Repivot22
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 11 ก.พ. 2020
Repivot22 is the feeble attempt to video document some of the work I do. For more than 20 years I have repaired antique watches and small clocks. My processes do not employ computer aided drafting or machining. Almost all of the lathe work is done on a standard 8mm collet watchmakers lathe.

Repivoting a Center Wheel
Some may rightly ask why go through the effort of doing such a repair. I can think of a couple of reasons. Firstly, for the educational value to those who watch this video. Secondly, as practice, so when a more valuable piece comes in for repair, you already know the steps needed to make it work again. But primarily, to demonstrate to my students that it is rarely an issue of IF something can be repaired or not. It is an issue of having the skills to do the repairs. Having and honing the skills. I also want my students too keep moving forward on their projects instead of stopping because their skills are yet to be developed to fix their own mistakes.

Removing broken screw from a barrel arbor
มุมมอง 3.2Kปีที่แล้ว
This mainspring barrel arbor belongs to a Langendorf 1 ladies watch. The diameter of the drill was .50mm. You can see that the center was not perfect, and the drill wobbled a bit. This is bad form, worthy of critique, but the drill was small enough that I did not cut into the threads at all, so it worked out. Thanks for watching The video referenced about making a drill bit. th-cam.com/video/jg...
Stem, winding pinion, crown wheel slippage
มุมมอง 1.2Kปีที่แล้ว
This is a simple technique I use sometimes for average quality watches. Making a stem is simple enough, but sometimes that isn't the only problem. This trick eliminates the need for more expensive gear cutting of the crown wheel & winding pinion. I've had these pictures and video footage for a year and a half and just now have edited this to present to you. Sorry for the lack of videos lately. ...

In retrospect, I could have made a new escape wheel out of steel and not had the problems I had with the brass I tried. Also in the last two clips if you notice a silver color on a couple escape wheel teeth, it's because the wheel was originally plated nickel. It's not the residual of sold...

Spare parts assortment, thoughts
มุมมอง 1.1K2 ปีที่แล้ว
I mention what I have is a 25 year accumulation. Actually, I've been actively aquiring and sorting miscellaneous parts for about 13 years. These 2 cabinets on my bench aren't my only cabinets. The assortment is ever expanding.

Cutting a 56 tooth gear, 5.1mm diameter on a watchmaker's lathe
มุมมอง 8K3 ปีที่แล้ว
1. Sorry for the shakiness and jerkyness of the first part of this video. Neither my camera holder nor the cabinet on which my lathe sits is very steady. This makes the video footage at time seem shaky. 2. You'll note in the last clip that while the gears work together, they are not well matched. They work because the pinion is driving the wheel. If the wheel was driving the pinion, it would no...
1820s musical pocket watch complete service
มุมมอง 2.7K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Here I discuss the various steps and thoughts concerning the service of this nearly 200 year old watch. The screw repair and replacement for this watch is shown here: th-cam.com/video/vyKHvZNGpIk/w-d-xo.html My apologies to those viewing this on a standard computer. Much of this video will appear slightly blurry. After posting videos on this channel for over a year and a half now, I just now no...

