    My problem with online is this: I'm in a campaign that's really fun, and when the DM acts as the DM he's cool, when the other players act as their characters they're awesome, but when out of game there's only one other player there who is nice. After this campaign, I'm gonna try to peacefully leave the group. It'll give me more time to play with my cousin and best friend who I actually know irl and are nice outside of game.

    I think the worst part is the distractions. In person you can just all turn your phones off or stare at the person looking at their phone. as a dm the amount of times players wouldn’t know what was going on because they played a video while it wasn’t their turn shatters my soullll

    It's so weird how nowadays if you prefer in-person campaign over online campaign, because these feel so different, is or has become an unpopular opinion. And if you go share this opinion on Reddit, it is even almost a heretical opinion there and you'll be answered many times how you play your ttrpg wrong if you play in-person instead of online. But maybe it's just a change phase, that there is a generation growing up for whom ttrpg is only vtt and they have no experience of other ways to play. But still, while I try to understand them, that doesn't make playing in-person a wrong way to play ttrpg and it is an equally valid way to play if you are not a fan of playing vtt.

    Everything you can do for in person dnd you can do in online aside from touch based or taste based things. It just costs a little extra for the live d.j. setup for online spaces. A lot of the times you can get how a thing feels with good descriptions, and depending on the vtt you use you can place a description on the item so the person who picks it up can read the item description while you move the main scene along. I've had a slimey sword described in gruesome detail and captured the attention of my party on something comepletely different when that party member yells "EW, UGH, EW!" and then explained the item description.

    God I wish I had this video back when I was playing DnD online 3+ times a week, DMing my game every week, making custom art that no one asked for, and practically making it a second job. It was obvious that I was putting in considerably more effort, focus, and intensity than my players, and I crashed and burned so hard earlier this year which really woke me up from my close to four year long hyperfocus. Going to be going back to DMing online for the first time in six-ish months and I'm actually excited, especially with the self knowledge that I know my limits. Glad to hear that I wasn't alone in this situation!

    This gives me a lot of inspiration for the homebrew setting i'm working on now. I've started binging your videos and I can't remember which one this was in - but you mentioned something about the lives of the characters in these settings being "grungy" - which suddenly made a lightbulb go off for me. There can be a difference between showing the down to earth, mostly mundane lives of NPCs - and the real problems they face - and the "gritty" world setting of something like Dark Souls. I see so many settings that want to bring fantasy back down to earth, but most of them seem to think "realistic" has to mean "dark fantasy." Lots to chew on here, thank you for these videos.

    I ran a oneshot yesterday, and in the middle of it a player started to play risk of rain and talk over everyone about their run. Then complained about the world I used at the end of the session. I’m sure I could’ve done better with showing more of the world, but it’s kind of hard to take that advice when the person derailed my whole game.

    The thing I struggle with the most is the way that people cannot have multiple conversations running at the same time when online. Sure you can DM them but that's a couple steps too much when you're already chatting verbally. At a table people can have quiet conversations while someone might be deciding what to do and it's totally unobtrusive.

    the tv thing is really cool. also since i already made a comment in the video on online ttrpgs, i felt like itd be weird if i left a second one but i actually did have some real things to speak on regarding that so i thought i'd do it here ive only ever played tabletop online, mostly 5e, and a lot of the stuff regarding attention retention rings incredibly true, both in the short-term "what's going on during session" way and in the long-term "keeping the campaign going without losing interest" way, ESPECIALLY since the friend group i play dnd with has a lot of folks in it with adhd and/or autism from what i've heard i'm pretty sure online games go a lot slower than in-person. what can usually be knocked out in a 4-hour session in person would take maybe 2 or 3 of those sessions online in my gaming group. this is usually because the session gets bogged down by the above issue of attention retention, the limitations of text chat, in addition to potential internet or software problems, and this slowness is the most apparent during combat in addition to this, if a group predominantly communicates thru text chat you're missing out on a LOT of nonverbal communication and so it gets tricky sometimes, especially writing stuff a character says and including any nuances that might have gotten lost in translation that being said it's still a riot and the game's changed me for the better

    As you can't just see the characters you can't really factor in the seriousness or the meaning of what they say according to dm. Even if you understand it. Building up the image with your hand and notebook fills up a bit of that. Still haven't been in a one game yet. I just experience a bit of these things from following multiple yt channels and stories. Writing down key points would help to follow those too. I'm a map person, so having a map would ease it out. placing my notes there would be the thing.

    Other untold problems of online DnD: Its a narcissism circlejerk of kicking everyone out of their groups that dont instantly align with their narrow idea of what DnD should be. Oh you like homebrew? YOURE NOT A REAL DND PLAYER YOURE JUST A POWERGAMER THAT WANTS THEIR PERFECT OC. Oh you dont like homebrew? Youre a corporate cuck that licks WOTC's boots. While in person games people tend to not try to do that, probably because they're afraid of humans.

When we do online, even if my players are engaged… there are other things that will get in the way like connection issues, audio issues, frames, etc. etc. it’s a hassle and happens every time… whereas if its live, everyone is there present and you do not have to worry about those stuff apart from keeping everyone engaged. Also, dice rollers online are idk I don’t trust them HAHAHA

    I really like it, and it does make dying narrative and fun, something I have issue with as a gm (you know, I get attached to _this_ adventurers, I wanna see where they go). Do you think it might affect the player strategizing though? There is a certain difference in thinking "Oh, I'm gonna die anyway, _at least_ I get to do this" and "hm, maybe I should _not_ drink the potion and give them a boost for the next hour so they can X and Y". They'd both be cool, but it can kinda re-signify "what dying means in this table" inside the experience, no?

    • @TheADHDM
      @TheADHDM 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think in a vacuum that kind of thinking is possible, but it ignores the context of "I care about this character and don't want them to die" I really don't mind people thinking about the mechanical consequences of their decisions in ttrpg, especially in the context of "can I sacrifice myself in a way that Raise Dead can't fix to help the party", that's a chain of decisions I genuinely want to encourage and support
