the North.[8]
Universal Pictures and Marc Platt, who both produced the stage musical, announced the film adaptation in 2012. After a long development and multiple delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Chu was hired to direct, with Erivo and Grande cast in 2021. The film was split in two to avoid cutting plot points and to expand the journeys and relationships between the characters. Principal photography on both films began in December 2022 in England, but was disrupted in July 2023 due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, and concluded in January 2024.
Wicked premiered at the State Theatre in Sydney, Australia, on November 3, 2024, and is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on November 22, 2024. It received positive reviews, with praise for direction, performances (particularly Erivo, Grande and Bailey), emotional weight, humor, production values, and faithfulness to the source material; the cinematography, visual effects, and runtime received criticism. Wicked Part Two is scheduled for November 21, 2025.
Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba Thropp, a misunderstood young woman born with green skin who later becomes the Wicked Witch of the West
Karis Musongole as young Elphaba
Ariana Grande[b] as Galinda Upland, a popular young woman who later becomes Glinda the Good Witch of the North
Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero Tigelaar, a Winkie prince who meets Elphaba and Galinda at school
Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, the Dean of Sorcery at Shiz University
Jeff Goldblum as The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, an ordinary man from Omaha, Nebraska who accidentally came to Oz by hot air balloon and became the land's mysterious ruler
Ethan Slater as Boq Woodsman, a Munchkin in love with Galinda
Marissa Bode as Nessarose Thropp, Elphaba's paraplegic younger sister who later becomes the Wicked Witch of the East
Cesily Collette Taylor as young Nessarose
Peter Dinklage as the voice of Doctor Dillamond, a goat and history professor at Shiz University
Bowen Yang as Pfannee, one of Galinda's college friends
Bronwyn James as ShenShen, another of Galinda's college friends
Aaron Teoh as Avaric, Fiyero's friend
Shaun Prendergast as Shiz President
Keala Settle as Miss Coddle
Stephen Stanton as the voice of Fiyero's horse
Additionally, the Cowardly Lion makes an appearance as a Lion cub. Dorothy Gale, a Kansas farm girl who is accidentally transported to the Land of Oz by a tornado with her dog Toto, is featured alongside the Scarecrow, Tin Man and an adult version of the Cowardly Lion in a brief cameo early in the film. Ama Clutch, a character from the Wicked novels but not present in the musical, also appears. Multiple cameos take place during the “One Short Day” sequence. The original Elphaba and Glinda actresses, Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, respectively, appear as Wiz-O-Mania Super Stars. Composer Stephen Schwartz cameos as the Emerald City guard who announces to Elphaba and Glinda that "the wizard will see them now". Various notable West End actors also make cameo appearances in the film, including Kerry Ellis, Luke Bayer, Georgina Onuorah, and Dianne Pilkington.

