Interpreting: a bridge to cultural understanding
The inability to speak the main language of a new country can affect a person's ability to communicate and convey their meanings as effectively as they can in their own native language. It can also be an additional barrier to accessing and benefiting from the wide range of services available. It is in these situations that interpreters act as bridges to overcome language and cultural barriers. However, using interpreters in different public sectors is not without its limitations and challenges. Interpretation success requires not only the ability to speak two or more languages but also knowledge and understanding of the cultural role in the transfer of meaning beyond the narrowly linguistic approach to convey the essential meaning of what is being said. Furthermore, interpreters should expand their skills and improve their practices in the particular PSI setting.
Key take-aways:
* Improve your knowledge of public services interpreting (PSI)
* Learn about the communication challenges of working in the different PSI sectors
* Build your skills to handle the different challenges
* Take your career to the next level after achieving your DPSI
Nahed Arafat is an Arabic native speaker from Palestine who has been actively involved in Arabic translation and interpreting. Her interest in this field has been culminated by the award of the DPSI in Law, an MA in Translation Studies, and most recently, a PhD in Translation Studies and Intercultural Communication at Sheffield University. Working as a Transcultural Mental Health Worker has provided Nahed with further insights into the way language is used and the challenges that interpreters may face when interpreting patients' emotional expressions. As a result, she developed an interest in understanding these challenges and researched in a systematic fashion the linguistic and cultural issues that have wider implications for interpreting in the mental health field.

Fascinating! Dynamics of conversations and body language do change from culture to culture, in my experience. In Dublin, my Japanese friends found simultaneous feedback distracting and interpreted it as not listening. They use subtle visual cues, like nodding and silence, to signal active listening. In Mexico, group consensus and collective feelings are prioritized over individual opinions or efficacy. One-on-one conversations allow for more personal expression and humor. Moving from Mexico City to live in the countryside, I learned that greeting everyone might draw unwanted attention; a more reserved demeanor is safer. In Madrid, having dinner at the restaurant of some good friends of a good friend I was visiting, suddenly turned into conflict because I was using please and thank you too much. In Ireland, - complete opposites on this particular point -, it would have been appropriate. I was trying to be polite and gracious - what a disaster. 19-year-old me was upset (I had no idea what I'd done!), my friend was upset, her friends were upset. I had come across as arrogant and stand-offish to the extreme.

I took the DipTrans (Spanish to English) in 1990, only the second year that it had been offered. It would have been great to have courses or even a video like this to refer to, as the exam was so new, no-one had any idea what was really required to pass it (this became clear when the IoL, as they then were, held a session in London shortly afterwards for people who were interested in taking/re-taking the exam) and I couldn't find any courses related to it. As a result, I passed only one of the papers (Paper 3). I commissioned an examiner's report on my performance in the General Translation (Paper 1), and was told that my translation was worthy of a pass, but my annotations were not up-to-scratch. (I believe annotations were dropped from the exam requirements a few years ago). This made it all the more frustrating that there had been no way to prepare fully for the exam. Happily, my local polytechnic (where I had studied for my BA in Applied Language Studies a few years earlier), had by then caught up with the DipTrans and I was able to take a very good course there, which concentrated mainly on Paper 1 and the dreaded annotations during the autumn term. Even better, when I retook Papers 1 & 2 late in 1991, I felt much better-prepared and more confident: I passed both, gaining a "Merit" on Paper 1. I'd like to wish good luck to anyone taking the DipTrans, it's a very special moment when you achieve it!
