What does the word "Braunstein" mean and why is it important that we use it?
After a recent twitter controversy involving the use of the word "Braunstein" to describe a diplomacy-style war game, here is why I think it is important that we use the correct words to describe this type of game.
For more info about Braunstein games, you should watch Secrets of Blackmoor or listen to the multitude of people who have been talking about this concept including @dundermoose , @Scutifer_Mike , and@NightDangerRPG

Allowing Players to Fail: Why the Final Fantasy TTRPG Gets Player Failure Wrong

None of this really disproves that he was "sexist", just looking at the forum post is enough to make it very clear he was sexist. But sexism comes in many different forms and certainly some people attribute types of sexism to him that he wasn't engaging in as far as I know. I don't think that Gary was actively trying to keep women out of the hobby, though I think it's undeniable that he made very little effort to actually include women either.

Many, many years ago I worked at a juvenile detention facility in Florida. I'd run D&D (and other rpgs) for the girls and sometimes bring in pool noodles to do boffer battle games with (just the noodle, nothing to make it a boffer weapon like we used in ghetto larps around florida). It was a really great tool to teach them team work, critical thinking, empathy AND it was something I could use as a consequence for behavour. "if you don't start making better choices, I'm not going to be able to come in and run the game for you"

I gm'd for 30+ years. I can count on one hand the amount of players i ever killed. What is this where pcs get killed by dice rolls? Afaic this is not a thing. The risk of death should be there to make it exciting and everyone knew you could die. But...bad rolls never killed anyone. Just bad decisions, narrative necessity, and bad play did.

Much respect for you not focusing on his crimes. We often forget the humanity that prisoners have beyond their crimes. Whatever he did in the past, all you can hope for is that he's atoned and is ready to make the world a better place -- which I'm sure he already is doing by creating spaces for people to express their creative and nerdy sides. Also very interesting how he said that his DnD experiences had people from multiple races playing together. You often hear about how prison guards purposely stir ethnic tensions in prisons to keep people divided and to minimize chances of prisoners organizing and empathizing with one another across identity lines. Pretty great to see how this is one of the few avenues that can allow these tensions to break :)

I played DnD while incarcerated. If there's one thing I can say about it, it all gave us something to look forward to. Helped us be creative and bond with one another. I drew all my maps by hand with a stencil. I used colored pencils and my friend made dice out of soap or woodglue and carboard. Hell, we even started play 1/4 scale warhammer 40,000, i even have pictures somewhere of me holding up a board to a camera. I feel terrible about all my friends still back there. One of the saddest things I remember is hearing their stories and most of the time they would never be able to move on from it. I would get extremely angry to learn of those cops taking this away from them. I think the justice system should decide whether to just kill us all or to give us a chance at life. They seem to want to do neither.

I love how you touch on the pick me girl nonsense while sticking to the brass tacks. What women don't understand is that men are VERY independent creatures and that means we don't give two craps about what others think about us. This also means we lose great amounts of respect for those that only go with the flow socially. We believe that you should do what YOU want to do not what society thinks is cool. This is why girls who get into gaming in eras where it isn't cool tend not to be these weird types that want the game to change to appeal to them, it already did appeal to them.

KEITH RUN! SHE PLAYS A NECROMANCER! SHE WANTS YOUR SOUL! Joking aside though this is why people don't like the current moral panic. It's the same crap they've been going through since the mid 70's. When a game developer or some talking head comes along saying video games cause white supremacy it's the same thing as when they claimed they cause people to harm others. This isn't our first rodeo and we are tired of it. Especially when these games tabletop or electronic can help so many people. I will never understand why so many people hate it when others are happy to the point they try to ruin entertainment. Especially entertainment that can build skills.

Ok, to be perfectly honest, I don't really know the "Braunstein" drama, but as someone who studied philology, I can say that's not how languages work. You can't moderate and own words that enter the everyday/colloquial language. Otherwise, we wouldn't have words like hoover or band-aid. Language is a living beast and it cannot be tamed. Edit: Typos.

I always let my players fail and make mistakes. I always get “Reeeee mUh aGeNcY” “hOsTiLe DM!!!” “rAiLrOaDiNg!!” (Of course failing to realize that letting them fail is literally the opposite of not giving player agency and railroading.) I just find new players. So many people want to play, so few willing to run games let alone prefer it. I have the power.

10:07 D&D is probably one of the earliest successful examples of the many great franchises spawning out of JRR Tolkien "inventing" the blueprints for modern fantasy via The Lord of the Rings and it's related fiction, and the man himself did indeed look like your "stereotypical" English proffessor wearing tweed and smoking a pipe, but he was also a veteran of one of the most brutal instances of trench warfare in WW1, the Battle of the Somme as well as being both a conservative Roman Catholic and a nature-loving environmentalist ahead of his time all at once. So yes, there is indeed no standard "look" or "personality" to those who follow in his footsteps of loving the creative art of storytelling, from novels to table top to fully realized three-dimensional worlds inside a computer program. Here's a fitting quote by the man himself about jails and escapism: “I have claimed that Escape is one of the main functions of fairy-stories, and since I do not disapprove of them, it is plain that I do not accept the tone of scorn or pity with which 'Escape' is now so often used. Why should a man be scorned if, finding himself in prison, he tries to get out and go home? Or if he cannot do so, he thinks and talks about other topics than jailers and prison-walls?”

The roll-on deodorant that indigent inmates receive, is the best thing you can use for dice. Once it's empty, you stomp on it to Pop the ball out of the end, and then you can use the floor or any rough surface to flatten out however many sides you want to make six-sided, a decahedron, pyramid, or whatever shape dice you prefer. Then you can use a razor to cut out the numbers on each side (or dots if its 6 sided dice), and then use dirt or ash to fill in the numbers so they can be seen better.

I absolutely adore this video when I was in lockup a lot of people you never would have thought would have interests and D&D gave it a go. There's something powerful with escapism to a fantasy realm when you are incarcerated. Roleplay manuals where the first thing I asked for from my friends when I got locked up, then the obvious dirty mags and the newspaper 😅

0:01 No they didn’t like it because it has maps in it, they think it could be used to plan an escape attempt. Also playing D&D in prison is not a good idea. A lot of people think of it as a kids game, so people might think you’re in there for crimes involving being inappropriate with children. Which is not something you want any confusion, or misunderstandings about.
