    It's worth noting that the Posey Tube provided the proof-of-concept for building a tube in the bay mud that would be similar to how BART's transbay tube would be built some 40 years later.

    Why limited and occasional use by the public? Let me say something. I live in a town with a Frank Lloyd Wright building in the cemetery. He only put one building in a cemetery. It was falling apart until my lifetime when they restored it. But now it sits there locked almost all the time. I lived a block away at one point. I’ve never seen the inside. Do I feel any pride at all that we have one here? Sure, a bit but not passionate pride. Because I can’t actually see anything more than glaring into the windows. It was meant for viewings and it’s only open when the historical society goes in. That’s fucking sad. I’m not saying let Druid Heights be open to be vandalized but let it be restored and used so people know the place exists. In a world where we are short on pride lately; give the people a place to feel themselves. Isn’t that the vision that existed in the first place? Don’t limit its value; open it up as a destination for anyone who is counterculture or LGBTQ or nature loving or a fan of architecture. Don’t have it restored only to hide it. What sense does that make? You want to prove to the government it deserves continued resources for future restorations; then show them the only thing they care about…Capitalism. I’m not pro-capitalism as a person; at all. However, our government is and the site is now on their land. I would like to see this place in the future. Preserve history. It’s against the counterculture to make it a tourist trap. I get that. Would it be better for the place to fall down? And honestly, so close to San Francisco there are so few places for the LGBT community to rally around to see their own history. It’s all been erased and covered up. This could be that place to give hope to the next generation. History is important! We all need to interact with it.

    • @calpreservation
      @calpreservation 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We are curious too. Just a guess: Maybe the lighting system is based on earlier technologies that (while historically accurate and in keeping with the nature of the tube itself) cannot be easily upgraded for modern lighting or energy characteristics without fundamentally changing the nature of the space and its original design? Some sort of like the ambient light of these tubes in their characteristic orange glow; while others prefer the bright white light of modern LEDs?

    After a long life with many (6) brand new homes, I finally retired in Phoenix to another new home. (Probably the best architectural arrangement) Where I have lived, now for twenty years. Soon after arriving here I visited Taliesin West. Was I ever disapointed! The place was in such poor condition that I wonder why they let the people in. There was no vandalism, just near total structural decay! The arrangement was nothing remarkable either. Part of the tour included discussion about FLW's training of his students, who lived in small tent like edifices on the grounds. Another part of the tour was how his female partner had her own, semi grand apartment. Seeing your photo of Frank as the Florida dedication (Cape, cain and all) reminded me of my impressions at Talisman west. It was ALL about Frank!! I believe he not only was a lousy architect, he was a real louse of a person!! BTW, the home we really enjoyed the most was a remodeled Barn constructed by the very first settler on Mercer Island WA. And, yes, we had to rebuild the roof, walls and floors. Added Decks, Doors, Windows and fireplace as well. When we left the place was very much like a FLW design.

    I work on small residential projects. Even a project of 100,000 would have 500 individual purchases. A single purchase might be all the windows. Each window surprisingly has hundreds of parameters. Multiply that up there is potential for tens of thousands of single errors. In addition a project would have dozens of people working for months on end. These errors often occur and the client can see the entire project as a failure because of a few items. I have visited Frank Lloyd Wright homes. They have an extraordinary atmosphere which I cannot understate. FLW used specific geometries such as root 2 which was probably learned in Japan. His buildings are special and this video is unnecessarily petty picking at bits and pieces.

    its heart breaking to know that developers would intentionally set these historical buildings on fire to puroposefully compromise their structural integrity just to be able to demolish them. These buildings deserve better! 😮‍💨

    Flw is really the greatest conceptualist architect. Its his concept that made flw the greatest architect. The strength of his structure is left to the concern of structural engineers. Dont blame flw for weakness of strength. Its his concept that we all thankful for him to have him being born on earth.

I can just imagine the sunrise over Lake Michigan. And facing west, maybe the sunset thru the trees. And in the summer, the trees providing shade. FLW incorporated the nayural setting wherever he could.

    Facadism is basically when it comes to demolishing a heritage building, keep the front facade of the building and reuse it to build something else. Yes some people may find it really weird what they're doing, and it might look just a bit odd to some people with a very old building element incorporated into the new, but it's the way it is. When it comes to heritage preservation, generally, keeping the entire building is the best option, but sometimes just saving the facade is the appropriate option, when the facade is the only part worth saving. A building that has been slightly affected by earthquakes, or a sad empty old building that has been under far too many years of neglect.
