Tip to Audition fabric for Villa Rosa Pumpkin Spice Table Runner
Choosing fabric for quilt blocks are one of the difficult aspects of beginning a project. Laying-out fabric before cutting can give an idea of how the final block will look. This video simply shows how to audition fabric for a pumpkin block and the results of how the finished runner looks.

String block (HST) using 1" to 2 1/2" strips, tapered strips of fabric, or leftover strip sets
มุมมอง 1.3K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
Take strips of leftover fabric, sew together by stabilizing on a paper foundation and create "new" fabric. Fabric which would otherwise be thrown away gains new life in this beginner-level block. Bonnie Hunter (www.quiltville.com) is credited for much of the information in this video. The basic technique, however, is as old as scraps themselves. The idea of sewing "green" can be summed up in th...
Scrap Management 2
มุมมอง 2.6K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
To experienced quilters, it may seem odd to explain how we accumulate scraps. New quilters may not realize some of us keep ALL the leftover fabric from our projects, our friends' projects, and even BUY grab bags at the Quilt Shop or find some at rummage sales. A newbie could have learned from someone who throws-away leftover project materials. (It is a little embarrassing, but I admit to pullin...

Scrap Management 1

Using a slotted ruler as the main tool, I show beginning steps to cut scrap fabric into usable-size strips. Any slotted cutting ruler, like June Taylor or the Stripology XL by GE Designs, work nicely. There are many patterns for using Jelly Rolls (trademark name for 2 1/2" strips) and Honey Buns (trademark for 1 1/2" strips), so those are good choices for a starting point. Also shown are a coup...
Half-square triangles Part Two_specialty ruler
มุมมอง 737 หลายเดือนก่อน
Featuring up-close detail, I demonstrate using the Omnigrid 96L ruler to cut half-square triangles from 2 1/2 inch fabric strips. The advantage is that HST and squares or rectangles can be cut from the same size strip, no need to cut 2 7/8" squares, then cut diagonally to made HSTs. Bonnie Hunter's "fast2cut Essential Triangle ruler" and Creative Grids' "CGRT45 ruler" are used similarly. How to...

Hand-pieced and appliqued, this top was given to me by a friend after being found and purchased at a rummage sale in South Dakota. Use caution with this HST method!
มุมมอง 529 หลายเดือนก่อน
Especially beginner quilt makers should be aware of a pitfall of this popular method of making 4-at-a-time HST (half-square triangles). The stable threads of woven fabric are lengthwise and crosswise threads, perpendicular to one another. True bias is the 45 degree angle. The bias has a stretchy quality and must be handled with care to prevent cut pieces from becoming deformed. This method cuts...

