Car-Free Grand Prix: How the Dutch Bike to Track
Each year on the first weekend of September, the tiny seaside village of Zandvoort hosts the entire world for the Dutch Grand Prix. And while a Formula One race is an unlikely place for an active travel revolution, for reasons of practicality and sustainability, the event’s 110,000 daily attendees have been prohibited from arriving by private car. Instead, organizers have implemented a detailed integrated mobility plan, which has resulted in an astonishing 98% of ticket holders arriving by foot, bicycle, or public transport-often in combination with each other-in 2023. This plan involves the creation of park-and-ride facilities outside the village, and tens of thousands of rental bicycles available for the last mile of the journey, along with the requisite pop-up parking spaces. Each year, the plan is evaluated and refined, with the lofty target of reaching a 100% sustainable mode share during the 2025 edition.
The details of this integrated mobility plan are outlined in the new 16-minute film, “Car-Free Grand Prix: How the Dutch Bike to Track”.

Bikenomics: How Cycling Can Support a Green Recovery in Portugal
Thank you to Hans at DTV and to DCE for this explainer. It helps me to explain protected roundabouts to other road planners and designers here in Australia. At 4:52 when discussing Equal priority for cycle and peds, it looks like the two pictures are the wrong way round. Can you confirm? Thanks Jon.
It is much more comfortable to be away from busy car traffic on arterial roads, but that recommendation is not as transferable to other places than the Netherlands/Europe. Here in the US, many times city officials will use that logic of separating bikes from busy traffic as an excuse to not make the dangerous streets safer and to relegate bike routes/lanes to side streets that are meandering, are hard to navigate, and have dangerous crossings at the arterials. The only principle this strategy benefits is comfort, but it’s detrimental to directness mainly, but also cohesiveness because the vast majority of desired destinations are on arterials, and safety if not designed well at arterial crossings.
Everyone driving in and cycling the last few kms is absolutely not sustainable or car-free in the slighest - that's just greenwashing. There's nothing about a big touring event that is sustainable in the slightest - and a little bit of cycling certainly does not make up for the huge carbon footprint of all of this. All you're actually doing is solving the fact that there are just two roads into Zandvoort that can't handle the amount of people.
can you tell me which event (with more roads) has this level of accessibility? I would say that this should be the main point of the video, that the way Zandvoort manages it's accessibility is great, also much more sustainable than other events.
👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️

Hi everyone.. I'm from Greenspaces SA we are championing safer roads and sustainable transportation in South Africa, we are the host of the Green Cycle Tour Afrika which is a mass cycling destination event. Very blurry.
Amazing!
translated your article in Italian here roma-citta-30.blogspot.com/2024/06/argentinierstrae-di-vienna-come-una.html
It looks very nice. This is a great way of creating cycle networks in places where there is no room for protected cycle lanes, but I think having traffic lights on those minor crossroads is overkill and will make a time consuming stop-start journey for cyclists. If you want this street to be like one big cycle lane it would be better to naturally limit traffic speeds and volumes at these crossroads by eliminating through traffic making sure cyclists have priority with give way markings. Even better would be closing that intersection entirely and making it so that the side roads are only accessible from the other direction. Traffic lights for cyclists should only be used for crossing major roads like the one at the end of the video.
Too much waffle!!!!
I love e-bikes. I've two. Plus a hybrid bike i used in London when i lived there. and a mountain bikeb for cross country rides but as in turning 50 soon i really like the e-bikes.
Unfortunately what happens in front of every school in Lisbon is exactly the opposite of what you see here. Lots of cars blowing smoke and parked on sidewalks, zebra crossings and 2nd lane.
very cool 🤙🏼
The path looks very nice. Do the bicycles have good parking facilities available?
Wie verzint die paaltjes midden op het fietspad 😢
To see this bike infrastructure in use makes me happy ❤
Levensgevaarlijk die paaltjes, niet normaal zeg!
Looks really nice. But, boy those grey bollards are almost invisible! So dangerous looking.
Looks nice, the metal poles look dangerous though
They probably put them there thinking that cyclists might slow down because of it at places where they might encounter a car. I don't like them and they probably will cause more problems than they solve.
I'm surprised it's such a complicated issue. Better lighting in tunnels and require helmet use, 10x ROI guaranteed
Amazing! This is wonderful!
You can't drive down. There is only a staircase with a bicycle channel :(
Okay
comment: Innovations like smart helmets with turning signals based on head motions and airbags in the helmet to protect the biker from further injuries have been made possible by the expansion of the e-bike sector. There have also been launched braking systems that use the bike's speed to determine when to release pressure, preventing the bike from flying off the ground while stopping. Weather and traffic forecasting smart applications have begun to appear on the market. Additionally, with the invention of e-bikes, sustainable designs have been in use.
Great Video, I was in Netherland and saw some train stations where has parking lift bikes, publics and is so very intersant to make in many countries How I can get more information about that ?
Thank you so much for creating this. It's content like this that makes it so easy to "show" people why cycling is so incredible for people.
You need to reach out to the elected officials and traffic planners in Athens, Greece.
This street was created by the city in the first place…removing a lot of beautiful old buildings.
at least they're trying to reverse mistakes instead of doubling down

