You Can't Make a Sequel to Breath of the Wild - A Tears of the Kingdom Critique
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is an action-adventure video game published and developed by Nintendo in 2023, releasing over 6 years after The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Many tout Tears of the Kingdom (TotK) as a "sequel" to 2017's Breath of the Wild (BotW), but this is, in my opinion, completely false. Tears of the Kingdom is not a sequel to Breath of the Wild, merely a flawed recreation of BotW's design. In this Tears of the Kingdom analysis/critique/retrospective/whatever-word-works-for-you, I'll discuss how The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom fails at being a sequel through its mirroring and repetition of Breath of the Wild.

Blegh. 28 minutes in and this is just… not it. :/ Like genuinely why wouldn’t you just make a video about any number of games you used as a good example in the intro instead of wasting 2 hours explaining why a game is erm actually bad. Not one of those games are a sequel either… which is a pretty unfair comparison to make. Like. You talked about portal. Yet I’ve heard portal 2 isn’t as good as the first. So why compare the first game in a franchise to the second in a franchise…?

Its a very good game, with a very simplistic and basic story(some depth can be found if you discover the tears). i dont get the criticism, you are actually complaining that a game gives you the freedom to create and solve puzzles in various ways, maybe you should stick to call of duty. Its all about the journey, the gameplay, the plot doesnt really matter in Zelda games.

1:03:00 one could argue that breath of the wilds memory sequences are primarily to learn about 2 characters. Zelda, and Link. Link though does also have the quest log. Which in the Japanese version is written from his perspective as a sort of journal. Though even then that’s post memory loss link, is link the same character pre and post memory loss?

One of the most common tropes in media is...... unpredictable? Fiora was telegraphed to die from the first introduction. You even point that out. I'm not trying to knock the game, I quite enjoyed it, but your comments here make no sense. If you had said (and maybe you do eventually) that Fiora coming back was unpredictable that would be a good statement. Although that too was telegraphed, even if I was a little slow on the up tick and didn't see it right away. Fridge characters aren't really that interesting. And Fiora is a terribly written character with no agency outside of wanting to service Shulk. It was disappointing when she came back and didn't grow as a character at all. But the rest of the cast is fantastic and all grow as characters.

Once again I wish totk had link go back in time with Zelda. If they did away with the depths entirely, and instead focused on changing the world to be one changed an untold number of years in the past, the world would be the same but different. My personal idea is that the story would be more linear, and the past would contain 4 dungeons with key landmarks being changed. Between dungeons, story events and cutscenes would play out telling us the story of the rise of ganondorf. Some big events would occur where we get to experience the lore of the land, i.e. some box in botw mentions dueling peaks was split by a dragon, so maybe we could se that happen in game. After the first four, we should fight ganon and lose, so Zelda does her thing and in her last moments of lucidity sends link forward in time. Having failed, the sacrifice and loss will mean so much more. The second half would involve the current hyrule, but I spent less time thinking about that part

