Brownie Lives! 1989 Mercury Grand Marquis on the road...sort of...
After years of chipping away on this thing it's finally moving under it's own power. Gettin' closer to that all important inspection sticker.
UPDATE: What appeared to be a stuck throttle turned out to be a stuck IAC valve, which allowed air to bypass the throttle blade, basically creating a massive vacuum leak. Like it doesn't have enough of those already. Cleaned the IAC valve, again, and the engine is running much better now.

    Can you please provide a link to the tuners you used

    • @oldsledpurgatory3595
      @oldsledpurgatory3595 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Well, that's gonna be a little tough because I had to modify the headstock and use a combination of new and old parts for the tuners. The D, G, B, and high E strings are using new staggered-height Sperzel Locking tuners (available from several sources online, $80-$120 usually), while the low E and A strings are using some very old Sperzel locking tuners I had in my stash of parts that are a bit taller than the new ones (better string angle through the nut). The headstock on these guitars is aroud 5/8 of an inch thick, a little thicker than a Fender or typical clone, and that could make replacing the tuners kinda challeging, which is too bad because it needs 'em (non-staggered height tuners are probably the way to go). So, I did it the hard way by thinning the headstock 1/16 of an inch to get the tuners to sit at the right height, which likely won't be an easy option for most people. Sorry I don't have a link or a better answer for you, but there are a number of videos on TH-cam showing some other options for replacing the tuners. Hope this helps. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Thanks for watching. Have a great day!

    • @gyrusscalvary
      @gyrusscalvary 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @oldsledpurgatory3595 I appreciate your swift response. I did see the sperzel tuners and they were around 150. Someone mentioned his old Jackson tuners worked. I don't have a parts stash yet. Normally I'd be like you, and forget about the old holes showing and drilling new. I've watched several vids on this matter. The Kramer site has the specs on this thing all wrong from what I see. Very vague on the sizes so I need a tape for mm to measure everything. The tremdoctor pointed me to a good fix. Check out his channel on this guitar if you haven't yet. Floyd rose left handed locking nut paired with a floyd trem with prs screws knife edge for trem

    • @gyrusscalvary
      @gyrusscalvary 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Sorry it was the tremdoctor who said, he didn't care about the old holes showing and drilling new and I will just do the same most likely. 2bikemike has a vid on the same thing. I should watch that again as he didn't want to change the original makeup of the headstock and used 2 tuners to make 1 and it worked

    • @gyrusscalvary
      @gyrusscalvary 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@oldsledpurgatory3595 ok so realistically, is changing out the whole neck for an aftermarket 22 fret banana neck with 10mm holes and work in worthy tuners even a viable option? Or is the 21 fret neck on this the best thing about it? Besides mahogany body.

    • @oldsledpurgatory3595
      @oldsledpurgatory3595 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@gyrusscalvary I definitely don't mind a few holes showing. Just about every guitar I own has at least one, most have several. Yeah, this can be a challenge with these guitars Fortunately I was able to make something work. Swapping the neck is an option, but I wouldn't recommend spending a lot of money for one. A banana headstock neck would be cool but the stock trem might be tough to keep in tune, if that's something you're concerned about. I really like the neck on this guitar. The frets are kinda small, but I like the overall shape and width of it. I will definitely consider refretting it in the future. The thin mahogany body is nice because it's light and balances well, and is comfortable to wear and play for long periods of time.

    i got a green one a few days ago and so far i'm loving it. maybe with these budget guitars it's partly that some copies are better than others? there is a big break angle on the low E string. i like buying from a local store where i can purchase one i've had a chance to play. i don't think sweetwater does their inspection on inexpensive guitars?

    • @oldsledpurgatory3595
      @oldsledpurgatory3595 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I think Sweetwater pretty much leaves the inspection up to the person who puts the guitar in the box at the factory, and some of them are definitely better than others. Mine had the same problem with the low E string, and I had to make some modifications to the headstock to fix it. I have a video up on my channel explaining what i did to correct that issue as well as some other mods that I made to it. And yes, purchasing a guitar in person is almost always preferable, although I've had pretty good luck buying a few online (knock on wood). Thanks for watching and commenting. Have a great day!

      Well, in the video I'm changing the sound by moving the pickup switch and adjusting the volume control (didn't use the tone controls), as well as turning an overdrive pedal on. Probably the best way to change the sound of any electric guitar is to change the pickups. That will likely have the biggest effect. The pickups that came in this guitar from the factory actually sound pretty good, but I installed some better sounding pickups for my own preference. Sorry, can't hear you over my sore back, legs, arms, head, etc. I'm not sure who was working harder, me or the sled. Gonna need a complete and thorough overhaul after this ride (the sled 's going to need some work too). I'd invite ya over to do some riding but the snow is going to be gone, like, tomorrow. Maybe next year. Talk to you soon bud!

    Nice!! Almost the same mods I did to mine...where did you get the pickguard by the way? Would consider to change mine! Never thought of a tort pickguard but it actually looks very nice! Got a zebra humbucker too...congrats!!

      Thanks! I can't remember for sure but I think it was the cheapest one I could find on ebay. It had some fitment issues (pickguard screw holes not lining up, bridge pickup is a little bit farther away from the bridge), but I was able to make it work. It's supposedly a direct bolt on for a Fender Stratocaster but I didn't test fit it on one. Tried a mint green guard but I didn't care for the way it looked (no fitment issues with that one, though). Seems like we both made similar mods. I'm kind of a traditionalist so I stuck with the stock wiring setup. What color did you get? Got any videos? Would love to see what you did. Thanks for watching and commenting. Have good one!

      @@oldsledpurgatory3595 thanks for the reply, man. Unfortunately, I dont have the proper equipment to do such a video. I can send you photos or give you more details about the mods if you give me your email address, though... not much of a forum guy either, but like reading them...hehe

    I liked it so much as a mod platform, so yeah...I did change the nut (Graphtech), the tuners, the string trees, the knobs (felt too tall, got too much on the way of my right hand), changed the humbucker and installed a Freeway 10 way switch so that I can go both full single coil sounds as well as all the available options with it. So, as strange as it might sound, once modded...it is now my favorite electric. Plays great, sounds great, feels great, the weight is great!! Had to do a little investment, but once it´s done...I love it so much! Wish it came with 22 frets, but...

      Had the same experience with this one; made a few mods and wound up with a guitar I really like. I have a video on my channel explaining what I did (very similar to the mods you described). I have to admit that I prefer 21 frets on a strat, but that's just me (that 22nd fret always throws me off!). Glad it worked out well for you. Thanks for watching and commenting. Have a great day!

      Well, it is now. Made a few modifications to it and now it's a way better guitar. Got a video on my channel about what I did to improve it. Thanks for watching and commenting. Have a great day!
