I was 9 yrs old in 1956, and traveled from Detroit to Cincinnati by train 2-3 times/yr to visit my grandmother. This historical film brings back so many good memories. So miss the sounds trains make.
I was thrilled to discover this as I live about 20 miles northwest. Bellefontaine was closed to steam in February 1956. The first part of the film is in Bellefontaine, Ohio. The roundhouse, turntable and coal dock are all at Bellefontaine. Mohawk 3005 was "The Mohawk that Refused to Abdicate" in Trains Magazine and it appears at 8:00, heading around the curve to go west to Sidney and Indianapolis. Springfield, Ohio, begins at 9:45. The distinctive depot and the street running are notable. Beech Grove (Indianapolis) begins about 11:00. It is hard not to notice the 6000-series Niagaras stored outdoors, rusting. The last of steam at Indianapolis was retired in April 1957. The last NYC steamer was retired in May 1957 at Cincinnati- a lowly H-class 2-8-2.
so that's why i never heard a steam locomotive in 19556
It's a real pity so little NYC steam survived given how that railroad was one of the later ones to dieselize. Then again, that undoubtedly has to do with the kind of burdensome regulation railways were under at the time.
You should've added subtitles to show the locations.
0:10 that’s the rear of the Cincinnati Museum center aka union terminal
I can't wait for these old films to be enhanced by AI. The scenes with the stern-wheel paddleboat were amazing.
YES...!! Vintage RAIL- POWER..!
1:12 going to be a very common site here soon!
fantastic movie. rare steam and diesel double header.
This guy looks like the only one taking clips of the trains. Thank you sir!
So fun to see trains in this era. What an incredible time to rail fan 🙌
At 7:20, Mohawk #3005, star of the book "The Mohawk that refused to Abdicate" by the late David P. Morgan.
I was only 3 yrs old, But i wish my Dad had taken me to a train yard to see steam in last moments. But they didn't think about those things back then. Now we marvel at films like this. 😢
Amazing stuff here.
It is surprising to see that New York Central had two of its 0-6-0 switch engines in service this late in the steam era. I lived in Jackson, Michigan from 1950 to 1956, where these engines were retired by the end of 1953, although two of them were still on the property (but not in service) in late 1954.
Amazing footage. It’s nuts to me thinking that within a decade of this footage it’d be SD45s coming out, and Amtrak not long after. It all changed so quickly.
Nice footage of the NYC railroad! My 2nd favorite fallen flag railroad of all time, besides the B&O railroad, which is my 1st favorite fallen flag railroad of all time! Awesome! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅🦅🦅🦅🚂🚂🚂🚂
Good stuff
Great compilation. Thanks.
Cool video, well done!
The B&O P-7 president class 👌
B & O= Best and Only
The film jumps up and down.
I love seeing the L-3 and L-4 Mohawks on passenger duty instead of freight.
These must have been the last weeks of steam.
Film from about 5:00 to 6:00 looke more liked being filmed around 1949-50 rather than '56. I am using the cars parked by the track as reference.
9:04 qué Hermosa Locomotora.
Dios!... qué hermosas y Gloriosas Máquinas, donde quedaron ? , deberían tener un Lugar especial sólo para ellas, son parte importante de la Historia, gracias.
Excellent video, Thanks for presentation, from Germany
Surprising that the color didn't fade. Some remastering and you have a great new video.
Thanx
Great vid, Been to Bellefontaine many times.
I thought the NYC retired all steam east of Indiana by 1954.
Great footage. It's interesting how what was once just routine movies becomes a historical record. And with platforms like this, it can be shared with the world.
I wonder what happened to all the steel ?
Can someone tell where the streetrunning at the end was?
Such great footage, thank you so much for uploading!

Fantastic footage!! Thank you so much for posting!
Sure woulda been awesome ear candy at 24:45
Those behemoth steam engines look heavier than any contemporary diesel locomotive.
This is awesome. I live in Bellefontaine. My grandfather worked at the Bellefontaine yard. None of it is recognizable anymore except for a couple of run down buildings. The property is all grown over with weeds and trees. There is, however, a passenger platform still visible where the train station used to be at Chilicothe and Columbus Ave crossings.
Steam Action on the Railroads.
Was only 4years old in 1955 when my mom tookme from Cincinnati to Louisiana to visit her family! Saw just a hint of the L&N diesel type we rode behind, in the "Hummingbird"
Stellar footage of steam engines at Union Terminal Cincinnati. Thank you!!!!
Love this! I was 4 years old In 1955, rode the Hummingbird to Louisiana with my mom!
I love this action! Wish I saw it in person.
😍😍😍😍😍😍
A wonderful time machine to a great age of last steam and early diesel locomotives!
