10 Tips on How to Grow & Propagate Siam Tulip (Curcuma alismatifolia)
I will be sharing some general idea together with my personal experience with Siam Tulip (Curcuma alismatifolia)
Do check out 2 of my other earlier videos on this topic - Part 1

How to Grow a Siam Tulip - Part 2 (Curcuma alismatifolia)
th-cam.com/video/bFYtAO2wbmE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=tMAxVKusvSAAF2M6
Few general matters - Siam Tulip is not a true tulip plant rather it is a turmeric plant family very closely related to a ginger plant. Identified botanically as Curcuma alismatifolia - this particular plant is very much cultivated as an ornament plant.
Native to the Northern region of Thailand, it does have some similarities like a temperate plant where it goes dormancy during winter period. This often happens when the plant is in full bloom and slowly die-back losing it's inflorescence and leaves - storing back all it's nutrients into it's rhizome for the next blooming cycle.
Other Plant Care factor where it really requires good bright indirect sun and well watering with good well drain potting medium. Do take note not to overwater during it's resting period as it can cause rotting rhizome.
The leaves may appear to be floppy and does require to be fastened to a support as it can easily bruised and damaged.
Other unique characteristics are the colors of the top crown which is not true flower petals - known as bracts, these hold like a cup where water is stored. Also there are true flower buds and constant flower blooms on daily basis. These blooms are in violet color.
This characteristic is very much similar like another ginger species known as Costus - where the flowers from the bracts

    I have had 2 desert rose and both have gotten root rot and not from over watering Im pretty sure. The second one was going ok then I went to repot and there was a lot of root rot and sogginess. I have it in a new pot with new soil but its not showing any signs of being ok. It now has some more soft parts that I cut off but I feel its too far gone.

    • @TropicalGarden
      @TropicalGarden 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi, I suggest uproot the whole plant : 1) Wash properly - even the rootball 2) Let it dry in good sunlight for a day 3) Check the soggy and rot parts carefully 4) Trim / scrape the rotten parts 5) Apply anti fungal to the rotten part till it heals and dries off 6) Replant back carefully on the living root part. The plant is fully gone when the whole thing is rotten away, otherwise there is still hope to try to save it.

      @@TropicalGarden Hi I did try and repot it after cutting off what I thought were rotten roots but I didnt let it dry out first. I didnt water it for a week hoping it would dry out in the soil. Should I take it out of the pot and dry it out and then pot it again?

    • @TropicalGarden
      @TropicalGarden 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@AL-ru3nk Yes please You need to make sure fully the rot is clean n dried. Otherwise it can come back. Since you didn't water it, don't wash it. Carefully dig it out n check for rots. If none, plant it back. Only use light spray foliar fertiliser on the plant mix with root hormone for it to regenerate. It should work

    Great presentation, thank you. On the contrary with your presentation I do feed my airplants regularly using organic foliar fertilizer diluted until only ten percent of suggested concentration every 2 to 4 weeks. I always think it's a misconception only to depend on dust and air for airplants nutrition. In the wild they grow on trees under dense foliage, except for the desert origin ones, or the ones that prefer to live on rocks. In their habitat the water drooling from above is nutrient rich water from decomposition of leaves, bird poops, and other decomposed organic materials. Sometimes I give vitamin B1 and some organic based grow stimulant hormons (I actually do not know the benefit but I still give them), also highly diluted. I never dunk my airplants, or any other submerging watering methods. Not practical to me because I have quite many airplants, and I'm not patient enough with the drying process after submerging. Instead I mist them using electric sprayer that produces very fine droplets. I live in Indonesia which the climate is hot and humid like your country Malaysia. I check hygrometer reading before watering. If the humidity is 90% or above I don't mist them. If the high humidity persisted for days I give very ligh mist from far away every three or four days. If the humidity is 70-80% or above I give light mist. And if the humidity is 60% or less I give heavier mist with shorter distance to the plants. I also have many airplants placed indoor with grow light with the beam not directed directly to the plants. The room is well air conditioned and well air movement during the day, but the AC is off in the night. For indoor plants I give light mist every 3-4 days whatever the humidity reading, except for the "White velvety" ones like tectorum and oaxacana which I only water when they are very thirsty already. I fertilize the indoor plants more seldom, every 6-8 weeks with even more diluted fertilizer. I have some bulbosa which I put on my grid fish tank cover, very seldom water them unless they show signs of dehidration. The fish tank water evaporates quite quick and seems like the evaporation in enough for the bulbosas. I placed all my airplants in metal frames, both the ones outdoor and indoor with exception to the giant hildaes which I put in plastic pots with some charcoal bricks to stabilize them. I use copper free bonsai wires, mostly painted ones to ensure more the plants not have direct contact with the metal frames. For Spanish moss I mist them heavily twice a day unles they get showers of rain. Water is seem never enough for this plant.

    • @TropicalGarden
      @TropicalGarden หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Judy, @judyperkins4509 These are the factors you need to note 1) When you say they have struggled Meaning? Leaf and flower burns during the hot blazing day? The best option is Yes : Transfer to Semi Shade Indirect bright sunlight - it is like when you look up Its bright blue sky minus the burning sun. As for putting them in pots: I would suggest to propagate them and start a new set altogether Most more easy and won't stress out the mother plant as it has already established itself 4 years in your garden Regular Gardening Soil Mix that you may get for normal potting mix. Do not use the Aroid mix for Monstera, etc. All the best. Good luck

    The fragrance is like no other you've ever smelled. A fruity, very pungent aroma that distinguish it from other fragrances.😊❤ One of my favorite's

    Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Question: Do you cover the pots with a lid or plastic to keep moisture in OR will that make them more likely to rot? Thanks

    • @TropicalGarden
      @TropicalGarden หลายเดือนก่อน

      I do cover them to retain moisture until it had grown bigger and matures - roughly within a year's time. Rot do take place if the transition have not made in proper time. You will know when once the leaves are bigger with their veins showing with marking. Thank you for your support and encouragement. Appreciate it very much

    I bought chaya cuttings last month and started rooting them. (Off Etsy) It's rained so much that only one is actually rooting, the others have died on me 😞 I'm babing the last one!! Thanks for the info!!
