I have trained horses as my living for over 35 years. It is a job I love and I am always developing ways to help the human horse interaction to be easy, stress free and fun for both parties. I would like to show ideas to people who are stuck with their horses and don't know where to turn. I will try and answer any questions on the subject if it helps the horse and human live comfortably together
How to trailer load a frightened horse without force and stress
An explanation of how to load your horse without pressure. Check out my other videos showing me train horses to do other things without pressure. I also do on line courses which you can read about on my website 💕conniecolfox.com/

I fell in love with this horse and he is now staying longer at our barn. He came to me as a difficult horse to ride. I took him through the 10 steps I take all the horse I train and that I teach on my course. I was told he was nervous and reared. I started training using positive reinforcement and because I was working on how he felt rather than what he did, he never put a foot wrong. How ever I didn't know he had a history of being scared of the trailer until it turned up and this was a how I helped him. I worked with him for 35 mins on the first day and about 17 mins on the secoond. I hope you think he is as magnificent as I do
I do use pressure and release whilst training but try and introduce it to a relaxed horse and reward them so the pressure has a positive history. I want my horses to go into the world of humans with a robust understanding of how we want to handle them and also when they are fearful the pressure we might have to put on them will have a positive result. For instance riding on a road and a vehicle frightens the horse we need to restrict the behaviour that might be a spook, spin or shoot off. We need to control that so there isn't an accident but the horse can be put straight back in to a neutral and find calm.

i have a question! i love your videos and way of working and want to try to use them on my horse. My mare doesnt want to be brushed all of sudden, she will look very annoyed and i cant find any reason for it! how would you tackle thus with positive reinforcement
First i would wonder why all of a sudden she doesn't like being brushed. Has she got any discomfort, skin infections, stomach ulcers. If we know there is no pain involved then I would start to reward for relaxation. So only when she isn't nuzzlling your pockets. Have you done any work like this before.
@@myyounghorses thankyou for the reply! i have rewarded with food before and she responds well to this but does get a bit impatient for the food! i really want to start using positive reinfocement with her, because your approach seems much more kind, but i am a bit lost at where to start :(
@elinguelinckx624 you need to start behind a stable door so you can ignore the impatience and wait calmly until she is standing in a neutral posture. If you go into my website conniecolfox.com/ you should be able to book a free call so I can get you started. 💕
😍😍😍😍😍 brilliant 😍😍😍😍😍
Thanks so much
The first trailer loading video I’ve come across where I’m not cringing at the trainer obviously ignoring the horses feelings and communication. Thank you thank you thank you 🙏
Thank you for watching it
It is a great experience to see a horse treated with respect and great skill. I grew up immediately after WW2, in an area where farmers still had horses on their farms. Many of the farmers whipped their horses. It seemed frightening to a little boy.
I am sorry you had to experience that
I love how much I can learn about dog training watching horse training videos. And I wonder about that going back in. With fearful dogs I use challenges like strange ground textures to build confidence, and I have noticed that some will want to do the challenges long after they are confident. I think they remember when it was hard and it feels good to remember overcoming that challenge. Also, beautiful horse.
Thats really interesting, I always think they are showing me how clever they are, but I am not sure whether their brain works that way so feeling good for overcoming a challenge sounds more probable
That was absolutely incredible!! Great job! Thank you for posting! Now I've got to try that. Thank you!
Thank you so much x
Beautiful example of showing respect for the horse and listening to what he is feeling to guide the process of overcoming fear. Lovely!!!
This is beautiful❤
Thank you 🐎🐎🐎

Really excellent training, this is so nice to see ♥️♥️
Thanks so much
@myyounghorses I work with mustangs (as a hobby). I train almost exclusively with +R. And there are many skills (such as trailer loading) I teach initially at liberty. Because it’s remarkable how willing, brave and quick learning these wonderful animals are when we recognize their feelings and give them some choice. It’s just so, so refreshing to see professionals utilizing more gentle methods ♥️
@@ostarasloom7205 Over here in the uk the horses aren't as wild as yours can be, i am assuming you are from the US. There are some very unhandled horses but most have seen humans even if its in a negative context. I did have a mare who was 7 and had had a foal and neither had ever been touched. The mare responded really welll. She is now competing at quite a high level. You must be super good at reading them as I expect they won't tolerate to many mistakes. Do you post any of your training?
@ yes, I’m in the US 🙂 The mustangs are interesting, some of the herds have some exposure to people in the wild and some do not. And of course their experiences with humans during the roundups and while in holding affect them as well. So nice to hear of how successful your mare is! It is no surprise though considering she has a fantastic trainer ;) I do think I’m pretty good at reading them. Otherwise I’d think I’d have been quite seriously hurt by now 😆 As far as tolerating mistakes.. I think that kind of depends on the context of the mistake. If a mistake has been made because focus is being put on the wrong things (rushing, trying to get a specific task done at a specific time - no matter what, choosing to ignore the horses feelings, etc).. then I would say yes, you can expect them to react quite negatively. But we can hardly hold that against them! However, when it comes to innocent little slip ups, such as reaching towards them a little too quick when they’re not ready, thinking you broke down a learning task in to small enough pieces when you didn’t, etc. I have actually found them to be remarkably, remarkably forgiving. Sometimes it moves me to tears. No, I don’t post any content. I don’t have much of an interest to. Just prefer to kind of do my own thing over here quietly. 🙂
@@ostarasloom7205 Thats really interesting. I have always done it as a business and the pressures can def slow things down. I am wanting to try and make an income elsewhere so I can train fewer horse better 💕
❤
Though it was not a lot of time each day, that took a lot of patience and continual observation.
That was so lovely to see! I think your methods are fabulous!! A delight to watch!! Do keep up your brilliant work! 👏

Absolutely wonderful mostly stress-free sessions. How impressive that he invited himself in and seemed to lose all fear.
Brilliant to see him feeling so confident and enjoying himself while learning. Can’t recommend Connie’s course enough!

