thanks for the video, gives me more confidence in my new pick up, a thinkpad x1 carbon g8
ooh nice though I will have to tell you that the x1 carbon g8 does not have the keyboard 1.8mm travel but it only has 1.5mm. Other than that I think the x1g8 will be a great machine and I hope you'll like it

the best machine for "i use arch btw" type of use
5:35 first off remove the bottom plastic panel second upgrade the Wi-Fi card and speakers and buy a usb powered mouse and that might fix the problem if it does your welcome
Tip: And also remove the enternal and external battery just in case it shorts the backlight
Oh I have no way to test that as I don't have that Arch install anymore. But it did get fixed by just installing another operating system
Try chameleon web browser
i dont use my thinkpad much cause i have a lot of other desktop at my place and i never go out lol... but i put fedora on mines cause im not regularly using it so i dont update it as much with fedora its a lot better for me just closed the lid open it up like year later and update it lol ...
Retrozilla is the Browser of Browsers it still can Access almost every Website under Windows 98
Arch..... 🤣 I prefer Debian on those machines
@@escapetherace1943 well that machines shown in the video running arch is actually currently running debian
@@dcfbf nice. My main's on arch, my old x220 is debian. I figured debian was better because I can update it whenever, as I use the machine a lot less than my modern pc
@@escapetherace1943I still prefer windows for my newer pcs but ubuntu is basically on every one if my older ones around this age

Cool vid! I used to have an X61 but I guess someone else wanted it more. I ran Arch Linux on it with 4 Gb of RAM and a 128 Gb SSD for better performance. I have been a Tech for more than half a century. Linux for my needs is a far better OS than Winblows will ever be. Keep up the great work my new friend.
I would install anTix Linux or puppy linux on that fine machine. They both have 32-bit .iso options. I hope this intel helps.
I couldn't afford a computer growing up, but I had an uncle with a good job, a computer, and dial-up internet. Nearly every Saturday, when I was around 10, he’d let me use his computer after 2 PM-when the connection rates dropped. Those afternoons were where I learned everything that shaped my career today. My uncle passed away last year, and I still think of him and tear up often. I love you, Tio Folo, and I hope we meet again someday.
Try modern debian with the TDE desktop environment installed, you can get very very close to making it look exactly like windows 98se. TDE was orginally KDE 3.5x which was designed for hardware like mobile pentium 3's, TDE is an updated continuation of that old version of KDE. It's very pretty and you will be very comfortable using it.
@@nadirafurry well I’m not exactly a windows 98 user but I can try it when I have some time

@@dcfbf Weird...
today I bought a used T460 with i5 and 16 GB RAM. A wonderful machine. Since T470 there are absurd problems with USB C Thunderbolt and BAD Soldering. The LAST Thinkpad is T460
The T460 is a great machine, most Thinkpads are. You can have your own reasons for liking the T460 but if the reason why you think that the newer Thinkpads are worse is because of their thunderbolt controller issues, I would have to disagree with you on that one. The T470 can still charge from the flat dc jack and thunderbolt issues are preventable. But what do you mean about the bad soldering?
The T14 Gen 5 now allows 2 RAM again, enough of that story, in addition to having an OLED panel and being much more powerful The T480 only wins today in price (obviously) and in battery life I think too, but it is very difficult to get good batteries and nobody talks about it.
I mean you don't really need the OEM batteries any 3rd party battery can work if you buy it off of a reputable place. Also the keyboard on the T14 gen 5 is not as good as the T480 as it has the 1.5 mm keyboard while the T480 has the 1.8mm. The trackpoint is also not as good imo there's very little stem left in the nub itself which makes the whole thing feel stiff and not as good. If you are considering the T480 as a computer, for daily use and not just as a hobby, you obviously aren't going to feel the extra power in the t14 gen 5 as you are looking for a budget computer. Believe me, for general tasks and even light gaming, quad core is enough. The OLED panel is much better than whatever came on the T480 though.
@@dcfbf You're right about that, but where can I get good batteries? On Lenovo's website they're 80 USD, if they're original, but it's crazy to pay that much. I'm considering an X270 for light use, as a secondary PC it's not bad I guess, but I'm worried about spending so much on 2 new batteries, they're very expensive
I usually buy mine off Amazon or Ebay depending on which one's cheaper and I look for ones that people have bought before. They most likely aren't going to be full capacity like the OEM ones but having a battery is better than not. Also make sure to not buy it from China if you can, even if it is cheaper, value your time (2-3 weeks vs 1 week max if you buy domestically), and also you aren't even allowed to ship lithium batteries internationally. I did get my x61 battery this way though as sometimes this is the only option.
can someone advice me if which Lenovo thinkpad is best to use with windows 7 ? (just for home and office work)
Search Thinkpad (model) drivers. Look on Lenovo's website, click on manual update, click on the dropdown menu that says operating systems, choose windows 7, and see if the thinkpad has windows 7 drivers. A lot of people have different preferences and opinions for their thinkpads and you can find a lot about how people think of individual thinkpad models. You should do research for which one you like based on what features you want. If you need to know what models there are, wikipedia is a good option to look. if you are trying to have a little bit more longevity, try to get one with a quad core and either the option for 16 gb of ram or ram slots. But if you are asking me, the T480 is most likely the most powerful option for you unless you are willing to get the P series which is going to be big and heavy.
Awesome collection of vintage ThinkPads! If you're looking for a retro style OS, you can try MX Linux XFCE or Q4OS Trinity.
@@dare2bdifferent1Thanks I’ll look into those distros when I want to install linux on another system
Pls suggest..which is better for coding t480 or t490? Waiting for your reply
@@nagarjunagatta4792 If you’re asking me, t480. The t490 really doesn’t have much that would make it better than the t480 when you compare the downsides to the t490