4:24 homie loves this movie so much he’s tripping over his words no worries there I’m right there with you this movie is one of 2 that have made me cry specifically when the fat black guy says leave my boys alone there good boys
clint eastwood's the mule made 100 million dollars very quietly at the box office without much help from the studio. prior to cry macho's release clint made some political statements which were not to the liking of h-wood. cry macho was a great film. it could have been a hit if the studio had gotten behind it. in fact with the proper promotion i believe it could have been nominated for several oscars. the studio punished clint for his statements by not properly backing the film. the film was set up to fail by the very studio responsible for it. this was during the time hollywood was more concerned with being PC than with making $. david zaslav then takes over the studio over looks all of these facts and begins a VERY personal campaign against eastwood. then to prove himself 'correct' he pretty much buries this film ... out of spite. never mind all the OTHER warner crap that had failed just prior to his arrival or all of HIS own crap that failed once he took the helm. warner brothers betrayed their dc superheroes when they TRIED and failed badly to make ALL of or nearly all of their superhero films dark; more like marvel. batman is perfect for a darker tone; superman is not. also, choosing such almost unknown characters as shazam/the original captain marvel, blue beetle, etc. was a very bad move. making films with the INTENT to create a shared universe was merely shooting themselves in the foot as they were not focusing on each character/each film, but rather looking too far down the line. aquaman was a fluke. they lucked up with aquaman. it was released during the height of super hero film mania during the holidays when marvel had no product scheduled. aquaman IS a joke of a character. they barely got passed all of that by changing the character to be more like namor the submariner or neptune/poseidon. they should have considered themselves lucky with that one, but no they pressed their luck and made a sequel. aquaman 2 and the flash are two of the biggest debacles in FILM HISTORY. dc/warners can't even cast a superhero film without it creating a ton of bad press.
Thanks for your efforts. To be more professional, use the right words. I'm Catholic so I know that the house where nuns live is a "convent" not a covenant or a witch's coven.
Total piece of anti-catholic, Woke, DEI SHIT. Cinematography and Art Direction complete shit. Every frame of the film--EVERY FUCKING FRAME--is a Black, White, Red color palette with a ubiquitous blue filter. The two (presumably) straight, White men are evil and plotting. The gay White man (Tucci) is more moral. But THE MOST MORAL AND HOLY is the Hermaphrodite. GIMME A FUCKING BREAK! Im so fucking sick of Pedowood, Baphomet propaganda.
Awful film
Great review ❤
Another solid movie from legendary Clint Eastwood. And I hope this isn't his last one. Nowadays, when all kind of trash are pushed forward, Clint delivers a real movie with such easiness. Genius, enough said.
Beautiful movie and his performance is just phenomenal!
"Conclave" was a wonderful film, the surprising feel-good movie of the year! I must say, though, if it represents the Sacred College of Cardinals accurately, they are in need of some guidance regarding not backstabbing their colleagues and making voting decisions based on what they know of the candidates and not hearsay. Maybe they could learn something from the Baha'is.
Nov 6 2024 - Just came from seeing it at Lincoln Square in NYC. Absolutely loved it. Walking out the theater I was asking myself - "what's my character? would I always do the moral thing even if its inconvenient?"
Very strange. This movie is on wide release in UK and Ireland.
A Clint Eastwood film deserves to be seen in theatres. I luckily found a Theatre that had it, got on the Metro to see it. Worth every penny! Best film of the year.
its always nice when the algorithm suggest a video from a small channel
I live in Glasgow and I'm gonna see this tomorrow, hyped isn't the word.
The papalcy? Who is this clown
When I heard it was only getting released in ~50 theaters I assumed I would have to wait for streaming, but I did find one theater that was playing it and I saw it tonight. I concur with your thoughts: It is a solidly good mid-budget drama of the sort that we really don't see that much of anymore. Once upon a time, in a far away epoch known as the 1990s, films like this were commonplace and they played theatrically. But these days they are a rare breed. (Though ironically, Keifer Sutherland, who appears here, did star in one of those rare films, though it went straight to streaming: The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial.) WB should be ashamed of themselves only giving the film a limited release. They owe it to Clint to really support what might be his last film. He's made a ton of money for them over the years and he's loyal to the studio. If this is in fact his last film, it's a much, much, much better film to go out on than Cry Macho. I'm so happy that wasn't his swan song.
Reminds me of the 90s drama "A Time To Kill" (also with Sutherland). Looking forward seeing this!
I saw this movie on Saturday then took my husband back on Monday to see it again. Liked it every bit as much on the second watch. I agree with you on every point. Great review by you. Breathless at times. Regarding the music, Hitchcock said the Psycho music added 34% of the dramatic impact. This music was its own character. I appreciated the score as it went from background to foreground. Then to background. I appreciated the ambiguous ending. What Catholic or Christian or human being could argue with the last comment by the new pope, “This is how God made me.” I hope it sweeps the Oscars and encourages quality movies to be made. Julie Schap
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thanks so much for watching!
Fiennes deserves the Oscar Tucci best supporting Acting and production was excellent all the way around Downside is the “twist” which took away from an otherwise excellent film.
I'm glad you enjoyed it overall!
Thanks for the review. I'm a Catholic in my 40's and I saw it with my Catholic mother who is in her 70's and it we really enjoyed the movie. We immigrated to Canada from El Salvador. I'm a physician. So in real life we've interacted with catholic that are represented by each of the different candidates for pope, and the nuns, in the movie. This I think made us appreciated the political machinations even more. The ending though I felt a little rushed. I can already seen Ryan George making pitch meeting video where he says: and in the end it's revealed that the new pope .... Wow it's going to be really hard for him to be pope after that reveal... No, super easy, barely an inconvenience. See he says that the last pope was fine with this, so it's all good. Since it's what was going to be the most controversial aspect from the book, I feel it needed more time to explore the issue, if it was going to be included.
I really appreciate your thoughts! I can understand the rushed feeling of the ending but I'm glad you enjoyed the film overall!
“Christopher Abbot” is ALWYAS good in everything I’ve seen him in man.
Always always always
@@JackLautaret I’m glad you agree
Loved this movie, and the ending? The process worked perfectly, as it should.
I'm so glad you liked it!

Thanks so much for your interesting and professional review. I saw the movie and agree with you. I am a practicing Catholic as well. Hope that Ralph Fiennes finally gets his Best Actor Oscar!
I really appreciate those kind words. Thank you so much!
Definitely getting hyped for this one. Hearing great stuff.
I hope you enjoy it!
I literally can’t wait to watch it
It’s a good one! I hope you enjoy!
Thanks for the great review Jack. I saw it Friday morning and agree with every word. This is what I wrote on Threads when I came out of the theater: "That was brilliant. Best film of the year. Fiennes will win the Oscar. I'm calling it here. Truly engrossing. Great acting all the way around. Terrific script. Fantastic set and costume detail. Very thought provoking. See it if you can." The ending has definitely already ruffled some feathers, but it worked for me too.
Thank you for the kind words! I agree with everything you said in your review as well! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
I give your rating a 9/10, agree in most of the stuff
I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy it as well.

