FIRST LISTEN to Unknown Pleasures ALBUM || Joy Division
This is my first time ever reaction to the album Unknown Pleasures by the English 80's alternative band Joy Division. This is the first half of the album 'Unknown Pleasures' and is their most popular album. The bass, guitar and vocals really stood out to me in this album and really reminded me of all the other popular tracks from it's time and more recent tracks in the indie rock scene that I enjoy.

If you like Joy Division and Radiohead check out Bauhaus, contemporaries of both JD and The Smiths. "Bella Legosi's Dead" and "She's In Parties" are among their most well-known and a good place to start.

24 hrs and She's Lost Control are by far the best Joy Division tracks. Love will tear us apart is a decent single, and clearly laid the groundwork for what New Order did the rest of the decade, but by no means Joy Division's best work.

Not sure if you know but unfortunately the lead singer Ian Curtis commited suicide in 1980 at the age of 23. He suffered from depression and epilepsy which caused him to have seizures, he wrote all the lyrics and they in my oponion are very important as he used the music to express himself, you can feel the emotion in his voice as well, unfortunately they only have 2 albums, this one and Closer (released after he died), I really hope you react to it at some point, Closer is even darker and the lyrics are very heavy and haunting, it is basically Ian's suicide note, very heartbreaking, and it's sad that the band members said they thought they were "just lyrics" as they reflected his state of mind.

I first heard this at a party believe it or not, more a gathering of like minded punks. It was dark, fucking dark and definitely the darkest thing I'd ever heard back then and probably since. THey made Leonard Cohen sound like the Smurfs ;-) This was 1979 and I was 16.

Good reaction, but this is nowhere near the best track on the album, as great a song as it is. Shadowplay, Day of the Lords, She's Lost Control, New Dawn Fades all incredible tracks. Second and final album Closer is also incredible, plus singles they released that weren't on either album. Transmission is a brilliant single and Atmosphere might be their greatest song ever. It still sends shivers up my spine well over 40 years later. Tragically the singer, Ian Curtis took his own life in 1980 on the eve of their first American tour. The remaining members eventually regrouped to form New Order, another band well worth checking out.

Great reaction, yeah New Dawn Fades is a great track, for part 2 Shadowplay and She's Lost Control are great. It was the bass guitar on New Dawn Fades but Peter Hook plays the bass very much like a lead guitar and it became a big part of the Joy Division/New Order sound, along with Stephen Morris's super fast very rhythmic drums

Glad that you're checking out the whole album. Yeah, the entire album has a sense of dread and foreboding about it. The same is true with the second and final album "Closer" (1980). I think the gloomy tone comes from Ian Curtis' struggle with life spilling over into the art. I love this entire album, but New Dawn Fades is definitely a highlight for me. By the way, if you're interested, there was a really good film called "Control" from 2007 that was about Ian Curtis and Joy Division. It's been years since I've seen the film, but it was really good and the actor that plays Ian Curtis did an pretty impressive job and actually sounded a lot like Curtis when singing. The film is a great insight into the band, and is useful in adding context to the music. By the way, I enjoyed the reaction. Liked and subscribed. I'm especially looking forward to your dive into Radiohead and Joy Division. Another 1980s post-punk band that you should consider checking out is The Chameleons. They don't have that gloomy vibe like Joy Division, but they're pretty fantastic and criminally underrated in my opinion.

Fun fact about this album. They made it as a Punk album to start of with but then invited a producer who was on all kinds of drugs to add all of these funky sounds. Some of the band disliked it while others loved it. In a way they accidentally made 1 of the best post-punk albums to date. Also on the topic of dread while this album has hints their second album is complete dread following the tragedy of what happened to the lead singer, it's really depressing but a work of art.

A new subscriber here for Joy Division, I love your honest reaction to my favourite band. They were so influential onso many bands considering they were not very commercially successful. They were not around for long because of the death of the lead singer Ian Curtis, Bernard Sumner on guitar, the legendary Peter Hook on Bass with the metronomic powerhouse Stephen Morris on drums. I hope you do the whole album but is not at least listen to New Dawn Fades another classic from the band. And maybe sog into their history and how they went on to become New Order. One of rocks great tragedies. Some.classics not on the album, Transmission, Isolation, Heart and Soul and Atmosphere.

It really makes me smile to watch someone discover JD so many years after I first played it. For the record, the album came out on Friday, June 15th, 1979. I eagerly bought it and played it as a 15 year old on Saturday, June 16th, 1979 😉 It really was a game changer in the course of Post-Punk music, although the same has to be said of "Public Image" by Public Image Limited. If you haven't heard it before, you need to do so immediately, if not sooner. If you liked the bass on Disorder, you'll love the bass on "Public Image" from the very first bar 😍

The beauty of Hookie's bass sound & style, was almost there as a "lead" or being the melody on a lot of JD tracks. I envy the fact he can play a Rickey 4003 with effortless ease too.... If you want a great Joy Division track that often gets overlooked, then check this out..... th-cam.com/video/J4RHLFSfD2A/w-d-xo.htmlsi=iw53bSSAfTEm3R5S promise you, if you think Disorder is good, this will send you into another world. The strain in Ian's voice, the emotions are all there and it demonstrates all the complexity in his mind at the time. Nowadays someone might've been aware enough to have a word and keep a close eye on Curtis. Sadly hindsight is such a wonderful idea when it becomes academic anyway 😢😢😢

Interesting thought experiment: Around this same time U2 had used Martin Hannett as producer on their early single "11 O'Clock Tick Tock" but found him difficult to work with, so instead ended up going with Steve Lillywhite for their first album. I've always wondered what the respective albums would have sounded like had U2 stuck with Hannett for "Boy" and JD had gone with Lillywhite for "Unknown Pleasures."
