    I've kept a series of Pumpkinseeds in my 90 gal out in my shop. I catch them in my small creek in NW WA state. They share the tank with other Pumpkins and an occasional cuttthroat trout, as well as a crayfish. I've found the small ones will eat dried bloodworms from the pet store and the adults like the Hikari brand top feeding predator pellets, though they will also happily eat goldfish. I keep my tank just above 60 F so I can have some algae eating snails to help with tank cleaning. Everything in the tank except the snails came from my creek; rocks logs, etc. I really enjoy having a mini version of my creek indoors and I like being able to show friends a slice of what lives in my creek.

    Your chunks of brick aren’t providing the smooth eddy currents trout need to hang out behind. They need laminar flow, not a washing machine. Also, you don’t have enough oxygen. They are tiny now, but they’ll be “mouthing” once they double in size.

      I will tell you right now these things are the biggest pieces of shit 😂 HOWEVER... I love the giant Bowl and that alone was worth it. The protein skimmer never worked and the filter pump crapped out right away, and it scratches super easily so just be careful when moving it around and cleaning it.

    It always amazes me how cichlid-like the sunfishes are, even though they’re not closely related (convergent evolution). I’ve kept bluegill, green sunfish, and spotted sunfish, and they’re all so fascinating and beautiful. It’s a bit like having cool water cichlids, which to me makes them really interesting. They don’t get nearly enough attention, so thank you for covering this!

    • @unorthodoxaquatics

      Indeed, I'd actually like to experiment with the seeds and cichlids, I might once my juvie convicts are bigger, probably with some seeds I'll trap this spring.

    • @PlainsPup

      @@unorthodoxaquatics I was taught not to mix cichlids and centrarchids, and I think that’s generally a good idea. They’re similar enough to get into conflict, but different enough to misunderstand each other’s signals. Plus there’s the issue of different temperature requirements (temperate vs tropical). I think it’s usually better to enjoy them separately.

  • @DarrylMcCullough

    Two years ago a coworker gave me a bunch of free fish. A few cichlids, a large pleco and this tiny spotted catfish. I was so busy looking at the other fish. I totally forgot about the tiny catfish. I figured he’d get eaten up anyway. Today while cleaning my tank I saw this black tail and I thought “what the world is that?” So surprised the tiny spotted catfish lived and now I know its name. The Raphael spotted catfish! Thank you!

    I think it’s worth mentioning to anyone, watching this video that the bottom of this aquarium is made of plastic, which isn’t typical for aquariums in this price range, and his honestly lower quality than a glass bottom.

    • @unorthodoxaquatics

      True, but I also love that it's a miniature bow front. I also convert terrariums by shimming them from the bottom and bracing the middle. Modern terrariums have thick glass and black silicone which I also love

      Yep they'll get ya! All legit cats have them in the pectoral and dorsal fins. Baby bullheads are bad too. Small cats haven't learned how to control the release of venom so their stings are super painful. It may be a good idea to get a small rubberized net and just keep it handy if you keep many cats 🙃

  • @DavidJHarrisonEssex

    Hello from 🇬🇧 . You asked if anyone has one bigger than 4 or 5 inches, i can assure you I do!!!! But enough about me & my privates. 😂 I put 2 of these in my dwarf cichlid aquarium & they kept chasing my other cichlids, usually I'd have taken them back to my LFS but I like them too much so I moved them to an aquarium on their own, I assume they were breediimg then as they are now & protecting their young. I've seen some fry but not seen any grow, I've not looked in the cave. I hope they are in there. If i do get any that grow, I will put pne back with my other Dwarfs as I want at least one of these in there because they are one of my favourites & they have a lovely colour. What are they like as parents? Do they eat their fry or look after them? Thanks.

    • @unorthodoxaquatics

      What do you mean by dwarf cichlids?

    • @DavidJHarrisonEssex

      @unorthodoxaquatics I thought you'd know the term Dwarf Cichlid. A certain type of Cichlid that doesn't grow more than 4 inches, although there are done that don't grow more than that that are not classed as Dwarf Cichlids.

    • @unorthodoxaquatics

      Yes lol I'm aware of what they are, but do you mean other American cichlids? Some people call these and polar blue cichlids dwarf because they are smaller than typical parrots but they aren't even parrots at all. It doesn't really matter though if you left the fry alone in the tank with other fish but no parents, they're way long gone by now.

    • @DavidJHarrisonEssex

      @unorthodoxaquatics I stated I moved them to an aquarium on their own, they kept breeding.

    • @unorthodoxaquatics

      Oh, my apologies! I'm not sure which dwarves you have, but calmer ones will go after them if spotted, not to mention any fish that gets the urge to bite at something moving like possible food. I'm estimating the chances are slim unfortunately... Is the possibility unlikely? Yeah, but certainly not impossible. If they were only within a few days of separation they most likely would have expired due to lack of holding/spitting that helps them regulate their swim bladders when so young. Let me know how it turns out!!
