The insects that want you, the bat wants them. They do not get in your hair

We’re puzzled by the bat encounters. We had one circle the boat in broad daylight a few years ago and assumed it was anomalous. This year, it happened two or three different times with one encounter rather distant from shore and, again, each in full daylight. As far as we know, however, none lit or attempted to stow away. It’s armchair sailing season again so looking forward to your next video!

Great video! I have a 1988 Bayfield 29 and love it. I love the 36 and 40 also and haven't had the pleasure of going on them. Just in case you didn't know, Ted Gozzard who started Bayfield sailboats sold or gave Bayfield sailboats to his brother and then started building Gozzard yachts in Goderich just north of Bayfield and they are still being built today. They are beautiful also. Have a great day.

It was still nice to sorta be on the water. Lens cap issues have plagued me too.

All I saw was two people on the engine. They ,later, said they were sailing but it would have been nice to see the sails

Looks like a pleasant group. I’d suggest a group effort on some sea shanties.

Why don’t you have your wife/girlfriend do some of the steering? If you want her to be excited about sailing, give her the opportunity to gain experience.

I watch you guys with a mixture of envy and nostalgia. After 40 plus years of sailing on Lake Huron, i am past the age of managing a C&C 34. Of the roughly 50k NM I logged, the best were the annual trips to the North Channel. Enjoy your ventures. Fair winds and safe harbours. The NC is the most beautiful place in the world.

Great video! Visited the Benjamin’s last year. Hoping to sail into that area with my Catalina-28 this summer to check off another “Bucket List” item. Fraser Hill looks like a “must do”. Did you ever get lost, or was the trail generally discernible? Was any of the trail along dangerous cliffs? How long did it take you to reach the top?

MKIII Tall rig? That brings back some memories. I worked for a number of years at the Catalina dealer just east of Toronto, Ontario. I learned to sail on a Catalina 30 and I'm just looking at getting back into it. I've been out of sailing for too many years. Have a great summer of sailing!

Doing this same journey this spring. Purchased a boat that lives at Jefferson Beach Marina and I'm sailing up to Goderich.

I brought my boat around from Manistee Michigan. We stopped in Port Sanilac on the way to Cleveland. I was in the V berth. and I heard my crewmember say hey A sign here says they have great water here I said all right fill up the water tank next thing I heard him say was oh that filled up quick I said did you fill up the water tank he said oops I messed up. I filled up the holding tank it was 8:15 PM at this time. We were planning on leaving at 2 - 3 AM to be at the mouth of the St Clair to be on Lake Erie around 5ish was the plan. I said well now we are fu barred we can’t leave with a full holding tank ok not those exact words maybe a few 🤬thrown in 😂😂😂Anyway I found 4 phone numbers left a message like this on all voice mails. Hello I don’t know if you can help me or not but I’m at your gas dock on my sailboat and my crew member has just filled my holding tank with your wonderful water that was meant for my water tank. Is there anyway that I can get somebody down here at this time to give me a pump out. I was planning on leaving at 2-3 AM to hit the mouth of the Saint Clair river at dawn Thank you in advance. About a half hour goes by and my phone rings and I say hello and the voice on the phone says is this captain with the dumb ass crew member that filled the holding tank instead of the water tank I said yes sir it is he says well I have sarah on the way down and I turned my head to the left this girl is walking right towards me. I said I think she is here thank you very much I said, are you sarah she said yes I am I said thank you so much for doing this she was just smiling from ear to ear so she proceeded to pump out the holding tank proceeded to let my buddy Dwight know that we were never going to let him live this down. Dwight handed her $25 said thank you very much for the rescue. I said thank you very much again asked her if she happened to have a space heater she did and let us borrow it which was awesome we had been freezing for 2 days. Was only 45 degrees during the day and very cold at night anyway We ordered a pizza ate showered went to sleep was out of there at about 3:30 in the morning and we did he hit Lake Erie at the approximate time we were there at 4:45 middle bass by 915. I got a good nights rest didn’t even hear the storm that hit us. I was so tired. Left middle bass around 8:30 in the morning and was at Lorain Harbor approximately 1 PM Great trip took 3.5 days Left Manistee Mi at 8:30 am Friday in Lorain at 1pm Monday

I’ve done that many times. You were very fortunate to get that track as long as you did. An option if it gets too brutal is to tuck into stokes bay.

