What's the REAL Cost of Living in Australia vs New Zealand?
Is Australia really cheaper and affordable than New Zealand? In this video we'll do a dive into common expenses and costs in the 2 countries and find out which country has a cheaper cost of living. I guarantee the answers might be surprising with a few twists and turns!
*Note: We didn't mention the "Brightline Test" which is a form of capital gains tax if you sell a rental or investment property in NZ within 2 years of purchase, then you will be liable for tax on any profits made. Any time after that there is no tax payable ...

      Thanks for commenting Mauricio. I barely scratched the surface on the cost of living over in Oz but have been watching a few similar cost of living videos over there in the last week and it's certainly a lot more expensive that we hear about on social media or in the MSM. Healthcare I completely forgot about apart from 2% they put in for their ACC type equivalent (versus 1.6% here). Makes me appreciate what we actually have here in NZ all the more! :)

We're still putting in $1k a fortnight into it as I want it to have $100k initial capital. As of today after investing $94k the balance is (drum roll please) .... $103,895.62 - So up almost $10k after 3 years 7 months approx. Naturally we will blow the lot on pies ;)

    • @ProjectFrugal
      @ProjectFrugal 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Sure can - you earn enough money but you just need a plan: 1). Create a budget and list all your assets and liabilities 2). Find out ways you can either cut your spending and also ways you can increase your income 3). Over time, make sure ensure you eliminate all your debt especially credit cards and loans. Stay debt free when you get there (apart from a mortgage) 4). Make sure you have an emergency fund - it doesn't have to be huge, but you need one regardless 5). Investigate investment options - target index funds/ETF's and or high interest savings accounts and invest as much as you can 6). Examine your budget and calculate your net worth monthly so you can track your progress. In a nutshell - that's what we did/are doing. Hope that helps :)

    • @ProjectFrugal
      @ProjectFrugal 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I would create a spreadsheet in Excel and then find out all the possible options within Australia for purchasing them (so you can compare fees etc ...). In terms of what to choose, there's a plethora of options but I'd probably stick to the US500 or ASX200 for simplicity's sake to get a diversified selection without complicating things - If you were in NZ, then InvestNow would likely be the cheapest platform to purchase them (based on my experience) but I can't really speak for Australia :)

    We are in Australia and we live in our son’s investment property. My husband retired two years before I did. The fortnightly pension is $850 per person. We have no debt besides our overheads. Internet, phones and devices, $350. Our insurance, home contents, a car and a transit motorhome and health insurance, is $420 a month. We contribute $1000 to his mortgage. Utilities $300. That leaves us with $1300 for petrol, food, car registration, gap for health services, prescription drugs etc. For an entire year before I retired, we practiced on how to live on this amount. It was not easy because of how we had lived and travelled, but it is very doable compared to many others. It is becoming more and more difficult as the cost of living increases but I have changed the way I cook and freeze portions.

    Very nice job. You have done what I always intended, which was to turn my Excel spreadsheets that I developed to do the same thing into a "proper" app. I did have an option to adjust for inflation as another input variable. The only other thing you might consider is the ability to add (or subtract) lump sums at certain points in the plan. I used this to handle potential inheritances, downsizing the house, or anything else that could affect the investment balance up or down in a particular year.

    • @ProjectFrugal
      @ProjectFrugal 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you so much for the "coffees" Geoff - I really appreciate it and not expected but thank you. Obviously it's not about the money for me, more to hopefully help others on their journeys and hopefully show what is possible. In the next release (I'm burnt out after that effort at the moment), I'll look at adding in an "inflation" type field. There is a workaround for the other major events (which is not exactly pretty), but it's to create another plan from another point in time to add in those major financial changes starting from a certain point in time. Not exactly ideal, but it is an option at this stage. I'll need some time to see how I might be able to add it in with your suggestions - no guarantees! Any future releases/versions will be utilizing the same link to the public Google Drive location and will likely be version 1.01, 1.02 etc ... I really appreciate the feedback - thank you once again :)

      @@MarkSeth-w7l - Yes, the NZX has been flat since we started this portfolio. The good news is my personal portfolio is almost at the same amount as my wife's so we're going to have 2 portfolio's up to 100k (middle of next year) and then maybe have a break for a month or two and finally spend some money - Getting rich slow is just that but it will pay off ;)

      Individual stock picking and only investing in NZ sharemarket which is so small - could be why you are not getting 10% returns. Why not invest in global index funds? Have you checked out The Happy Saver (Ruth who lives in the South Island). Also check out Rebel Finance School (UK based but with lots of NZ content).

    Hopefully you haven't been affected too badly by the recent downturn. Not much the little people can do unfortunately!

      After the drop from early August it's recovered already. With the OCR getting cut things are even better! The last 2 days have been magnificent!

    Because of the stage I am at in my life I would invest it, if I was younger and paying off my house I would put it onto that, either way I wouldn’t waste it as we work hard for our money 👍

    • @ProjectFrugal
      @ProjectFrugal 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yep - if I got it through investment income then I would spend it, and if I didn't need it I would reinvest it :)

  • @ProjectFrugal
    @ProjectFrugal 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Yep - I'm going to invest it - I'll spend it one day when I don't have to work to pay for it!