hey I’m only borderline autistic according to the online tests I’ve taken
i love these types of laptops. Chunky, but not to chunky, that feels like its sturdy but doesnt feel like its gonna snap in half like many modern laptops do (slim laptops will be the death of me). Planning on getting this model for my birthday but I still have some time to maybe switch and look at other models of thinkpad. Honestly just looking for someone to suggest me another thinkpad i should look into.
@@foodtalk4099 What are you looking for in a Thinkpad?
The buttons that you speak of on the T480 might bemore ergonomic, but the downside is: due to its raised shape, the buttons tend to leave scuff marks on the screen over time, especially if it is carried often in a loaded backpack for instance. I just bought one and the screen has a visible scuff from the middle button below the keyboard.
Oh I did not know that because the older ones didn't do that even with the raised trackpoint buttons. Though it shouldn't be too visible if the screen is on and bright right? Even so, I think that ergonomics is more important than a perceived physical flaw on the display as laptops can be replaced but my hand and wrist can't be.
@@dcfbf Its pretty noticible with any dark color. Its a bit annoying and distracting... But its still usable
ah and its probably right in the center of where you are viewing huh? Well you could maybe upgrade to the 1440p panel or replace the display to fix it. I had gotten a used laptop where the keycaps worn had into the display and they stood out quite a bit to the point where they were altering the how text looked on the display, made it almost completely unusable.
I had the laptop before this generation and it was a beast. Absolutely monster of a machine and I miss it dearly. I currently have a Lenovo Legion pro 5 gaming laptop that is also really nice, but I miss my thinkpad. Great old laptops❤️
how long the battery lasts from 100% to like 15 or 20? i mean the big/external one, but im also curious abt the internal one
The external one lasts about 4 hours during regular use(web browsing and some video watching) though it is aftermarket so the OEM one should last longer. The internal one lasts only around 1-2 hours doing the same workload.
@@dcfbf ooh i see, so its about 5-6 hours combined, not too shabby for an old hardware to be honest, still make a great portable workstation, especially with those upgrade options
@@azaz19 well depends on what you want to do. At the end of the day, its still an old quad core no matter that you upgrade that is all you can get. But if you just need a cheap laptop that can get you through the day and works well its definitely a good option
hello fellow thinkpad enthusiast from riverside lol
Are you going to do the t480 25th aniversary keyboard mod?
Nah it’s just for someone I know and he just needed a cheap reliable laptop. If it was for me, I would though

Good to know. Windows 7 will be the last good version of Windows for one reason: after you leave a computer offline for more than two months (W10/W11) it will prompt you for an internet connection to access Windows. I know because I've got a newer computer that I left off for like 4 months, it told me it would not let me get into my account unless I connected to wifi. Windows 10 will break before Windows 7 for that reason alone. A good thing to do is clone your Windows drive with Steam and all the singleplayer games you care about installed, turn off steam auto startup in Windows (so you don't open it mistakenly while connected to the internet and download steam updates), leave autologin enabled, and disable your wifi/ethernet adapters. Also don't forget to run each game at least once, some of them have retarded ass DRM that requires a first launch with internet enabled, games like 7 Days to Die/Dragon Quest Heros 1 or 2 do that, I'm sure there are more even if you only want to play single player.
What do you mean about windows 10/11 needing internet connection after a while of leaving it off? I didn’t use my Thinkpad T14 for about 6 months and it still logged in just fine without internet?
@@dcfbf It might be for accounts setup with a PIN (alternate password?) When it happens again, I'll link an image. If you do the workaround to setup a local, "no telemetry" administrator account then it's probably something that won't happen.
@@TenshiHinanawi-uq3oy oh I just used a refular microsoft account…well yeah sure edit: you can link and image bc I’m interested

My dell d830 literally has similar specs to your thinkpad X61, it's just that my dell also has a dedicated nvidia quadro NVS 135M gpu and it's 64 bit instead
The 32-bit operating system is just because I upgraded from an original install of XP Pro 32bit though yeah the Nvidia gpu would provide more power when compared to the Intel GMA X3100.
if they update to the latest chromium it wont work properly from chromium 109 to 129 for example