1:22:54 the Steward Constructs even make jokes! The Culinary Construct on the Great Sky Island made a food joke even though its sole purpose was to cook food it could never eat! The Ancient Sages might as well have just been a TV standing in the middle of this weird foggy room. "How is the TV even working-" "ssshhh Zonai magitech, don't question it" re: unpuzzling puzzles Kikakin Shrine (the one at 2:12:53) is pitch black inside, and a Light is provided to you when you walk in, and to get through this shrine safely, you need to carry this Light around. OR...you could light up the place by throwing brightbloom seeds everywhere, which you'd probably collected hundreds of at that point, thereby eliminating the need for the Light and turning the shrine into a big room with some chests in it. Like...why were those things allowed in there? It would've been kinda annoying, but what if every shrine were like the Proving Grounds shrines, only giving you certain materials to use inside and prohibiting use of outside materials AND status effects applied through cooking? I remember one shrine in BotW that involved navigating a floating platform between walls covered in spikes, and at the very start is a chest with a Korok Leaf inside; like that, but what's inside the chest is a Zonai device or a material that will help you complete the shrine. It might've helped to get rid of the tedious feeling and would have made completing ALL 152 shrines actually feel like an accomplishment (I just wish the reward for completing all the shrines was better, wtf is the Ancient Hero's Aspect supposed to BE??) It feels like 90% of TotK's development was devoted to getting the physics system and fusion mechanic working. Which, I get it, it's an absolutely amazing system and that it (or this game) runs at all on the Switch is technological magic. But with so much focus on those systems, everything else fell by the wayside. Not enough care was taken to make TotK's narrative feel like a continuation of BotW's narrative. At times TotK acknowledges events of BotW, like with The Turning Tide in Zora's Domain, but at other times it desperately wants to forget BotW ever happened, like by only referring to the now-vanished Divine Beasts as "a major crisis" or "the source of the disaster" (the ONLY Divine Beast to actually be referred to by name in TotK is Vah Medoh, by Laissa in Rito Village, who refers to the spire above the village as Vah Medoh's perch). The most disappointing aspect of TotK for me was the disjointed story and the confusing lore; the gameplay was fffffuuuuunnnnn enough, I guess, but after multiple playthroughs, the flaws are starting to show themselves in a big way (WHY DO I HAVE TO WATCH THE SAME CUTSCENE FOUR TIMES?? WHY ARE WE ALLOWED TO VIEW THE MEMORIES OUT OF ORDER AND SPOIL THE PLOT TWISTS SO EARLY?? WHY DO THE SAGES *RUN AWAY FROM ME* IN COMBAT??)

There should be no depths.. The game should progress to play between zelda and link. First half Zelda in ancient hyrule, full of zonai structures (like the depths) learning from ancient Sheikas how to defend herself, gathering sages, activating shrines for link, etc. Second part Link fixing the master sword and helping recent sages.... also if Link, Zelda and Ganon had parts of the triforce would explain why ganondorf was so strong against the sages, and after killing Ganon, Link could join dragon zelda and ask the triforce for her to come back to her human form. Fixed.

Man ppl cant give this game a break can they? Totk was one of the best open world games ever made, better than breath of the wild in every way. The real problem with these games is that they dont have traditional DUNGEONS. Once nintendo figures how to incorporate natural dungeons and temples instead of those shrines, they'll have the perfect zelda game......and give us another companion.

I see a lot of people coming out with these types of videos lately in regard to TOTK. And that's fine i love these videos and I understand the point of view. But to me Totk is just a better BOTW. Every issue i had with the Botw was fixed to some extent here. I feel the impact of the world is not as high because the sense of discovery for some is not as strong due to it being the same map. I get it. But BOTW, as much as i loved it, felt very empty at times. This game fixes that, the world is full of fun things to do everywhere. Exploration is still a treat here. The world feels more lived in, there are more towns, exsisting towns are more lively. Dungeons, while nowhere near zelda standards, are much improved from BOTW. Most areas in the world are remixed in terms of what you find in spots of the maps. The sidequest quality is greatly improved as well. I feel the overworld does feel pretty different. If someone hasnt played either of these games id tell them to play totk. There is no reason to play botw again in my mind. I get it not having the same impact and reusing the same map probably was a mistake, something i first guessed and still feel in hindsight. So to people who feel this way, that's fine. I just dont see it that way. Its story is fine. Not like botw had a good story either.

If you’re playing combat the same as BotW then you’re not making the most of everything new from TotK, typical BoTW combat was very defensive melee combat where you primarily look for flurry rush and you may revali’s gale into the air for arrow shots a few times and you might use urbosa’s fury a few times for crowd control but both are very limited (plus bombs don’t do much damage). In TotK link is much more of a distance and stealth demon with OP throwing items like dazzle fruit and puffshrooms, status projectiles from the eightfold long blade and easy airtime any time he wants with fused shields, melee is generally only needed to be used when the enemy is suffering from the status effect you just hurled at them and link rarely ever needs to use his shield other than when fighting enemies that can’t be status’d like lynels

Reaching a destination only to be blocked because you didn’t choose to let yourself be railroaded like a shitty D&D game. Being given an open world, and then being continually told you’re going the wrong way. It couldn’t be more antithetical to itself. The sequence breaking you explain for Zora's Domain is something Trails has always done well. You can find a treasure chest with items, then get a quest for them later and you get a unique conversation because you already have what he's looking for.
