You know, it kind of inspires me how some people just get through life in spite of some really hardships. There's a few good inspirational stories out there, but this has got to be right up there along with a British jockey called Bob Champion, diagnosed with cancer, fought through it, entered the Grand National on a horse that was set for the knackers yard...... race is over 4 miles long, over some of the biggest fences you'll ever see, I'm not going to tell you the result, but they were gambled into being the favourite in the race......... and the bookmakers got taken to the cleaners, think it was 1981 Grand National if you have a look

What a guy Damien Oliver is to be a winner on media puzzle and not only losing his brother to a race fall a week earlier but losing his father to a race fall as well when he was younger and to salute his brother at the winning post brings a heavy heart that beats faster and longer I sad to see a loved one go love Anthony Fed ex lol

Came here after watching the movie, emotional stuff. Watching this video, when they started to take the lead, two birds flew by right at that moment and I burst into tears. Made me feel like that was a sign from his brother, maybe, maybe not. Great race.

it's heartbreaking to hear Vinnie Roe can't go on in the call, but Media Puzzle is a real awesome stayer and it was incredible he could carry Damien to victory on what would be the hardest days of his life. Damien had the whole country riding with him that day.

Lost my left testicle in this race backing Doremis, i really thought it had won and my heart was racing thinking i could now afford a divorce but it wasnt to be and 23 years later the wife still has my lefty in a vice like grip...F@%king hate might n power.

Nothing Leica Dane, only 3 y.o. won Vic Derby only 3 days previous then forced into this 3200m race following. Insensitivity in respect of horse's young age by trainer Gai Waterhouse! Lucky didn't breakdown so underdeveloped. Even 4 yo in Melb. Cup is a rarity based on better judgement, still immature for such a distance. Melb cup should ban 3 y.o runners to escape the more greedy insensitive owners.

Sensational run by Give the Slip, had the jockey not made a tactical error by going to the rail he would have won comfortably. Was still going at a decent clip in the straight no one else bar ethereal could get near him. Ethereal was just a beast. One of the best modern day Melbourne Cups this one.

There's been a lot of great races for the Melbourne Cup, but this is one of the best - classic.

In this 1983 Melbourne Cup there was Kiwi and the also rans only. Kiwi blitzed this Melbourne Cup like no other horse in history. NZ horses are the world’s best. So there!

Terrible call

I love this video its a lesson for everyone and for me. Life is too short theres no point waking up grumpy or getting into fights what for its not worth it. At the moment myself and my family are going through a rough patch and were sticking together and just appreciate each other

Wayne Wilson a true legend, another piece of this story which adds to the emotion of the most famous of Melbourne cups. Damian, Dermot and the Puzzle unforgettable. As Damian said "always appreciate your loved ones". Wise words.

People who criticise the caller seriously get a life. Il never forget Damian raising his arm to the sky. What a moment in time for racing in aus.

I've just seen this for the first time because I was at Eagle Farm races when on that day. Yes Wayne Wilson should have called the place getters as they went over the line but otherwise it was an excellent call and Wayne was always a theatrical caller and this was a very theatrical result.

Love how Perisian Punch held an Arc winner and three horses he was condeding over a stone to! The most legendary flat horse I've ever witnessed.

Race caller didnt even spot Kiwi until it had hit the lead.

I should say this is an emotional but also a little bit controversial call by Wayne Wilson. No matter what kind of thing this call is in your mind, he will surely be remembered. Sadly this voice can no longer be heard by all of us now since Wayne, the caller himself, died of cancer in June 2014. Rest in peace, as well as Media Puzzle, which was put down after breaking a leg in 2006 Ascot Gold Cup in Britain.
