Have an Sl2-S that I am very happy with. I don't like tilt screens, though not a deal breaker. Really don't like two different memory cards and that is a deal breaker. Will stay with what I have for now.

Seems like youre having hard times defending Leicas newest and "fastest" camera. For me the SL2s becomes even more attractive since the launch of the SL3s, at least for Photo.

Shooting Leica since the `80`s . Currently film and digital M ,CL and SL2S.Thank goodness for an honest assessment of the lack of focus ability in the SL cameras .Drives me nuts . Still like them though :) Subscribed.

Leica lenses have the AF motor. Those are old and clunky. I’d expect the Lunix brands to perform better for speed.

Hello, I always enjoy watching your videos. It’s inspiring to see your works with Leica, as there aren’t many doing so, and your work serves as a valuable reference for me. I’m a solo documentary filmmaker and have been using the Leica Q2 for my projects. While the Q2 has been an excellent tool in terms of portability and functionality, its fixed lens has become a limitation, so I’m planning to switch to the Leica SL system. Since I aim to work with minimal gear, having a tilt screen is crucial, which is why I’m considering the SL3 and SL3-S. Which one would you recommend? Also, if I were to start with just one zoom lens, which lens would you suggest? (Every filmmaker around me keeps telling me to go for the FX3, but having worked with Leica since I was young, I can’t help but stick with it. I’m curious, though-do you also think Sony might be the better choice for a main video camera?)

Glad that’s your point of view. I’m happy w my sl2s for now.

Only thing that's tempting is the improved autofocus, but as I only own manual focus lenses that's probably not gonna be a good investment for me! Maybe in a couple of years when the price comes down a bit on the used market.

I just sold my Leica sl3 to buy a sl3S body as I shoot in dark venues I need better iso performance the sl3 did not do good in Face and eye detection, and dark lighting conditions even with my q3-43 had a hard time I went in to manually focusing the lens, off topic Hasselblad x2d love the colors 1600 iso had some noise when file was pushed so the Leica sl3S colors are as good as Hasselblad plus dynamic range low noise range and shooting 6400 iso with no issues it’s a win win for me.

Am I justified to feel bummed about this sensor? Is SL3S offering something more than my SL2S that I don't understand? As a side note, I am doing work with the Q3 43 that I never thought possible and that makes me happy.

4K 60fps cropped?? In 2025? For 5k dollars?? Nah. I’ll keep my SL-2s

I just hope this new camera makes the prices of SL2-S's drop so I can get one for a steal.

Tested one out last night at the event in nyc, it’s dramatically faster than the SL3/Q3/Q343. Honestly surprised. When I mean fast, it’s actually fast (not just for Leica standards)

Thanks for the honest review Lukas! I've been thinking about picking up a SL2-S for a while now. Since it's mostly photo for me, I think I'll skip this update and put the extra $ towards some good glass. Do you have a favorite SL lens?

Really appreciate your insights given the vast experience you have shooting with the SL2 line. I just snagged a brand new SL2-S/35 lens kit for under $4k from my local camera shop. If you need open gate or 30 FPS burst shooting, there are tons of other options that are wayyyyyy cheaper. No uncropped 4K/60p on the SL3-S is a huge miss in my opinion.

I really want the sl3s, I prefer the Leica experience. Correct me if I’m wrong, but the anamorphic desqueeze is only for viewing in camera. Should still be able to desqueeze in post?

When are you making a video on the SL3-S?

Can someone compare the AF from a Fuji XT4 to an SL2? Thinking of making the jump since I also shoot M.

i shoot film because I love to print in the darkroom (b&w). If not for that, it would be digital all the way for the convenience.

We dont mind about auto focus. And I love to use manual focus M lenses on Leica SL3.

I think when people say you have to think of it as film camera, in the old days of film, each film has its own ISO sensitivity, so you have to plan a whole day on a specific film and ISO, specially when it is turning dark. In this case its easier to change ISO with a push of a button and turn of a dial. People didn't mean that the output or product would look like film, well maybe with higher ISO and grain in the picture, sure.

What winter gloves do you have?

I have been told that you need to turn off IBIS in the SL2(-s) as otherwise you risk causing damage when you clean the sensor with the camera on.

Hi Lukas, I’ve had the SL2 for two years, but I’ve only used the video function a few times because it seemed so daunting. After watching your video, everything became much clearer-thank you for sharing your settings! I’m now all in. I do have a few questions: Why do you prefer shooting in 5K? Can you explain more about the filters you use? Why do you choose to shoot in "cloudy" white balance? Do you recommend shooting in Log, or are there other settings you’d suggest? I’ll mainly be practicing with someone talking to the camera and another person doing a cooking activity for daily practice. Thanks again for your help!

For anyone still unsure, the wider the lens, the easier it is to zone focus as the depth of field is deeper. That's why 28mm (or even wider) is a good sweet spot for street photography. Meter the scene for the day with your preferred set aperture... f8 or even f11 is best. Now move the lens barrel so that the infinity marker is set to the chosen aperture on the depth of field scale. You'll have acceptable sharpness and focus from infinity to about 1.5m on a 28mm lens. Just ensure you set shutter speed and ISO to cover you for the day - having a higher ISO so you can work the shutter speed to suit works best for me - giving you flexibility to work within the shadows as well as bright lit scenes. Have fun and experiment. If you really want to learn or see how a master of street photography uses zone focusing, just go watch Allan Schaller at work.

This video could’ve benefited from including more technical details. For example, where is there a depth of field? How it is calculated? How much dof falls before and after the focal plane?

I encountered the E-02 error 20 years ago. I was nearly tempted to mail the camera to someone doing these repairs in Eastern Europe. Instead I kept it stored but not forgotten. My Red-Dot repaired Minilux arrives Thursday.

Funny enough I was looking at the sl2 in the uk and you can get them used for much less than half price now. The m cameras seem to hold value so much better. Even the sl lens drop like a tank in value second hand.

I liked the 5d so much I got 3! It's a steal at current prices for what was built to be a high end professional camera costing 1000s originally. Paired with the native ef lenses it's a fantastic camera to use. As for battery life, just get a new third party battery, you will get hundreds of shots for a full day (actually more like a full week) of shooting. The 5d was designed to create images as good or better than film because it was designed to appeal to professionals who didn't yet trust digital. Offering full frame was part of this, but also generating images with a 'filmic' look straight out of camera no need for raw editing. The build is on par with the pro canon film bodies of the time and of course it accepted all of the existing ef and L line up of lenses so that pro canon users only had to buy the body. Today the 5d is probably the best entry point to full frame shooting on a budget. There are few digital crutches here just the OG film camera experience with auto focus.

I moved the time 1 minute up to match the time on my phone...my A7 gen1 is up to date. (No joke)

A friend gifted me one and told me to just worry about the cost on getting it fixed :') and Red Dot had me set and ready soon after sending it in! gonna send in my M2 for a CLA soon

I got mine this year. I switched from Fuji XH2 and I am absolutely happy. I shoot with SL, R and M lenses and just love it.