wow i think you were right on the money when you said folie a deux feels less like a sequel and more like an epilogue. i can’t help but feel like they should’ve made it into a tv show for hbo max, like the penguin has got, and it would’ve gave them time to flesh out the characters, work on the writing etc and instead of having loads of small scale musical sequences, have one very large and extravagant musical number each episode that pops up randomly that you get excited for each week. i think that would’ve fixed almost every issue i had with folie a deux. as it stands its not the “total garbage” everyone is claiming it to be, but it’s far too overambitious for a film that comes in just over the 2 hour mark. i know many scenes with gaga were cut which i feel like is a big issue (harley as a character was very weak and we know little to nothing about her, her motivations, and what if anything she was being honest about), maybe if there is enough demand for it they’ll add these deleted scenes in for a directors cut blu ray.
*Spoilers I think people really misjudged the entire plot. What I saw in this flick is truly magnificent. Read the breakdown below. The entire film revolves around a central theme: Does Joker truly exist, or is it just Arthur faking it? Throughout the film, it wasn’t Arthur trying to become 'The Joker.' Instead, 'The Joker' was already within him, pushing constantly to emerge. The dream-like sequences we see in Arthur’s mind, banging the Judge and killing people are the struggles of that inner battle. Arthur resists at every turn. It was a Joker's thing in the first iteration that he would kiss unexpectedly as he greets. Here, Arthur's resistance is visible when he tries to kiss his lawyer, which becomes an awkward mess. Even when he attempts to embody 'The Joker' in the courtroom, his fake accent is evident that he's just not fully there yet. His followers sense this too, as he fails to truly connect with them. Even to the audience, the entire act is a failure on Arthur's part. After all the miseries, after feeling lost and helpless, Arthur does something that he shouldn't have done at any cost. DISRESPECTING THE JOKER. He disrespects 'The Joker' when he takes full responsibility for the 7 murders he did, hence taking away the credit from 'The Joker', which has always been dear to him. Those who have read him in the comics know it very well Joker then begins to show up intangibly. You could see Arthur's supporters parting away from him. Harley leaves him. All the support he (indirectly the Joker) had abandons Arthur. When Arthur becomes a NOBODY, 'The Joker tactically finds the one who truly admires 'The Joker's' persona, who admired Joker's kiss at the beginning of the film. The Joker chooses him as his new host by killing Arthur, who will soon be forgotten while Joker's legacy will continue. Killing Arthur was Joker's 8th Murder. Folie à Deux isn’t just a shared state between Arthur and Lee-it's shared with the entire community. 'The Joker' is the parasite no one can disrespect, even the host he occupies." Whether you like this film depends on whether you saw 'The Joker' doing what he does best.
@@prateekbhanushali1956 very insightful analysis. I appreciate those thoughts. It’s a great way at interpreting it. I agree with a lot of it. Thanks for your thoughts!
wow this is a fabulous analysis of the film. and it fits with the opening animated sequence (one of my fave parts of the whole film! i thought it was so interesting!). think you’ve hit the nail on the head.
I adored it. I watc everything on 1.5 speed,I think this helps alot. It was incredible, the acting, the aesthetic, the sets, the script, the songs all of it was phenomenal. I'm DYING TO SEE LEE TURN INTO HARLEY! I WANT A PART 3 Still have not seen the first one
Watch the first one and you’ll quickly understand why people are entirely disappointed
i smoke crack. piles n piles of crack.
Thank you for your review) I was looking forward to see this movie. I loved the original Joker. But as reviews pile up, there are few that are even a little bit positive. Very sad that critiques like you have a better ideas than people who actually write scripts. They could've made such a great story, exploring the inner battle of Arthur. More like Jakyl and Mr. Hide. Harley could have been a force of nature, bringing Arthur to his demise like a femme fatale. But we have what we have🤗
Very good review!!

D-16's speech before becoming Megatron gave me chills. Gave me Kratos vibes, especially with his voice.
Thought exactly the same thing with the GOW voice. It was epic 🔥
I haven't seen the Rise of the Beasts movie, but I felt the same way about the Bumblebee movie (although it does have humans in it). The Michael Bay Transformers movies just never really did anything for me. The franchise itself... well, I mean, it has transforming robots... what more do you need?
Dude i just saw it yesterday in the theatres in 3D! It was FIRE!

The best transformers film I've ever seen dude.

This movie felt a little more relatable than I wished it would. Seriously, having major mental/social health problems is majorly difficult to live with. I wish I had the feelings of connectedness that so many do. I hung out with homeless people and felons who took advantage of my desire to connect after having experienced a major marital issue and a huge move and psychosis. I just have had a desire for the world to connect and be safe and compassionate and loving-all while my personal world has been heavily rocked too many times. I lost too many friends, failed to connect with enough good people majorly because of my weird behavior when I was in psychosis.
The heartbreaking part in all of this is that you desperately desire and have tried to get this and haven't. Yet then you see other people who aren't searching for it, have it fall into their lap. I don't know about you but sometimes I feel that there is a script. Fate has decided things will never get in our life no matter how much you try, nothing matters.
