G’day I’m Josh - Husband, dad and part time surfer. For a bit of fun, I make short video edits of my weekly surf sessions with my friends, and do the odd review of surf products.

JS SubXero CarboTune Review. Are carbon fiber surfboards actually any good?
I've been asked by a few people for my thoughts on the new JS Sub Xero Carbotune, so I decided to make a surfboard review video about it. I have no affiliation with JS and I have not been paid or compensated for this video. I'm just an average joe who's sharing their thoughts on the board.

@@GuiBorgesMedinaLopes yeah mate
Have you tried any other fins yet? Do you think the Am pc tri fins would go alright around the nb Syd? I have the sub Xero carbotune 5”7 Thanks! 🤙
@@jhilliard280 hey mate, yeah I ride it as a thruster at the wave pool using Filipe Toledo FCS fins and it goes really nice. Bit more response under your back foot. Personally for me the 2+1 set up works best in salt water but why don’t you give it a crack and see what you think? It’s a great board and still my go to
Legend, thanks for the recommendations. I’ll give them a shot for sure! I settled with the PCC Reactors. I’ll give them a go and report back 🤙
@jhilliard280 how did they go?
The last half hour of intermediate is pretty much the first half hour of advanced
@@jaycee571 yeah agreed!
I found this style of board a dog to paddle. Yes they catch waves but they are like paddling a badge. On top of that they are slow which can be a frustration.
yo bro, I know this was ages ago but do u know around what time you were in Bali, what month?
@@sethmcgowan49 I was there in April! The good time is from November to April. After that it’s onshore trade winds
What a good review. I reckon it's a must for anyone contemplating heading for a session.

Great review! How has the board held up? Curious about its longevity since I value durability over other aspects. Definitely going to get a sub xero but I’m 80kg-82kg and torn between 5’8 and 5’9. I’m planning to use it as a daily driver for pretty much anything from knee high to overhead. Do you think I should get 5’8 or 5’9 will give me more range? Because of the added density of carbotune you mentioned, would you think getting 5’9 in carbotune can be comparable to 5’8 Hyfi in 1-2ft waves? Thanks!
Hey mate, I'm still riding it all the time and it doesn't have a mark on it other than the compression i talk about in the video. It even kissed the wall at the pool one time. Personally i'd go the 5'8, I was about that weight when I bought mine. They also have th HyFi 3 which is half carbon (bottom) and half epoxy. Its a bit cheaper and I've heard good things, though I've not tried one. Good luck mate!
@@joshtraceysurfing thanks for you reply! Dang that’s really strong! I’m completely sold. Thanks for your opinion too. 5’8 might be a safer option. Curious about the new hyfi 3.0 but I hate seeing boards yellowing and getting dents so I’ll definitely get a carbon! Cheers!
@@hironodoubt4780 hahah I can related to that. Good luck, and let me know what you think if you end up buying it
Looks excellent. Two plus one MR's look a good match. Keep wax on a black board in summer I imagine would be a nightmare.
Having the double deck grip makes it easy (I can't imagine going back to wax now to be honest). The board does get SUPER hot quickly in the sun. Like surprisingly hot. The MRs look great in it! haha They go amazing in it too. Just not in the wave pool. Thanks for watching mate.

