HiveIQ Assembly
มุมมอง 2.8Kปีที่แล้ว
NOTE: Please do not use liguid nails as I did, rather use a waterproof silicone with an adhesive property!!!!! The HiveIQ is an Australian 3-story beehive made of a high-density Expanded Polystyrene (ESP) constructed to last a long time. The HiveIQ has one of the highest R-values of any hives today. The R-value is 6 times greater than the standard Langstroth hive which helps the bees remain hea...

Winter Feeding with Krabby Patties
มุมมอง 5146 ปีที่แล้ว
We at Woods Bee Co. believe that the best food for bees are provided by nature. However, there may be times when the beekeeper has to prove emergency feed for the colony. While sugar is a go to source of food, pollen should never be used in a large amount during the winter due to Nosema. But pollen used in a small amount provides a great amount of needed resources during the winter. Below are t...

It is only 9 ddf not 10 frame .?
Yes, the HiveIQ hold 9 standard langstroth frames.
How do you handle the requirement for a floor drain in a trailer?
No drain in the floor just old fashion mopping for us!
You don't paint the yellow plastic and metal?
The yellow plastic has UV protection and the metal lid has a paint coating. You can paint it if you would like, but you would need to lightly sand the outside so that the paint would adhere a little better to the plastic. The painted plastic would probably wear more in the area that you use your hive tool and touch and then require a little more TLC. We liked the yellow contrast and picked colors that we thought looked good with it and had fun with the colors!
@woodsbeeco.2624 I'm thinking the same thing. The yellow will look great with some navy blue, just like our AK flag.
@@northwindhomestead907 definitely!
Thank you! Much appreciated.
You are welcome!
Last year I overwintered in a DD Apimaye and this summer there is a booming colony in an Anel Deep+Med with a wood med on top.. The insulated boxes or a heavy wrap are always booming in early spring, a month ahead of wood boxes. I'm looking at options for insulated hives because I believe its the future in beekeeping. Most of my hives have a homemade shallow box with R-13 fiberglass, its amazing how much heat is retained in an insulated box on a cold morning.
I'm glad to see other beekeepers who are using insulation to help their bees thrive. We believe that is the key as well as healthy bes!
Question: if you have 10 honey frames and you uncap and extract, will the bees draw it out deeper if you only put 9 back in the box? Or will they simply refill them at the thinner depth? Thanks
The bees will build out the frames leaving the same amount of space betwwen ten or nine frames which means you get more honey with nine frames.
Dude, what are you doing to only get 3 years out of a wooden hive? Mine are all old enough to vote. Too much rain in WA?
You can get more than three years but it requires, repainting, some sanding and painting because, But sometimes the bottom of the boxes start to role up because of the moister causing the boxes to be unevening and the bees are exposed to the elements.
Jake Landis from Monroe Washington I bought 2 HiveIQ kits plus 2 more mediums from woods bee company and let me say these hives are the best I actually had to buy 2 more mediums to add to the hives as they both filled out the 2 mediums on each hive best hives I’ve ever used Each year I’m going to buy 2 more kits plus extra mediums to eventually get all my hives swapped over to HiveIQ boxes Thanks woods bee company for supplying these in Washington
Glad you like them! Victor from HiveIQ says that you can expect about 25-30% more honey production!
Thank you … I learned a lot.
We are in Queensland AU. We started coming out of summer with one HiveIQ box and just assembled the next two. The difference in bee health and resources is amazing. Yhis hive is still two boxes high and thriving in winter, whilst the timber hives are just ok. I recommend researching them further and getting obe to try just like us. You will buy more@
We agree! We just moved 48 hives over before winter and have another 40 on the way!
Al, thanks for that review. It's great. I plan on getting one soon. Question: is there space to lay a Formic strip between the bottom and middle hive bodies?
Sorry in the delay Lynn but not as good with keeping up with TH-cam yet Not really, but you do want air flow for this type of treatment, so you can actually put an extra box on to provide more ventilation therefore giving some space.
I’m in Canada bad winters for 5 months I use most poly hives up here
I know these would work great up there!
I’m happy to see a brother doing bee videos I’m from Canada
Excellent video. Thanks.