Thanks so much. I haven't done one in a while I must find time
I’ve never seen a horse try to roll into something to get it to leave 😂 that’s unique
I think I knew he couldn't get rid of me so he was trying to get rid of his stress 💕
I love your videos
Thanks so much
Being locked in a stable enrages that horse.
I think you are right he is definitely worse in the stable
You're going to get hurt😂
I took on a mare that had 6 homes, wound up at the knackers, the guy who had the abattoir saw she had good lines and paper's thought she would make more kont than being in a can of dogfood. Bounced around a few more owners one woman had her less than 3 weeks in a box stall and it took two men over half an hour to catch her to get her on a truck. The woman never managed to touch her. When I got her you'd think she was an aggressive stallion. She'd charge you when you came near the fence snorting. She'd kick at you, bite. Trimming her feet took well over an hour and a lot of patience from my farrier. Every vet, trainer and farrier who met her said she's the smartest horse they've met and that's half the problem. I sent her to one trainer and she did everything in her power to try and kill him. Everyone said give up. I don't believe in harsh training and I had nothing but patience and time. Now she's like a big dog, i can put a Baby on her. She walked up to the mounting block when i was in the paddock recently and stared at me, she let me hop on her no saddle, no halter and just quietly walked around with me on her back. She's like a big dog these days and loves attention. A mare who used to avoid being touched. Aggression stems from fear. With patience and gentleness we can transform fear into trust.
What an amazing experience for you both, it seems like fate you met each other, how incredibly heart warming
@myyounghorses wonderful to see your gentle methods. So glad there are horses out there finally learning they can have trusting homes and to see your videos inspiring others 💜
❤you are a best Trainer 😊
Wow, congratulations, you know you get the same result with other forms of training right, also this type of training doesn't work with all horses just like pressure training doesn't work for all horses It's a great way to train but it's not nessisarily better
the thing about training with food is that they feel good about the food so you can change their emotions. Training with pressure there is often a negative feeling so you might get to the same result. A horse "behaving" but to me it is how the horse feels about the behaviour. If he feels relaxed and happy then their is no need for him to attack me. I hope that makes sense. Thanks for the comment
Certain horses develop strong expectations to food, and when there is none, you are in hospital then. Pressure, positive reinforcement, countercontitionig, and desensitization are all part of the same toolbox for individual horse training. You can not separate them, or claim that one beats the other every time, more so because in the majority of cases, you should use a combination of them.
@@myyounghorses dude.... if pressure training is a negative experiance then you are doing it wrong, pressure training shouldn't be positive or negative, it should just be as neutral as having a conversation, because ultimately that's what it is, it's a conversation with your horse in their natural language, pressure and release is a huge way horses comunicate, it's how they move as a herd, set boundaries, get to know each other, asking them to do something is no more negative to them then you being asked to do something from your boss, and also it's how you set a boundary for no, by limiting that ability you actually make an extremely toxic relationship with your horse, both parties should have the abilities to say no, no is not negative, it's just healthy comunication for both horses and humans to understand So why are you saying one is better then the other when you don't even know how to do one correctly
@@AnimaTriste you explained it a lot better then I did, thank you
What an awesome response! I’ve always subscribed to ‘never feed your horse with your hands unless you want it to bite you’ but you’ve shown that you can teach a horse how to come up and get a treat as long as it has the right attitude and as long as you say it’s okay. I have seen so many people get this wrong and up being completely dominated by their horse. Moving him around is key, and getting him to back up nicely. Superb 👌
Thanks so much for the comment.

Thank you for this video. That we even need to have a video with this title amazes me. Gentleness over coercion every time
I have no feelings for people who bully other people ,but I much have good thoughts of this movie well done
Thank you very much 🐎
I appreciate your method. Giving lots of choices and helping the horse understand what behaviours he need to show with chasing his feet around the ring well done
You are so kind
Outstanding! Love this!
You are so patient
Thanks so much for your kind commetn I'm not really very patient, I just know what I am doing is going to work for the horse's long term well being and a quick fix won't.so I just keep at it 💕🐎💕
How do you train them to do this
i use food rewards
What do you mean when you say “I’ve marked it”?
So you teach the horse that if you make a noise like a click then reward then the click will equal a reward which they want. So the will learn to increase the behaviour when they hear the click. So if everytime they touched a object you clicked and rewarded they would then increase the times they touch the object because they want more food. There are lots of things you need to be aware of as you don't want a horse that muggs your pockets for food so the first thing i teach is to stand in a neutral posture to recieve the food. I hope that helps
Do you teach how to get your horse to come to be mounted like that?
I teach him to come when I call him and then bit by bit I have asked him to move his quarters over rewarding each step until he understands the sequence
Absoloutely love this! ❤ Great work. I came to this straight after a different trainer's video. What a difference in energy and techniques. Beautiful work Connie. Lovely to see. I'm subscribing. ❤
