    sherry from trans atlantic diesel says if you run an electric pump and a mechanicaal lift pump, that the electric pump will blow out the mechanical pump, so fuel may be leaking in the lift pump itself.

      In my opinion the mechanical fuel pumps are the weak spot in any fuel system . I've experienced this often .

      @@wimmol Yes, when they fail, they can fail in an ugly way. Redundant electric pumps with alarms might be the Rolls Royce approach.

    Some mechanic has had good success with hammering in the main seal and his don't leak.

    Nice video. Did you have any issues aligning the flywheel and bell housing upon re installation?

    • @RandomDoive
      @RandomDoive 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks S/V Zephyrine! I didn't have any issues, no. It's running smoothly with no vibration and I've had it up to 3300 RPM. You are supposed to use a dial gauge on both but I didn't have access to one where I was. It's actually fairly easy, so the next time I have to uncouple the prop shaft, I'll probably pull the gearbox and use a dial gauge to check alignment.

    Nice work! Looks like the rear main seal was the bulk of your oil loss, hopefully the sump pan leak is tolerable to keep from having the take the whole thing out. Did you have some damage or issue with the engine mount bearer? Great visuals on the video. Gives a good sense of the scope of the project if folks have never taken their engine apart that far. Naively, I had no idea what to expect when I did it a year ago and it was like opening a very odd and inconvenient Christmas present to get to that rear main seal!

      Hi Ellen, thanks! Thinking of it as a Christmas present is the way I'll go from now on :) It is weird, you stare at these monolithic lumps and occasionally get to look at the insides, it changes your perspective. I had to chisel out a few millimetres of fibreglass on the engine bearer to make room for getting a socket onto a rounded bolt head I've now replaced. There's always one bolt that takes ten times as long as the others!

      Well Pee Bee, we're getting ready for a 600 mile coastal passage which might take anywhere from three days to three months depending on weather and how energetic we are. We're stocked up on fuel, water, food and wine, just waiting for the tides so we can leave the mooring that has been our home through Covid. Thanks for your interest :)

    I see 2 critical install errors. And dangerous ones at that: conditioned air intake is in the same compartment as combustion. Great way to pick up CO and bring it into the cabin! 2 it appears that the combustion air intake is also in the same compartment , also bad. Oh as a side note the fuel pump is installed incorrectly also. They are supposed to be installed on an incline to prevent air locks from forming.

    • @RandomDoive
      @RandomDoive 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Pierre, thankst. The conditioned air intake actually has a pipe leading to the cockpit but it's not fitted in the photos as I'd just got it working. As for the combustion air intake, I don't think is not too much of a problem in my opinion but you are right in a perfect world it should be taken from the engine compartment or outside but that means another hole in the hull, introducing other problems. I believe the pump is fine vertical, they can't be horizontal as that can trap air bubbles. I do appreciate your input, thanks.

    • @RandomDoive
      @RandomDoive 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Pierre, I'm curious about the rule (I've been reading) preventing combustion air being drawn from the same area. It seems to be to prevent any flammable exhaust fumes being recycled through the combustion chamber. What is the risk I wonder? In any case I will fix it, thanks again.

    • @pierremitham2964
      @pierremitham2964 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RandomDoive When the system flames out (or clogs), there is the possibility that exhaust fumes can back feed out the combustion air intake , which if the room air intake pulls from the same space can cause the exhaust gases to get drawn into the living area.

    • @RandomDoive

      @@pierremitham2964 Thanks! That makes sense. I have seen that happen when unable to get the old one firing. I will make the change!
