    There is far more gas and fouling escaping the vent hole than gas and fouling generated by the charge in the pan. You prick the vent hole because of the powder charge in the barrel, not from the pan charge. I believe the erroneous commenter either doesn’t shoot, own or understand a flint lock and how they work.

      Hey Robert. Traditionally graphite is and is still used as a lubricant . Black powder shooters say it's used as a water moisture inhibitor to help the KNo3 from gaining moisture. As We speak I am doing a experiment to test this. Stay tuned.

I have a several pounds of Old Eynesford left in different grades which I quite like and then I have a few pounds of the original Goex left. When I burn through all this I'll make my own from now on, but of all the powders that have come and gone in the last 50 years Elephant from Brazil was the absolute worst factory black powder ever packaged, shipped and sold to the shooting public.

    My guess is that glazing refers to polishing the grains so they have a shinny surface, unlike gazing a donut. It would make it less likely that there would be powder in the form of dust at the bottom of the container after shipping. I have heard it slows the open burn rate and wonder if that makes it “safer”. One old reference described adding graphite but it was in a very small amount. Why? Maybe it slows absorption of water? Maybe it makes the surface of the grains conductive so static electricity would be less of a problem, so “safer”. Swiss is in business, some one ought to be able to find out what they actually do and why they do it.

  • @jertres2887
    @jertres2887 วันที่ผ่านมา

    So, I don’t own and have never shot a flintlock but I’d think at least some of the residue in and around the pan would be a reflection on the priming powder(schutzen) but I don’t know. You remilled factory Swiss, did you then puck, granulate and sort it? And did you reapply “heavy graphite glazing”?

    • @lamebeavertradingco.1642

      Thank you. At this point trading for the Swiss Black Powder was not a total waste, now I know those who say Swiss is the Best, shoot cleaner, more powerful, are full of it. Re-milling that 100 grams did a little better than the Heavily Graphite Glazed Swiss. The weight of the re-milled powder change also, thus showing the Graphite does add weight to the powder. Those who try and compare volume of Swiss, say to Scheutzen with a equal volume have no idea of the weight diff. That's why I weighed the re-milled to get a equal weight. Like I have stated , I think in different terms. I just wish some would just start thinking and asking why.

    My Pietta 1861 Navy had the bolt stop coming up too quick as well - I just extended the ramps ahead of the notches a bit... Mine shot right to point of aim with 25 Gr of Pyrodex and a Hornady round ball (forget the actual diameter but standard). Oh and I use the lubed felt wads. This is just for load and shoot, I wouldn't use lubed wads if I intended to leave it loaded for any length of time - dry wads though, I would - I'd just lube over the balls. The 1861 is really a great shooter. And I don't mind the barrel being a bit too long for historical perfection... Thanks for the vid! Enjoyed it and congrats on your new Pietta.
