E39 M5 Track car project taking laps with GVC BMW CCA HPDE at Watkins Glen
Breaking in the new differential with 3.62 gear ratio, 3 clutch LSD and 30/60 ramps. Running off my pace from last event. The changes took longer than expected to get used to.

Finally have the car running well and just in time for Watkins Glen HPDE with Genesee Valley Chapter of the BMW CCA. Started the weekend feeling out the car and then making some adjustments to the dampers. Early on, I started turning 2:19.x laps, which bested my previous PB at WGI with the "full weight" old car of 2:20.x. Once I dialed in the dampers more, the car felt more natural and the time...
E39 M5 track car project throttle cut issue RESOLVED!

DME program mismatch caused the issues. Ignore the "warm up" lights on the tach in the running video at the end. The oil level/temp sensor is not working correctly.
E39 M5 track car build throttle cut issue retest
มุมมอง 6K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
More testing. The full throttle cut has disappeared and now just breaking up. Theorizing water and varnish still in the fuel from the tank before I bought it. I siphoned out the pump side before installing the new pump, but the tank is a "saddle" design with a siphon pump between sides. I didn't clear that side. ISO HEET fuel additive has been put in the tank in hopes of continuing to clear the...
E39 M5 track build throttle cut testing part 2

Finally had a chance to run video while having INPA connected. I monitored HLM requirement, injection time, throttle angle and pedal pot. It looks like the injectors are turning off and both throttle sensors are showing WOT. I can still lightly press down to full throttle without it cutting out.

WARNING. This is not an instructional video or direct "how to". Do not rely on my video to time your engine! Follow BMW TIS and use supplemental sources such as M5board DIY's. If you're not sure of any part of this job, get it clarified before proceeding. Good luck and enjoy the tour of the inside of the S62.
S62 THROTTLE ACTUATOR TESTING with DIS v44
มุมมอง 875 หลายเดือนก่อน
Running tests with DIS/GT1 to check the function of the throttle actuator on this BMW S62 in the M5 track car. I'm experiencing a load based or possibly throttle position based "cut" while driving. The engine falls flat on it's face when this happens. Video of that will be forthcoming.
Track car build on track at PittRace with GVC
มุมมอง 2485 หลายเดือนก่อน
The track car project makes it on track! This clip is mostly just to show the car on track but also to analyze the "cutout" issue I encountered after getting the car running last week. By the time I recorded this session, I had figured out how to mostly drive around the problem by being real gentle with throttle application. You can still hear it happen a few times in this video though.

E39 M5 track car build Part 3
มุมมอง 2096 หลายเดือนก่อน
Made some progress in the last 3 weeks. I left a few things out of the video, like removing the A pillar curtain airbags. What a PITA! the upper dash and headliner need to come partly out in order to change these. I wouldn't wish that on anyone! I also forgot to mention the faulty ECS mid brake line. That's why one line isn't connected.

Great video thank yoh
Whoops! lol well handled.
Thanks Bill!
That was exciting. Glad it ended well
where is the temperature sensor from the electric fan located..
In the radiator
I have a e39 with a built turbo s52 I'm from lake George n.y. (I have a few videos on my "Drew Davis" channel/ s52 e39 turbo) your corner fog light holes actually see low pressure , it's kinda not intuitive. That said my oil cooler is on the driver's side behind the fog ,and works great when the fan is on. The biggest help is the under tray that is the front half of the engine/ front splitter. If that's not there the air loads up under the hood. I actually put a e46 m3 hood vent on my hood to let the turbo heat out. (Top mount)
I always wondered if you had fluid come out of the power steering with the recirculating ball set up vs. My rack
Thanks for the reply! I added screens with a fibrous material behind them to dissipate water. Low pressure or not, tire rubber snakes could still get in there if left open. There are some dents in the screens after this past weekend at The Glen.
Great project mate!
Thanks!
That's quite a point-by. Maybe he was damaged.
I think he was on a cool down lap or taking it easy.
Nicely done! I thought some of the skid marks on the track looked familiar, especially the one going straight off at T8. I was at that event with my MINI Cooper. Had a grand time, even with the rain. Did you try working with any of the data coaches GVC provides? They help me pull a few tenths out of my time through the Toe; that turn is so miserable in a FWD car… Ugh!
Hey, thanks! I've worked with Henry in the past. He's what led me to get my own AIM SOLO DL. I didn't work with him that weekend since it was the first weekend running the car at full power. I've learned from him what to look for in the data traces too, so I'm mostly self analyzing for now.
I should have added that I like your line around the track, except I take a different line in the toe (see below). What run group are you in? And what tires are you running? What camera? I was working with Henry at this event. I’m am still coming up to speed with what to look for in the data, so I’m relying on him and Greg V for help. A difficulty with my car, which is stock, is that it is FWD with eDLC (MINI’s version of electronic LSD), but unlike RWD cars it works on the front wheels, which is really hampering in turns like the Toe. So, there seems to be some limitation between what they think I should be doing and what the car can do. Hence, I need to do a different line through the Toe than your line. Overall, though, I love the learning process.
Thanks. I run in Group 1. The tires are Continental Extreme Contact Force. The camera is the Sporty Cam 3 which pairs with the AIM. I've been running with GVC for 3 years or so now and also enjoy the learning process. Never stop learning!
Same here, Group 1, in the Black JCW MINI Cooper. Hope I didn’t hold you up at all…
@@Eddie07S awesome. And I doubt you held me up! Even if so, that stuff doesn't bother me unless someone isn't paying attention for longer than one pass opportunity. Are you a GVC member or from a different area? Either way, are you coming in September?
What did you use to clean the parts up that good?
The aluminum was pretty "clean" from the start, so it made it easy to clean up. Just degreasing with mineral spirits mostly.
Getting ready to go through the exact same process. Where do you get the DIS/GT1 software for testing VANOS?
I've had the software since 2010-ish on that laptop. Not sure where specifically you would get it from these days, but it's out there!
Thank you for the detailed video!
You're welcome!
I love the sound!!
Thanks Greg! See you this weekend?

