My Favourite Films of 2022
In a relative return to normalcy, 2022 saw the release of a wide variety of films both in cinemas and on streaming platforms. Here is my discussion of my personal favourites of the year!
Apologies for the lack of uploads last year. As discussed, my work and personal life got in the way of any plans I had for the channel. I do have ideas for videos which I'm working on and hope to realise fully soon!

No Time To Die, the 25th entry in EON's James Bond series, has proven to be massively popular amongst general audiences. A variety of new projects set in the sandbox of the Star Wars world were recently revealed to be in development - yet none seem to develop the overall story in a chronological sense. It also is easily my favorite Superhero movie, MAYBE second to Batman Begins. Just incredible. The Krypton opening perfectly set the tone. I loved the special relationship Lois and Clark shared, her being the only person on Earth who knows exactly what kind of person he is and what he's been doing his whole life. The backstory of brilliant. I think ZS made a bad decision with the "dual ending" and should have removed the robotic octopus fight while combining the Zod fight with the final climax. Otherwise, I loved it so much and saw it maybe 5 times at the movies.

    The new Superman Legacy has released it's new teaser trailer,and I felt I need some clarification on Henry Cavill Superman potrayal to understand it better before moving on to the next gen of Superman. I still like Man of Steel portrayal of Superman even though it's not perfect (nothing is) but having a little change for Superman characteristics was a bold move and we need more of that in film industry to challenge a norm and gave a fresh new ideas/perspectives of an existing character so it be more appreciated and discussed by everyone rather than "a shiny star that's out of reach and just only be observed from a far" but also can feel it's warmth like a sun

    it makes me angry that WB rushed zack snyders hand to catch up with marvel, initially he did NOT want to do BVS so soon, also this movie was really ahead of its time , the plan as henry said was to slowly progress his superman closer to the happy one we see in comics. now all we will get is a MCU version of superman from james gunn unfortunately with inappropriate jokes at inappropriate times.

    • @redx1487

      Agreed. WB did Zack Snyder and Henry Cavill dirty, and as for James Gunn's Superman, I know there's going to be some toxic fans that'll only go watch the movie just to bash Snyder's Superman.

    I think season 3, should have been a separate show not tied to Westworld. A show contrasting the hosts and humans as beings without agency. In alike yet different ways.

  • @richlisola1
    @richlisola1 ปีที่แล้ว

    As for gender? I think they took the AI in the wrong direction, upon learning that “she” Dolores, was a host and thus never really a “she.” “She” being the backstory grafted over her true potential, which was that of a supra human identity, evolving, caged in the westworld/the matrix by a false tale. The wokeness and feminism made no sense-The writers just lacked the vision and to take the hosts to the next level. Better to have ended the story in Season 2 when she left the park. When all else fails, air on the side of the unknown.

  • @richlisola1
    @richlisola1 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree! Season 2 was good, not as amazing as 1. But it worked-And while I appreciate the world building of Season 3, it just… I got the sense that the show-runners and writers did not have a clear vision for the the world outside of Westworld-They didn’t imagine it. Therefore everything in Season 3 seems ad hoc

    I was disappointed when i first watched it, wasnt terrible but didn’t reach the highs of the first two in my opinion at the time. But after watching it again a couple of years later i enjoyed it a lot more, and now after watching it a good few times i think its now my favourite. Maybe it speaks to me more now as im at that stage in my life that i can see what the film was saying. Plus the scene where Andy finds out Gary tried to commit suicide and he never found his place in the world and wanted to live in his teenage years where he felt was the best of his life is brilliant writing and very emotional 😢.

    The World's End was the worst movie of the trilogy in my opinion after I watched it for the first time, simply because the tonal shift from Hot Fuzz to TWE messed with my expectations. I watched it for the second time years later and it went from worst to favourite of the trilogy but also harder to digest. Shaun and Fuzz are movies that I can put on anytime. For the World's End, I need to be in the right mood. Two things (of many). Expectations aside, I think it also hits a different chord as we age and become more and more vulnerable to nostalgia. Watching it in our twenties when so many things are still in the making for us creates a different experience and relation to the characters than ten years later. Mid-30s or older, when we're stuck in routines, and have been working in the same field (sometimes the same job) for a longer period of time, many have families with children that now dictate the course of the next decade. It strongly influences how we now perceive the other characters and how they live their now much more relatable adult lives. It's an age when we realize we're growing older, we see the new generation growing into adults and taking "our" place, we remember our youth and begin to really understand that these years are not coming back. I think that's another reason why The World's End suddenly seems to be a much better movie than we originally realized (or were able to realize). It's also different in terms of rewatchability. All three movies require multiple rewatches if we want to catch everything, every joke, every reference, every foreshadowing and callback. But for the first two, this mostly relates to the humour. The World's End has different layers that are almost impossible to all grasp at the first time. So, here's my most recent realisation: It's hilarious how Gary suffers from main character syndrome and his anger with the world partly stems from his expectations of his future: To be some kind of chosen one who changes the world simply because of who he is. Andy just wants to live a normal, quiet, peaceful life. When the twist comes and the action starts, normally, we'd expect Gary's time has come and he clearly expects so, too. He acts like a main character and action hero but the more he tries to be the cool hero, the more he fails. Meanwhile, Andy doesn't try at all, he just wants to get over with the night and yet, he is the one in the group who turns into the action hero with the cool lines and attitude and impressive fighting moves. It's another twist on the tropes. And then, it's all twisted back after all blows up. Gary doesn't calm down and becomes content with a quiet life (making him the only character of the trilogy who refuses to learn a lesson and change/improve) and Andy doesn't discover his adventurous spirit and goes out and fights for a better world. Things like this give the movie a deeper quality the other two don't have. On the other hand, it's not a mood booster, especially on days adult life feels frustrating and bland.

    The moment Dolores entered the real world, the show fell apart. The writers couldn’t envision our future world, nor the Hosts’ place in it. It reminds me of how the weakest part of the Divine Comedy was Paradiso-Dante was better at imagining Hell and Purgatory than Heaven. Also, Dolores knew that without Rehoboam we were doomed-So her freeing us was not to save us, it was to destroy us. And she knew very well that we, mankind collectively, could not sustain ourselves in a free state. That was Serac’s whole thesis. So I don’t buy Dolores wanting to save us by destroying Rehoboam. Mankind was already saved at the beginning of Season 3. Westworld has a dark view of humankind. It felt right in a sense, that our salvation was in our slavery. And even biblical, somewhere in the Bible it says that it is not even for man who is walking to guide his own step. Perhaps, our fate was sealed. Even with the super AI leading us. After all, it was named after Rehoboam-A wicked king among many of Israel who died a miserable death, and his people suffering a miserable fate amidst his reign.

    The concept of an Alien invasion is sadly the weak link in the movie, but everything else outdoes the first two films. The emotional core of the film, the character arcs, friendships, everything else. It's done so much better here which is why this is my favourite of the trilogy. Hot Fuzz is perfectly written with barely any writing issues, but it lacks the same emotional resonance that this film has.