Thank you for saying, "Thank you." If it helps someone along the way, I am happy.
❤
Thank you.
Love the decals on your machine!
I love that machine! It's called "The Free" made in Rockford, Illinois. Art deco-style peacocks and leaves are the decals. Thank you for noticing!
PPS…use this ruler to pre miter your bing strips for perfect joins and for snowballed blocks.
PS for those tempted to skip the final trim….These angular blocks depend on perfect distribution of each fabric in the point. Nearly impossible for mere mortals to achieve with biased blocks absent precision trimming.
A triangle ruler is a must have. I have this ruler but prefer my CG Folded Corner Clipper. Here’s a tip for cutting quickly. Cut rectangles. The width of your rectangle is your strip size + .75”. (That is the 3/8” seam top for the 1/4” seam allowance x 2 for both units). A 2.5” strip would be cut at 3.25” subcuts. Align ruler once and have two perfect mirrors. Use the obverse and cut the width (3.25) and use your Stripology ruler to make the 2.5” cuts. This method works for the shoulders of triangle in square blocks and cutting units for half rectangles. It saves tons of time and eliminates ruler rotate with no loss in accuracy. Give it a spin!
I will try it. Thanks!
I am a glue baster which helps me phase my work. I don’t like pins and take finger pinning over pins but glue is my preference.
I see and applaud your seam rotation on your 4 patch. I hope your beginners note this and see how effective it is for a flat seam. Great demonstration of best practices.
Thank you for such a kind comment! You have been such an encouragement. Even though I've been doing this hobby for 30+ years, I still feel I have lots to learn. I hope what I CAN teach will help someone improve their sewing technique for a better finished product.
@@kabjhill I’m a newbie. I’m in my 5th year. I have focused my learning on finding and testing techniques and adopting and promoting them as best practices. TH-cam is a bounty for learning how to quilt ~from quilters like you~and sharing bits I’ve found that aren’t oft seen.
Worth noting….if you like to iron press v finger, use a pressing aid as the ink will transfer to usu iron.
Great point! Thank you.
I have my grandmother’s treadle. It is my makeup table. I do have a new leather belt for the treadle wheel. One day I will get it going. I have more interests than time.
I don't use my treadle often, but it does something to calm my soul, maybe that connection to history and family. At least you are making use of yours in some way and are prepared to use it in another way some day.
While it might be a no no but, frequently employed in garment sewing, I sometimes clip a seam (to not through) to do a partial seam push. I rarely press open, but sometimes unavoidable even with a partial . I like nesting seams. Beautiful quilt. Try taking a picture of your layout. Sometimes our eye can spy an error on the screen better than over a larger area. Of course there is the turnabout from layout to machine. Love your vids…keep them coming.
Thank you. That is a good tip. And, yes, I think I flipped a block from layout to machine. I never need to purposely insert a humility block. All my quilts have some without me even trying.😁
@@kabjhill "Shift happens!"
Off kilter pattern cuts drive my eye yes nuts. And r placing patterns helter skelter in a block where they jar the eye. A little care here and later makes all the difference.
Love your comment!
Close your cutter please
I usually keep my thumb on the " trigger" and close before setting it down! I guess with my focus on recording and explaining, it was just too many things to remember at one time for my little brain!
If your cutter is out of the way or placed in a tray it can cause no harm.
Good advice!
So nice to hear. Thank you!
What do you do with the paper once you’ve sold in the fabric on it? Do you leave it on or do you peel it off?
I'll show in the next video, but I DO peel it off. It must be done carefully because the edges of the square will generally be on the bias of the strips (unless bias strips are used, then edges will be on the straight-of-grain.) Hope that helps.
Wow I love it!!!!❤❤
Thank you! I hope to create more projects you'll love!
It concerns me with the bias edges on the outside! The videos I’ve seen show the quilter nit having a problem - would a good starching of the fabric help if someone wanted to try this method?
A thorough application of starch should help. Starch before cutting into squares. Then, don't steam press seams. That will void the stiffness and stability gained from starching. Good luck! Thank you for commenting.
Lovely n thanks. Love yr fabric choices…..😊
Thank you for watching!
Nice video.i just bought a stripology ruler and I saw your video and subscribed. I have a bucket full of scraps to go through. Very timely.
Please look for the GE quilt design channel on TH-cam and watch the Stripology 101 video series. This will help you to get the most out of your ruler. Biggest first tip is: hold rotary cutter slightly sideways to enter the teardrop part of the slot. Do not push forward, though, until you then hold cutter perpendicular to the slot. I learned the hard way and chipped my ruler and dulled the blade on the first use! Thank you for your comment!
Good organizing system. Your ruler is a great help! I’m looking forward to see your projects. Thank you for sharing.
You are going to love using that ruler. An MVP TOOL in the sewing room.
I process my scraps very similar, except I don't have the stripology ruler.. yet. I have it on my list to get. I see a Baumans orchard box. You must be in my neck of the woods! Hello neighbor
@@tammymosher3668 Good eye! We found that orchard on the way through the area. Their white peaches are our favorite! I wish I lived closer, but this North Dakotan will still be proud to call you Neighbor! Thanks so much for the comment, brings back great memories.