Does the waves just keep on coming without a break for the whole session ? Haven’t been in the water for a few months questioning my paddle endurance , did you find you had time to Recover your shoulders between waves
Hey mate it does stop, in sydney they do sets of 6 with about 3 mins in between sets. That being said, paddle fitness is important here as there is a lot of water moving in the pool. Maybe take on one of the more chill sessions for your first one back :)
Carbon boards are absolutely qorth it. It feels almost exactly like pu
@@samw2768 yeah mate I agree! This is still the only board I’m riding
Hi, How you compare the Sub Xero and Phoenix?
man totally different boards. I personally like surfing the sub more than the Phoenix (not that it isn't a great board). It's faster and way more lively.
@@joshtraceysurfingi only have money to buy one 😩
First time in a pool tomorrow! Can’t wait but surfing in qld most days I’m not looking forward to the water temp in Melbourne 😅
Good luck, hope you have plenty of wetsuit haha. Just remember, you have to paddle really hard from the take off, closer to the wall you sit, the steeper the drop. Rip in!
Nice video
Hell, they both are shreddable!
@@billythephoenix so fun bud
Easy fix.
It's sick, but where is the scale up model? We've got good energy on the way - lots of means. Pump it up - 6 footers (ahead of the energy surplus)
The have a beast mode but it’s not bigger, I think it’s just more square.
@@joshtraceysurfing - gotcha - sounds like sebastian area in FL. It never gets bigger than a certain size. Just more backing to it. More water to drill you down. I guess the bottom contour would need a more gradual change than all at once - like 15 foot ramp up instead of 5 foot ramp up (though I have no idea of current contour). We need to get next size though. Someone needs to design it because cheap energy will be here at some point. Think of those pirate ships or whatever at fairs that swing back and forth. Now imagine it dips down and hits the water during a swing. BIG WAVES...
That fresh water get ya
straight to the bottom
Hey mate, the fact that you can't put a foot wrong on it is because it's JS. They make amazing board. I have a xero gravity, and so far, it's the best board I've ridden. It's super forgiving and very responsive. I surfed 8+ft with it yesterday, and even though it's not the board, you should ride in waves like that it held really well and got the job done. Thanks, JS. Good review, mate. I actually thought about getting a xero gravity carbon. I wish they would make the raging bull in carbon, too
@@christophecazaux6018 you’re not the first person to tell me the xero gravity is the best board they’ve ridden. Maybe I should get one 🤔 Nice work on the bomb yesterday 😮 pretty big around here this weekend too! Cheers for the message 👍🏻
Compressions in boards are actually a good thing. You can get your feet groove in the board. Relating compressions to strength is a false narrative. High performance boards that have good flex are most likely to get compressions and feel way better under your feet. Also, you didn’t mention flex at all, you only spoke about “density” and kind of touched on specs. Flex is everything in a Surfboards’s and carbon boards usually don’t have flex although JS said he has worked on this. I would rather a board getting more compressions with good flex than have a stiff board that is “strong”. Just my opinion. Thanks for the review.
@@watman_ thanks for your message mate. There is plenty of flex in the carbon, but not like the Hyfi. That being said the carbon does go better. My mate has the xero in carbon and his deck is compressed, to be fair though I do have a front traction pad so perhaps there is some compressions in mine that I just can’t see. They’ve just dropped hyfi 3 and that is carbon on the bottom and hyfi on top. I saw some reviews saying they have amazing flex and pop but I’ve not had the chance to ride one. I’ve been riding mine in the wave pool in Sydney and goes killer!
Why the music of a pedo ?
Hey mate, for reference how tall are you? And weight?
@@danielxerri9881 5’9 and at the time I was about 85kg or something. I now sit around 80 and have dropped to the 5’8 but to be fair I should have gone 5’7. Check out the Hyfi 3 that just came out.
And down he goes!
Meant it! 😂😂😂
Now that's a knife! Stevie hooked you guys up!!
Ho Stevie is the man! (I love that knife)🔪
Which construction is lighter in board weight...hyfi or the new carbo tune?
They feel about the same to be honest, but they perform very differently in the water. 👍🏻
Looks legit mate 👌
Thanks mate!
Hi mate, great vid. this looks so fun! Im staying with my family further north at grand mirage and trying to work out surf spots i can sneak off to, i dont suppose you know of any beach breaks up that way? I guess i can always scooter down to the headland. Any info would be much appreciated, thx for the clips!
Hey mate what time of year are you going? If it’s not say between November and April it will be blowing onshore pretty much everyday. There seems to be a bunch of breaks all the way along the beach, some you need a boat and some you don’t. I think there is a couple north of this spot that can be paddled but I didn’t surf them. Just be mindful the current is really really strong, even on small days. That being said, the left in this video was super fun, recommend if you can get there. Can’t surf it at low tide. Good luck! 👍🏻
Awesome, thanks so much for the reply mate, im there in 2 weeks. I think I’ll head down that way and check this spot out. Cheers for the info mate! Much appreciated.
@@GazPotter-u4t it was super fun and no crowds! Good luck mate.
Hey Josh, thanks for the review. I'm looking for a board to progress my surfing. I've been told that I'm a low-intermediate. Do you think this board would work for someone still working on takeoffs and turning?
Hey fella, I think most boards will still be good for that. Was is it about this board this you like? My personal opinion, is that this is quite an expensive board at around $1600 so it’s expensive to learn on. In know JS have just released their Hifi 3 which is half carbon half epoxy. You’ll get similar pop and snap from the carbon but at a cheaper price. I’m really keen to see how these go and would possibly check out one of them so save some cash. All that being said, I’m still exclusively riding this board and absolutely love it still. At urbn surf it’s been so much fun.
@@joshtraceysurfing Hey mate, thanks for the reply. The main reason I was interested in this was 1) you did a great job selling it, 2) I love your feedback about different areas to put my feet because this is a part i'm struggling with 3) you mentioned it's pretty bullet proof so I'm hoping to invest in something good now that I can surf for the next 5 years or so. Thanks for the tip on the Hyfi 3.0. Will also check this out. Thanks heaps for taking the time to respond. I appreciate it.

@@skater_scott thanks mate.
Going to urbnsurf in Sydney in a couple of weeks, great video and well explained! Never been to wave pool before so cheers for the info mate 🤙
No worries, I was there last night! A couple more tips... don't ride a twin or 2+1 use a thruster as you need more drive in your bottom turns as it can be a little boggy. If you have a pockety type board with a bit of volume, ride it. Good luck, it's super fun and I think personally that it is better than Melbourne!
Hey mate, how have you found the sizing and litres? Im presuming you had the hifi in a 5'8 too? Would you say its good at the same size with paddling etc seeing as you mentioned its sits in the water more? Whats your height and weight? Ive had a 5'8 hifi2.0, curious about sizing a carbotune. Felt lime i could have done with abit more volume at times. Im 5'7 80kg! Cheers
Hey mate thanks for reaching out. Yeah I had the 5'8 in Hyfi too and found the same size good! What I mean by sits in the water more, is it doesn't sit on top of the water like the Hify when you're on the wave, it's difficult to explain, but I think if you ride one you'll get what I mean straight away. I'm 5'9 and about 77kg. but when I bought that board I was about 82kg so when I get another one I'll likely drop down a size again. It's still the only board I'm riding... but I'm quietly toying with the idea of getting the Xero too.
Thanks alot, do you find it paddles just as good? Do you feel like it adds or feels like less litres when paddling?
I like it, just not sure about looking even more like a seal while surfing in W.A with it being black.
Must admit on the overcast grey mornings, that thought goes through my mind. It’s a killer board tho, it’s still the only one I’m riding. Nothing else gets a look in.
