"Kiltpacking" at Robber's Cave | Backpacking | Keppel's Vlog 27 | Wilburton, Okla.
(Recorded March 1-2, 2024)
Join me as I return to Robber's Cave State Park, this time with a twist-I'm "kiltpacking"! Wearing a kilt and carrying a minimal amount of gear, this adventure is an experiment in technical ultralight backpacking (sub-10 pound base weight). The kilt adds 5 pounds, but as "worn" weight, it doesn't count towards the carry weight.
Just before heading out, I received sad news about the passing of a long-time church member. It reminded me of how Jesus would retreat to the wilderness during tough times, and I’m following that example today, hoping to find some peace and clarity as I hike.
Along the way, I encounter fellow adventurers and explore campfire areas, appreciating the serene beauty of the park. Despite the chilly night in the hammock, the experience is enriching, and I feel a renewed sense of ease.
Join me on this journey of discovery and reflection, and let's take in the beauty of nature together.

It's my last two days on the Ohio-to-Erie Trail! There's nothing like the feeling of getting close to the end of a long journey - even when the cameras stop working, and the rain feel like it'll never stop. Fortunately, with warm places to stop, loving family, and new friends along the way, it's a great reminder that a cycle tour is an adventure like nothing else. Day 5 - Mile Marker 195 - 283 ...

      I generally don't plan stops myself. I usually have a time limit so I generally have mileage I have to do daily, but I rarely plan stops. And since camp spots aren't generally in range i do a lot of stealth camping

      Yeah, it's the lack of camping that makes this challenging, unless you go with true stealth camping. Thanks for your comment! It's a good way to handle it - look for a spot when you're tired!

      I had a few reasons - first of all, I miss fall colors, and this was a great time to go see the changed leaves. Second, I have family in Ohio, so being able to stay with them a couple places along the way was a nice advantage of the trail. Third, I wanted a trail that was longer than I'd done before, but still with a clear beginning and end. And fourth, the mix of mostly paved, with a bit of road riding and towpath trail appealed to me after struggling with the mud on the Katy trail. I just got back from the trip last night, and it was exactly as I'd hoped. :-)

      Hey, glad you're enjoying the series! The Lee's Summit Amtrak station has a scheduled stop - there's no need to flag it down, fortunately! :-D But they certainly don't stop for long! I'd recommend getting tickets online, since there wasn't anyone present to sell in-person tickets at the tiny booth, either. I just showed the QR ticket to the conductor between Lee's Summit and the first stop. As for the Kirkwood-to-trailhead, that took longer than I'd expected. It's about 20 miles, mostly on protected bikeways, but with some road riding. I just plugged it into Komoot, and followed the directions there, but if you're looking for options, the Bike Katy Trail site has great directions. I think Komoot routed me along option 2: bikekatytrail.com/kirkwood.aspx

    Did you send off for the Katy Trail map, or get it on trail? I’m really enjoying the videos. The Katy Trail is on my bucket list

      @Raveler1 ปีที่แล้ว

      I got it from the Adventure Cycling Association (adventurecycling.org). They have both physical copies and digital, though I've found that I like having the physical backup. That said - their route actually diverges from the Katy Trail, since they've used it for a part of a longer cycle tour route. Still, it's very handy for most of the trail! Glad you're enjoying the videos! It was a great experience, especially for someone just getting into cycle touring. :-)

    I would love to ride Route 66. Im going to try to ride at least the Oklahoma portion, even if it’s only over weekends.

      @Raveler1 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been planning that exact trip! I'm thinking of riding from Joplin to Texola along BR-66. The elevation change looks intimidating, though - but could be fun! Y'know, it just occurred to me that I could go the other direction, and have the elevation change be mostly downhill... hah!

    I’ve been thinking about riding to keystone like that, just for an overnighter. Was that Wikewa road that had the bike lane? If so, I didn’t know there was one on that road.

    • @Raveler1
      @Raveler1 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, the ride to Keystone is just about perfect for an overnighter, other than that huge hill. And you identified Wikewa road exactly! I was also surprised by the bike lane, even if it was intermittent. It's a much nicer way to get out there, I think, than trying to follow 51 (or even the back roads paralleling 51). Glad to meet another Tulsa area person!

    Nice video. I was looking at these bikes. Decided on another. I use the same trunk bag. The tourguide looks pretty good.

      @Raveler1 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Dusty! I'm surprised at how much I like the Topeak bags - they've been great at hauling. My only trouble has been on the trunkbag - it's recently begun to have the zipper pulls break. The Tourguide is perfect for carrying everything from a paperback book to a camera to the spare parts I might need on the ride.

    • @Raveler1
      @Raveler1 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love the GSI cookset - it's exactly the right size for one person, and it's so, so small! When I first started bikepacking, I had an old scouting alcohol stove - with a pan, a huge pot, and lots of rattling metal catches. It was heavy and loud - I'm so glad the GSI is smaller, lighter, and quieter! The Jetboil sets look interesting, though. Maybe when this one wears out, I'll check them out. Thanks for the suggestion!

    Sorry for your loss....did you check any of the local pawn shops to see if they had taken in any bikes? You know when you showed what all you take on your trips, I was thinking, where's the bike lock? I had a Schwinn taken years ago, it was gone in a flash and I never forgot it. Hope you're able to get another Roam 4. Great vids btw.

    • @Raveler1
      @Raveler1 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did check with all the local pawn shops and bike shops - even left my contact info and photos of the bike, just in case it showed up. I didn't take a bike lock with me on the Katy Trail, figuring that I could always sit with it in sight - and I regret that, since it wasn't always true, especially early on. I do carry a cable lock now for the new bike, but after a bit of time in Austin, I'm thinking of upgrading to a U-lock. They were everywhere, and kept the bikes secure, even when cable locks were cut and left on the ground. I'm sorry for the loss of your Schwinn - there's nothing like the feeling you have when you realize your bike is gone.

      Thank you for your comment! Yes, I am still sad that the bike I rode in these videos was stolen. I really liked it! The Talon and the Roam are very similar bikes - it looks like the Talon is slightly longer, so would likely have a more stable ride (as opposed to nimble). The Talon also has a slightly longer travel on the front suspension - 100mm vs. 63mm on the Roam. Truthfully, I think the Roam is already stable enough - it sometimes had trouble making extremely tight turns. But if you like to ride on very rough terrain, a hardtail like the talon might be better for you! Either way, if you can test ride them, you should! I chose the Roam after testing it, unlike my new bike. The new one turned out ok, but I might have bought a different size if I'd had a chance to test it first. Exploring new places is lots of fun - I hope you continue riding and find the right bike for you!