Keep the videos coming! You always have good advice to share!
Thank you so much!
Thank you for sharing your process. ❤
As a beginner, I struggled with what or how to save scraps. I just hope this may help someone who also saves leftovers. Thanks so much for your comment!
Amazingly beautiful!!!
Thank you so much! With a little twist or turn, simple blocks can surprise us.
Beautiful quilt. No one will ever see a mistake even if you do have one. Love it!
Thank you for your heartfelt comment.
Great video. I really liked the idea of using a book instead of a clapper.
So glad to see that you're part of my on-line community! Clapper or book-- they just help fabric cool while keeping flat. (I think that's the trick!)
Really nice. Gotta sub to see more😊
I'm willing to make more videos when I know people are interested! Thanks for your comment.
It turned out very pretty. Good job!
Thank you. Have a wonderful day!
Thank you for making this quilt, I have now decided to make my own with my left over fabric. 😊
It will take awhile to construct all the blocks, but it's a good project for using scraps. Thank you for commenting. Have a super day and good luck with your scrap projects!
Wow. I think that this is one of the most beautiful quilts that I have ever seen. Love the colours. Great job 😊
Oh! Thank you SO much for your kind comment. Have a great day!
Absolutely gorgeous!!!!
Thank you!
WOW! I have that quilt design software but have never actually used it...Did you use it? Or, did you just hand color a graph paper? This quilt has me in awe, especially as you lay it out! IT IS GORGEOUS and I have been quilting about 50 years, so I hope you can see how much I like this! Your blue colors just POP off the background. AND IT IS SO BIG!
I have wanted Electric Quilt since "EQ 3." Two years ago I purchased EQ 8. There are so many helpful tutorials that the company has on TH-cam. Use those to get started and play with it everyday to get the hang of it. Yes, I did use the program to manipulate the block. Still, it took time and many versions to get "the One." I'm sewing the rows of the quilt right now--hoping to show the assembled top in a couple days. Thank you so much for your comment.
This is so amazing to me! I am in awe and I love it!!!
(It's amazing to ME that this video struck a chord with so many people.) I'm so glad that you love it!
A very beautiful quilt top! I´m inspired! greetings from Holland!
How cool is it that we can share this love of quilting across the world?! Thank you for your comment.
Loved the time lapse! Your scrappy color choices are beautiful and the bows in the corners--wow! Look forward to seeing it finished. You're very talented with your stiletto/seam ripper. I would have run over the tip with my machine needle many times. 🤣
Thank you for the comment and compliments. Now, to tell the truth, just last week I DID break a needle for the first time on the stiletto! Usually I forget I changed to the straight-stitch needle plate and move my needle position over --that's how I break the most needles.
That's beautiful! Thank you!
Thank you for your compliment.
I love the boards you have. I'm gonna make some.
They are so helpful. I use them all the time. I just cut foam core board to desired size, hot-glue leftover batting, and trimmed with my Grandma's leftover bias tape to make it pretty. (I hot glued that--what a pain.) Thanks for the comment and like.
@@kabjhill thankyou
@@kabjhill I like the size of your boards for holding your 9 patches too! I thought I'd share an idea instead of using hot glue the next time you make some (not sure who's video I watched for the idea). I cut thin strips of permanent heat & bond (red package) and used my Clover mini iron to press down my binding/bias tape edges together. Worked great!
@@jennystrahley927 Thanks for the tips. I'm going to try it next time!
Your quilt is incredibly beautiful! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much.
A very nice job. The front and back is very pretty. You complimented it nicely with your designs. Nicely saved 😊
Thank you. I practiced quilting; the top is saved from further raveling on the edges; it can be displayed & enjoyed. "Win" all around.
What drew me to this video is the center, it looks like it would be a beautiful wall hanging. The quilt is stunning. I know it’s a struggle for some parts, I admire your effort!! 🎉❤
Thank you for the comment and encouragement.
By all means, make some blocks and just twist and turn them to get the desired wall hanging layout. You can do it!
WOW!!!
That is amazing!
Wow! It’s amazing how you figured out that pattern! It’s beautiful! Good Luck working out the “problems” of the outer border. I know you will, if you can make that pattern, I know you will figure out the issue.Again It’s absolutely beautiful!
Thank you so much for your kind words! I really appreciate the encouragement.
I have to tell you I did not hit subscribe until I saw your quilt layout. I was very impressed.
Good to know. Now I'll have to stretch my creative muscles to keep the interest. Like most quilters, I have my "go-to" layouts, but I'll try to keep you guessing with what's next.
I see the bow and if you really, really use your expanded imagination you can see a butterflyish critter. Nice work.
I'll see what I can come up with when quilting to see how I can enhance one shape or another. If I wanted to applique antennae, that would help but I just want to be done! (So that's not happening!)
Truly spectacular gírl
Ohh! Thank you so much.
Lovely way to use up small pieces of fabric. I love how precise you are.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video.
I really like what the full square in the centre of the block does to the pattern. It’s a very pretty quilt.
Thank you for the compliment.
That is gorgeous, Those bows look like a butterfly too!
Now I'm going to be twisting and turning those blocks to see if I can enhance that. Thanks for the comment.