Any thoughts on the queen excluder and feeding sugar water? I watch all your videos, thanks!
I dont care for the Qx, it fits too tightly, great if there is no propolis ,wax or squashed bees on it, any little thing and the next box will not go down properly as it gets held up. To me, it looks like the metal just has not been pressed together well enough. Too much of a gap that will allow SHB and wax moths a place to grow.
We don't use Queen excluders much as once our bees starting bring in nectar they make a honey barrier quite quickly and the queen usually stays below that. We may start using with some of the HiveIQ hives to see if it makes any difference.
Sounds like HiveIQ was fixing some of the issues of pressing of the metal at the factory with the queen excluder.
Picked up my bees this morning along with a hiveiq kit excited to see the results-thank you for being such good ambassadors to the bee keeping community
what did you think about the HiveIQ?
Alan, great video. I noticed you recommended latex paint, however, HiveiQ says to use acrylic paint. Have you noticed any issues with using latex?
We actually bought the Behr exterior paint, which ended up being 100% acryclic. Our wood hives we use to get the latex exterior paint.
What frame size should I buy for this boxes?
Standard Langstoth Frames fit for the deep and medium, it just holds 9 frames.
great video thank you
Alan, this was a very helpful video. I bought a HiveIQ setup from Les's Bees in Bellingham six weeks ago. Over the last couple of days I applied two coats of paint and assembled it last night.I had watched your video a couple of times and it certainly made the process easier. These hives are tight as a tick and are very lightweight. I look forward to comparing results with my 8 wooden colonies. Thanks! Mike Johnson, Seabeck, WA
What did you think about the HiveIQ?
I saw one you sold to a couple from Longview who are taking the apprenticeship class. It's impressive. Aussie made too!
Thabks for sharing Alan and Bev. I have had very similar reaults with a colony in i have in a HiveIQ. This was a weak colony I moved into the HiveIQ in July fully expecting them to not survive. By September they were one of my strongest colonies. I treated for mites with 2 roumds of extended OA, fed Super Fuel fondant in the fall and a winter pollen pattie in February I have not done a full frame inspection yet. I did find out of the 8 frames I checked (4 in each box) 2 had honey and 6 had brood including drones. Both boxes were full of bees and very active. I added a super a few days ago since maplea are blooming in my area with plans to split as soon as maple is done.
Thanks for the video and the review. I'm also in the Pacific Northwest and your results look extremely promising. UPDATE: I have a HiveIQ single deep that is currently going through its first winter. I opened the hive on a sunny day in December (SW Washington, ~50°F). The bees were everywhere on top of the frames when i opened the lid. They weren't just clustered in the center. I can't wait to see what they will do when spring comes.
How did it do through the summer?
It did well in the summer. The hive is positioned on the SE corner of a garden shed so it gets full sun in the morning and most of the day. It didn't grow to fill two deeps because it had queen issues through most of the spring. It didn't seem to overheat. I peeked inside last week. The hive was very active with need bringing in yellow pollen. They had plenty of fondant left and the lid had a lot of bees under it. They were evenly spaced, not in a cluster. I think they are going to come out of winter strong.
Alan, great video! Question for you, how do you feed your bees in the HiveIQ setup? This will be my first year and it was recommended that I use a top feeder but HiveIQ doesn't use an inner cover. So I was curious how you fed syrup using HiveIQ? Thank you!
I'm starting with a hiveiq hive this spring. I will feed my bees with an internal feeding tray on top of the queen excluder enclosed by my medium box.
@georgeahacker I was thinking of doing the same thing! Thanks for the reply George!
Last year I used a 10 frame inner cover to hole my jar feeder. I placed a deep box with the lid over the feeder. This was not ideal though it worked to get the hive going. For feeding fondant I made a shim to put between the top box and lid. HiveIQ is working on a top feeder that will be out this year.
Thank you for the question. As stated by Jeff, HiveIQ is currently working on a top feeder which will be released soon. If you need to feed until then you can use a frame feeder. But the hive was able to collect enough resources to feed themself during the nectar flow.