Who was able to diagnose this base map vs other throttle map for you?
I don't know which specific maps had the issue or if it was the file versions having a mismatch. For example, 1601 base file versus 1701. I know the EWS deleted file with the tune on it was created from a 1701 base file. I determined the issue by matching the tune file back to the DME it originated from. This way I knew the base files would match. Since then, the only actual help I got was from a friend to get a stock/factory full 512kb file loaded onto the DME I intend to keep in the car moving forward. Now I have a known good 1701 factory file from which to have a custom dyno tune worked up. That likely won't be until the fall. I'm still waiting on some specialty parts. For now I still have the tuned DME from my other M5 bolted into this car.
😢
Following along on the build, can't wait to see the outcome! I also have an E39 M5 with 300k+ miles, jealous of the Avus Blue though!
Thanks! Congrats on being in the 300k club. Avus is certainly a great color. What color is yours?
@technician1177 Titanium Silver unfortunately
My respect my friend! This looks super hard to do job specially without a lift. You gained a follower. Thanks for sharing
Sorry I missed your comment! Thank you.
Very cool to see another M5 track build. There are only a few of us out there. ❤ love it. It’s so much fun on track when you make it lighter. Mine is just over 3300 lbs with an 8 point cage.
I'd love to pick your brain about the cage when the time comes!
@@technician1177 For sure!
Nice save!
Thanks!
Is this just the axle back muffler only? No mid pipe, etc
That car had Evolve headers, hi flow cats and supersprint x-pipe (non resonated).
If there are a gaggle of cars rail roading you, the BEST thing to do is remain predictable (read; hold your line, regardless of if its on the "preferred" line). That is the one of the first things they teach/drill into you day one for any HPDE (atleast all the ones I am part of). Driver's behind should be paying attention and looking several corners ahead. It seems more along the lines of him experiencing a mechanical issue at that moment. No telling what it was or if he had a moment and had to gather it up. Did you go over to chat with him after to see what's up?? Alot of these question could have probably been answered with a quick stop in to check how he was doing
Thanks for the comment! The video is meant to be educational - my vision could have been better. By that I mostly mean with recognizing the traffic in front of me making the quick maneuvers wasn't for "normal" passing on the back straight but rather quick passing for a large speed differential. I agree that at the time our group came up on him it was too late for him to pull off into the safe barrier/track exit (or do anything other than stay on-line until a safe point is reached). He should have exited on the one before going down the straight. He couldn't have been going more than 50 mph in the fastest section of the track. On my next lap around, he was parked in the grass by the flagging station at the end of the back straight. It was a mechanical issue.

What was your torque procedure on the bolts? 5nm - 20 nm - 65 deg? Did you also use plasti-gauge to check tolerance?
I did follow TIS here as you described. I usually just hand tighten with a rachet for the 5nm setting, then torque wrench the rest. In the first video I described the use of plastigauge but didn't video actually doing it. I checked only a couple rods as the wear was consistent and I didn't have any symptoms/problems to diagnose. Good luck on yours!
We need more honest owners to post videos like this. This would dispel the vicious rumors about the rod bearing issue surrounding these cars.
Thanks for making this video. Can't wait to see the next part. I'm planning on tackling this job very soon as well.
Thanks! Part 2 is posted. It came out as a TH-cam Short.
Just eat all the curb going into the bus stop! =D
Haha. Yeah, partial curb is fine but the car gets too upset with the high turtles.
That's nice to see. Not the same as the E60 M5 sadly. It was the last good M5 the E39.
Yeeessss sir!
