Vertical Antenna for Tight Spaces
This video shows a vertical ham radio antenna system that is mostly composed of commercial parts.
The focus of this antenna is space-restricted places or summits, where a wire antenna does not fit. The whole antenna system weighs in total 740g or 26oz.
This antenna was extensively tested on several SOTA summits, from the 40m-band up to the 6m-band.
Parts:
The antenna itself is a widely used base-loaded antenna that is sold under different brand names, such as GABIL 7350T, Sharman MD-3500, Kommunica HF-PRO-2-PLUS-T, or recently, the MA-8300 from WIMO:
www.wimo.com/en/ma-8300-portable-vertical-shortwave-50mhz-antenna
The antenna-mounting bracket consists of a 25cm-long ground spike with a BNC feeder-connector from the eBay seller bd7-maple:
www.ebay.com/itm/176315778321
Originally, I discovered this similar bracket from the TH-cam channel @HOAHamRadio.
I added 8 x 2.6m-long radial wires with loops at the end for easy handling. I use two banana plugs to quickly connect the radials to the mounting bracket. Each banana plug is connected to an M4 O-terminal which is screwed to the bracket housing.
I used a 3m-long RG174A/U coaxial feeder cable with two mounted BNC plugs from SOTABEAMS:
www.sotabeams.co.uk/co-axial-cable-rg174a-u-with-or-without-connectors-fitted/
To keep the radial wires and coax tidy, I use a wire winder from SOTABEAMS:

Testing the SOTAmat app for spotting off-grid

This video shows how one can spot on a SOTA summit using the free SOTAmāt Android app. When off-the-grid, SOTAmāt makes reliable spotting possible, by using only a portable HF rig, its microphone and a smartphone. The telescopic antenna itself is pretty light and therefore not very sturdy, but nicely built. If you take a bit care (like with all telescopic antennas), you'll be fine. The support with all connectors is very robust. Personally, I prefer light stuff in general, since I have to carry it on my back to a mountain 😅.

I asked the seller back then for this longer ground spike, because it can be helpful when the soil is too hard, e.g. by using a pile of rocks. After my request to the seller, he added an item with this 25cm long spike. But in the meantime, I just realized, that the link got invalid, so I just adapted it to the corresponding item. There are so many versions to choose from.

I watch a lot of youtube videos. Initially though it was a problem with my computer. I think it's worth perusing a problem like this with the company that you bought the equipment from but after seeing so many videos and posts about this, I don't think I'd ever buy a GoPro cam. Especially if it took you so much time and effort to get them to acknowledge the problem in the first place. It seems companies like this just thrive on the cash that new models and features bring without proper R&D and then don't take responsibility for their mistakes creating a product that will eventually just get thrown away into landfill because it doesn't work. :(

    • @PortableRadio
      @PortableRadio 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

I completely agree with every sentence you wrote! Also, a GoPro cam is not a cheap product from one of the Chinese online stores. I definitely won't be buying another product from them, especially as it seems they haven't really solved the problem, according to one comment below. We can only warn other potential buyers about this potential error.

    • @PortableRadio

RG-58 is fine (for VHF I also use this), but for HF I prefer thinner and therefore lighter coaxial cables. Typical ones for portable operation are RG-316 and RG-174. I found a very flexible one from Sotabeams: RG-174 A/U MIL. I use the same 5m long coax since years for at least 500 SOTA activations in summer heat and in icy winter conditions. I also accidentally stepped on it multiple times, but it still works fine.

No, for this antenna I always use 8 radials plus the coax, also with the full size radiator (20-6m). I don't have all the data at hand, but using only 4 radials will work for sure, but with higher earth losses.

Looks like it's a better built version of HF-1 antenna. Which was available in many stores few years ago. The performance seem to be the same - nonexistent on 80m, marginal on 40m, quite good on 20m and up. It's worth experimenting with ground radials.

Thanks for your feedback! I found a German article about the HF-P1 portable antenna (I assume you are referring to) which is a bit shorter but has the coil in the middle. I also assume the performance is comparable to this antenna, except there is a bit of magic involved, hi. And yes, if you use longer and more radials you can get a few more dB, but that adds to the overall weight. My goal was to have about one wavelength of radials at 20m, without the coax screen. That seemed to me to be the sweet spot for efficiency, ease of set-up and weight.

Hi Andreas, Indeed, a very cool idea that works out of the box with my existing equipment. So no new gadgets to buy 😉. It just needs some preparation on the sotamat.com website, before you are able to spot. Your video about the LoRa mesh network that you presented on your @HB9BLA channel is also very innovative! I wish there were more LoRa or MeshCom gateways in remote places. 73 Stephan

Thanks for putting this in a video!

I agree, the GoPro customer support, at least here in central Europe, is terrible. I spent many hours with them without getting help. And yes, they know that they have an audio problem with many GoPro 9 cams. But if they offer you a replacement, I would go for it as long as you have warranty on it and hope you'll get a working one.
