My father was in the 36th Division 141 IR. He said he had a 1903A3 rifle. His MOS was changed in July 1944 to Light Machine Gun. He was then issued a 1911 pistol. I have a photo of him with his pistol belt on and a holstered 1911.

were there any tropical uniforms worn in italy?
Yes, the german army was issuing a lot of tropical uniforms for soldiers stationed in italy. Two good examples of this are the 3rd panzergrenadier division and the 15th panzergrenadier division. The third panzergrenadier division went on to wear tropical uniforms in France through the summer months in 1944 after being pulled out of italy.

When I was in the U.S. Army, we had M-16 rifles, and we would release the bolt, close the dust cover, and pull the trigger. Pulling the trigger was not part of inspection arms for the M-1 rifle?
