It should be stated that Ireland extends citizenship eligibility to foreign-born grandchildren of native Irish for an important historical reason. Ireland suffered 140 years of economic and demographic stagnation beginning with the Famine of the 1840s. This cycle of poverty, near-absent growth, and chronic mass emigration persisted for at least 5 generations. It made sense in these circumstances to enable as many people of Irish descent to claim citizenship as possible, so that the population drain might be moderated. Recent concerns on the part of Irish snobs that new citizens aren't Irish enough are nonsense. This isn't simply "nationalistic", it's condescending and xenophobic. This attitude assumes that the xenophobe is the only person fit to judge who is truly Irish. But Irishness is not static. The national identity and culture of Ireland has undergone a transformation, and this process continues. The Catholic church has seen its cultural influence and political influence decimated. Divorce, contraception, abortion and LGBTQ rights, are now the norm. This is nothing less than a revolution. Who are the snobs to claim, implicitly or openly, that they get to define irishness, and judge who is or isn't properly Irish? Their views are irrelevant - and ridiculous.

I did laugh a bit too hard at "Turkmen golden visa". A western passport with access to China + Russian passport + reasonable CARICOM or MERCOSUR passport ought to clinch it, but as you alluded to, some countries/territories always insist on a visa or e-visa, even if it's not too difficult to obtain in some cases.

You contradict the arguement you are trying to make mate, the person born in China who speaks Chinese and grew up in that culture, is not the same thing as someone who grew up and was born into another culture, yet somehow are able to claim passports on the basis of being one quarter Irish, even if that person has never visited Ireland before in their entire lives, no Irish person I know of has ever questioned the right to Irish citizenship for people who have lived in Ireland for a long time and contributed to Ireland and it’s society, or those who where born in Ireland and grew up here, not even once 🙄 As I said previously the UK wouldn’t allow people born in other countries to become British Citizens on the sole basis of having a UK born grandparent, so calling out Irish people for being nationalistic on the same basis is utter hypocrisy and double standard at its finest ! Wanting people to actually live in Ireland for a certain period of time before being granted citizenship regardless of who their grandmother is, is a far cry from being nationalistic !

The guy is delusional, he’s claiming that’s Brits with Irish grandparents are seeking Irish citizenship not to skip queues, when in reality that’s the exact reason why they are doing it, or to use it to dodge post Brexit immigration restrictions which is effectively gaming the system. Shouldn’t have voted Brexit or fought harder to stop it, and Ireland and all other EU countries need to tighten up on their overly broad citizenship by descent policies to stop this abuse of citizenship, they would be the exact same people up in arms if foreigners in Britain where getting British citizenship to play the system, yet are are happy enough to do the exact same thing when it suites them !

  • @FAngus-ly8lk

I became an Irish citizen years ago through Foreign Birth Registration, using the documentation of an Irish-born grandparent. I applied simply because I could, out of my enthusiasm for my Irish ancestry. I had no thought of moving to Ireland, though the right of freedom of movement across the EU was tantalizing. I'm a happy Canadian citizen and resident. But I am very interested in retiring in Europe. Once I establish residency, I will qualify easily for EU health coverage. Out of curiosity, I also looked into getting British citizenship, which I think I might have a right to based on my connection through another grandparent and British citizenship rules at the time of my birth. Then Brexit happened. The idiocy of the referendum result was so obvious - for a trade-dependent industrialized nation to walk away from tariff-free access to the world's biggest and most successful free-trade bloc, in peacetime, for mostly emotional, reactionary reasons, with no alternate trade arrangements in place. Mind-boggling. What country, ever in history, has willingly done such a stupid thing? If you have an Irish passport, there is no point to holding a UK passport. Being Irish gives you every right Britons enjoy, plus full freedom of movement in the EU and access to everything the EU has to offer its 500 million citizens.

Read all the comments. Lots of countries got the same idea for naturalised citizens, 10 yrs for Singapore, 5 yrs for Malaysia, 7 yrs for Malta. Literally every old world country got the same rule and grant minister the power to revoke the certificate of naturalisation if one is involved in terrorism which is very normal. What sets new world county at least english speaking countries like Canada USA New Zealand and Australia apart is that they allow naturalised citizens live overseas permanently without filling form to retain the citizenship and declare they only live abroad temporarily per year. The intention is those who come outside of out society should contribute for example pay the tax and work for rest of their life, we give our own citizens the right of keeping citizenship forever doesnt matter where they live bc theyre one of us. - Ireland is for irish. New world counties are founded by immigrants therefore such rule doesnt exist but strip citizenship to prevent from terrorist attacking is just part of national security concern. Lots of Asians i know would rather take british than irish even after brexit. People leave for a reason, if a country is so great with loads of opportunities then why people leave lol.

Anyone asked the Irish? They fought bitter struggles to get rid of Brits!

Brits wouldn’t be able to afford to live in Ireland and I’d say there would be very little appetite, most Brits have never been to Ireland and have zero interest in the country, and British people usually emigrate to places in mainland Europe because the cost of living is a lot cheaper than the UK, that isn’t the case with Ireland however.

I am Irish and have zero issue with people moving to Ireland, but to suggest British people should move for no other reason than to get a passport after 5 years is just stupid, not to mention desperate. There are plenty of good reasons to emigrate such as a better job and better quality of life, going to emigrate somewhere just for the sole reason of getting a passport isn’t one of them.

Ireland does NOT want more migrants. We have been swamped already by economic migrants. Not welcome anymore. We need to deport 100,000s of fake applicants.

UK citizens must stay where they are and form the British Republican Army. The goal is to create a democratic and socialist British Federation. Assistance from veteran Irish republicans is welcome.

yes it's called a ''hrc''. habitual residency. our weather is the least of our problems. our problem is that our EU puppeticians are watching what's happening in the UK and IGNORING IT AND LETTING IN MORE AND MORE AND MORE UNDOCUMENTED ILLEGAL MUSLIMS. We'll be in the same mess as britain soon.

we're right behind you, soon our main street in dublin will be brought to a halt while thousands of muslims make it clear to us that they're taking over and that there's nothing the gardai can do. We are about ten years behind you. 15 maybe. I dread it.

Its not an investment program. Its called citizenship by repatriation or ancestry. Do more research on it.