How much pressure is on the helm? When you have just the main up when I had just my Genoa up. Last year there was a lot of pressure on the helm because it was constantly trying to pull away, you know?

Nice video. Did that trip before. Home based on georgian bay. My usual rtack was sarnia to bayfield or straigtt to port elgin or better southhampton. Niver angle to tobermory and a ahorter leg , avoiding night passage through the area of came hurd. Amd aouthhampton has chantey island to hide behind if lake huron doesnt play nice

The beautiful smell of an ocean with no salt. Your boat must have felt like a rocketship.

I immensely enjoyed your video. The place and the course are so familiar. I made the trip up the lake to Tobermory and the North Channel many times. It was always worth it and never became uninteresting. I am glad you share your experience. I sailed out of the Canadian side, from just across the lake from Sanilac.

Really like what you did for the Bimini. Is that bead and cove cedar strips cold molded into that shape?

That’s one scary day trip; night sailing in unfamiliar waters! I sailed my slightly smaller and lighter Catalina 28 to the North Channel (primarily the Benjamin’s) last year but took the easy way; Michigan coast to Presque Isle and a short crossing to Meldrum Bay Canada. From there to Turnbulls, Spanish, and the Benjamin’s. Return trip pretty much the same. I’m planning a return trip this year but will probably do the same unless I get a really good weather window. That’s just too much open water for me. Last year there were so many thunderstorm watches that I sailed early every day to get into a port by early afternoon, once just an hour before a storm passed through! Two years ago, I got caught in THREE consecutive storms crossing Saginaw Bay solo, leaving on a cloudless morning. I feared broaching or pitchpoling in the huge waves! I will never put myself in that situation again!

Thanks for sharing yr trip. Curious if U ever have used a preventer on yr boom. It really sways back n forth when the sails down. Keeps boom solid when main is up or down and especially important when wind is behind U. Looking forward to yr north channel episodes. Havent been before but hopefully in the future. Great to watch you guys on the water and enjoying the other side of the lake. I put close to 50k NM under the keel, mostly Lake Huron and the North Channel. Too old to sail now, but lots of good memories. BTW, never underestimate the North Channel. The roughest water I ever encountered was on a run from John Island to Gore Bay. Waves 12 to 15 feet and breaking. No rudder control in broken wave crests. The boat survived better than the crew! Fair sailing and safe harbours to you.

There is a lot of water in Lake Huron. We motor sailed from Bayfield Ontario to Port Huron Michigan it took us 8 hours.

We’d hoped to get up into that neck of the woods and possibly dip a toe in Lake Superior last year. If experience is what you get when you don’t get what you want, however, we left with a little more experience instead. 😄 Looking forward to seeing the rest of your trip!

Nice video of Great Lakes sailing. Thanks! Next time you get over-powered, try moving the traveler down, it makes a big difference. Maybe on this point of sail, loosening the boom-vang and giving the sail a little more twist at the top could help too. Miss the Great Lakes! Been gone almost 50 years.

Wow! Enjoyed your video, but that crossing didn’t look like fun to me! Four foot waves, let alone six, would have kept me at the slip, especially without an autopilot. I’ll be eager to see where you went from there. North Channel? BTW. I sail one of the rare Catalina 28’s. I live further north, so crossed Lake Huron at Presque Isle; a much longer sail. Went from Meldrum Bay to The Turnbulls, to Long Point Cove, through the Whalebacks, Spanish, and finally The Benjamin’s! Returned same way.

Great videos,Great boat. Catalina 30Mk II ? I had a Catalina 30 which I sold a while after losing my wife to cancer 6 years ago. I’m looking for another Catalina 30 now because I’ve decided I would still like to do more Great Lakes sailing before I’m too old to do it. Thank you for helping to inspire me to try again with that project. Tom

My wife and I rented a tandem bike for the first time on Mackinac Island. Our marriage saver is to never rent a tandem bike again! :-D