Puh that is a nerve wrecking work. There are for sure many attempts needed to get one out? The result looks good!
Phil you are amazing Ralph and I watched this we are going to share this with my family. Hope all is going well
Excellent
Excellent video! Thank you! TH-cam content should be like this - very practicable and to the point, something anyone can learn from.
Thanks for sharing this. I do have similar problem. Just smaller movement.
Great video, thank you, at what RPM do you spin your lathe?
Making a great video like this is time consuming. We understand. Greetings from Ireland.
very nice, it's always very interesting and good for improve the skills
Not today, not tommorow, but some day I will get to this level :) great job!
Thanks for this interesting video! When you drill, are you hand holding the pivot drill in a pin vise? If so, how do you ensure that the drilled hole is perpendicular? I've seen another technique using a hollow handle pin vise slipped over the tailstock spindle to try and keep it steady.
Bravo! ZIM movement super simple for beginners who want to venture into the world of watch repair.
Fantastic job. Thank you for sharing it.
Amazing video as always. Do you source your blued steel from a US manufacturer? Are you able to share where you purchase from? Thank you.
I'm happy with another interesting video, greetings from Ireland
Wow! This video was exactly what I needed! Thank you for sharing your technique, tips, and tricks.
Estou tentando fazer isso a bastante tempo, muito difícil de alinhar e conseguir que fique bom
Me who currently is trying to figure out how to fix the hairspring from my great-great-grandfathers pocket watch (made around 1895).
Given the angle of attack of the contrate gear on the pinion I would expect to not be as smooth as the more common wheel gear to pinion action.
Fantasmagorical, excellent tutorial, I thankyou and so do my hairsprings.
What lathe are you working with?
2 years going and this remains the best video online for hair spring repair. Thanks for spending the time to make this
Outstanding. Hats off to you sir.
Where can I get the tools you used?
At 14 minutes I'm uncertain what actions are being taken with both sets of tweezers. Are you essentially gripping with both and rotating the opposite ends of the tweezers downwards to stretch the upper portion of the hairspring to bring about flatness?
Hi, beautiful video, can i ask you what module is the gear? thank you
10:30 To state it perhaps more balanced, if you find the point where there is the least and most deviation and look 90 degrees between them, you ought to be able, by careful inspection, see a point at which the deviation begins and perhaps see a flat or a clear angular bend, helping you to know exactly where to make your correction. You stated the best philosophy to use to approach repairs, no matter how complicated. First, make sure it is untangled (because it can be both bent and tangled. Then start at the center and make sure it is in round. No matter how many other issues there are, if it isn't in round, you won't be able to see them. So start one loop at a time and make it purdy. Then go back and work on making it flat. Then, lastly, address the final section where it must pass through the regulator and attach to the balance wheel. Step by step, one at a time, with patience and care, and you will end up with either a fully functioning hairspring or two hairsprings, in which case, you don't have to worry about straightening it anymore! 😅 I will also say that, because of the importance of a properly oscillating hairspring to the function of a watch or clock, it is worth taking the time to be something of a perfectionist as you do the work. If it ain't right, even if it works, there's no way it will stay in beat. As for the picks, it occurs to me that reshaping a set of dental picks would be easy enough and give a nice, touch working surface.
Fantastic work!
His voice is reassuring and tends to calm one down, which would seem to be necessary for this sort of work.
very nice stuff, many tools,,
i worked wit big lathes but those small ones are interesting hope can find a cheao one just for a hobby

What an explanation and guide. Came across this as I have a hairspring to adjust. Thank you 🙏 Also how can we make these kind of hairspring adjustment tools that you mentioned in the beginning?
What chemicals do you use to wash your hair when you're done? thank you
3:04 that horn startled me haha
Wow. I just did my first disassemble and reassemble of a movement. I had trouble with the balance and messed up the hairspring, even though everything else went perfectly. I attempted to correct the hairspring under a microscope, but made it worse. This information is valuable, and I'll keep it all and attempt it again using this video as the hairspring is not near as bad as the one you awesomely corrected at the end. Thanks!
Hi Sir There is much to learn from you. I like it a lot
Molto bravo , tutti i passaggi con molta esperienza e professionalità ❤
enjoy watching your repair video
Thank you very much for your video, as a young watch repairer I've been struggling with tangled and bent hairsprings, from now on I'll try your techniques and apply them on my routine.
Maybe the best approach I have ever seen to working through HS issues !! Thanks !!
Parabéns, esse foi sem dúvida o melhor tutorial do YT que já vi sobre esse conteúdo. Estava Procurando há muito tempo..
Thanks for this excellent tuto
Excellent video and amazing skills! What kind of graver do you use. It cuts like butter! What is the best material to make screws and stems?
Ha! Not a fool at all! Very inspiring
Making a drill bit would be cool.
Listening on 2x speed is still slow.
Thank you , this has helped in my understanding of lock jewel pivot movements. 🙏
Thanks Boss 🤝
Very instructive. What I do not get is what movement you make with your tweezers correcting an out of flat hairspring. Are you twisting the spring? Something else? I would be very happy if you would take the time to explain me.
Yes, I noticed the same, would certainly love to know a bit more.
Very informative and very helpful. 🕐⚙️🍸