I have three hives thats had two queens in them right now going on three years.i have the videos of each time i heck them to prove it
Between the second and third year; the queen typically and notably declines in productivity and can be superceded early and sometimes too late in Spring of third year. Suggest monitoring her production and think about requeening just after flow of second year
@@spirestocksnotification6710 not sure where the information comes from, but my two hives with the two queens still going strong and this the fourth year.i just have to keep plenty of room on the hives fod them.i also have a few hives with older queens and no problem at all.but bees will do what bees will do no matter how much we think we know about them we dont.what works for some will not work for others, people just have to find a system and bees that works for them
I love your video, I just received my HiveIQ and will be assembling it soon. I hope to video it as well. Great Job - I LOVE when your wife comments❣️
Thank you for this video. We are in E Wa, 20 aceres with 2 seasonal ponds about 500 & 800' from the house. Is these areas where I should be setting my traps ? I have been setting them out within 100' t0 200'from the house, with not very good results. We also put up a large pool each year with a salt filter and the bugs just love it ! Thanks again from Spokane ! B&H.
In the spring the yellowjacket Queen will be coming out of her winter "nap" looking for nesting material first, so finding nice new leaves on trees are great areas. Next she will be looking for food.
I really learned a lot from your video, thanks !Were in Spokane ,and are on 20 acers with seasonal ponds 'about 500 to 800' from the house. till mid summer when they mostly dry up. Is these the places I should be placing the traps you showed to catch the queens? ? Thanks again from B& H.
Thank you for this. I'm in NYC, but we have yellowjackets on our terrace. I got some traps and I'm going to put them out now.
Thanks, very well done
Excellent study.
I really liked the idea of placing the heated settling tank, or clarifier tank on the structure on wheels, with the suction pump and the filter attached. I'll copy your idea and do the same, it's very practical. Thank you very much and big hug from Portugal
Wheels a great, especially for smaller spaces as you can move things a lot easier.
@woodsbeeco.2624 yeah, precisely.
Great video.....
Thanks!
That trailer was pretty sweet though! Subbed. Good stuff. That honey house is bigger than most apartments in Boston and WAY nicer!!!!
What a beautiful honey house and really nice setup. Gives me a lots of ideas.
Just got mine together. Before I move a hive into their new home, question regarding space for fondant/patties - doesn't seem there is enough room for these? Have you dealt with this or come up with a solution? I have an idea of using the 3rd box to create the space needed but wondered if that is too much room/air in there ? W
Will the cool thing is that this system comes with three insulated boxes. I would place my empty third box on top and put my feed directly in the center. Because the box is insulated it will retain its heat.
Nice workshop. Need more videos. 🙂 Oh wait, I just found your other play lists.
Who run the world...girls! Who run the world... girls
Without the drones her empire would not last long 🐝
Great job thanks for sharing
I’m a first year beekeeper, but I’ve been at war with yellow jackets for years. I use meat bait tainted with Fipronil, which they take back to their nests and destroy entire colonies. In late summer, I trap the remaining wasps with sweet bated traps. So far, I’ve not seen any yellow jackets hanging around my hive, fortunately. Next spring, I’ll try your method, to prevent any local nests. Thank you for posting!
I do the same and it works amazingly well. Many people get up in arms about this, thinking that we are causing widespread decimation to a useful creature. But yellowjackets have a relatively small foraging area, so the knockout is quite small.
We also do the Fipronil but that would be Summer/Fall. We still want yellowjackets as they are helpful just not in the amounts that we have been seeing.
Hey Alan, Thanks for showing the assembly process! We can't wait to see how it performs in your freezing temperatures, the insulation should excel in your climate. I look forward to chatting more soon :) - Zavier
Great video! Learned a lot. Nice color of the hive.
Very nice! Good looking honey house and great video! God bless!
I am not a beekeeper but I found this so fascinating! 😊 I always wondered about how the queen bee comes to be!!
all the videos say it is ok to reuse moldy frames... wow, so counter intuitive.
I love your content bud keep up the vids
Nice! See my custom beehive and let me know what do you think about it
Very nice craftsmanship.
Hey man watched your video. Pretty cool set up. I need to build myself a honey house
Thank you! Time to get my traps out!