Are there spaces for cargobikes?
"Cargo bikes, fat bikes and scooters cannot park in the parking facility. They can go to the specially designated areas on the De Ruijterkade. Tricycles, cargo bikes and fat bikes can also be parked in the Stationsplein Oost parking facility. This parking facility is located on the ground floor; so you don't have to go down with your bike." www.amsterdam.nl/nieuws/nieuwsoverzicht/fietsenstalling-ijboulevard-open/
Enormous waste of taxpayer money.
How's that? Where would you suggest people park their bikes? Are you familiar at all with the limited space around Amsterdan Central?
Yre stupid, a lot of jobs in stead of unemployment subsidies

Congratulations for all municipality from Italy. Here in Italy we don't have the elementary infrastructure. We can just dreaming to reach this level. This is good politic.
Prachtig. Nederland fietsland👍👍👌
A beautiful design and use of space where none existed before, and to serve future generations of Amsterdammers along with visitors from around the world. Hashtag Old World meets New World. 🇳🇱❤🚴🏽♂💚
12 years in the making! ...down here in Mexico we can't have a project that takes longer to make than the 6 year administration in turn to end 'cause the mofos wouldn't have a shitty project to brag about 😒
Congratulations on the new facility! Dang, just missed it! Flew into & out of Amsterdam in June. Would have loved checking this out. LOVED riding the tandem in Utrecht. The Dutch certainly can ride. Riding in, among, around, and with thousands of cyclists during my 10 day stay in Utrecht. Didn't see a single crash or close call. Not even a shout of "Hey, watch out!" or anything else. Even the pedestrians are chill when the cyclists break the rules and venture through the pedestrian only zones. Funny how the Dutch realize cyclists won't smash into them, but effortlessly glide on through. Even the scooter riders - but they're over the top. Anyway, ride through a pedestrian zone in the US and you'll be accused of "almost KILLING me!" Spaz 'Muricans don't get it on so many levels. PS The Dutch DO wear helmets. Every "kitted-out" rider on a road bike wore a helmet. Without exception.
Is it free to use?
(late reply) It's free for the first 24 hours, after that it's 1.40 euros a day.
As an ex-pat, who doesn't even live in Amsterdam, this makes me proud to be living in The Netherlands ! A biking infrastructure second to noene here.
The Dutch are so far ahead of everyone else in their transportation systems; I'd feel so proud if I was Dutch. Watching from the US this just seems like some futuristic vision I can only dream of.
I see what you mean. After learning more about the Netherlands and visiting recently, I have become prouder of my heritage for being a 2nd generation Dutch in Canada.
