As more companies invest in electric arc furnaces, the number of steel grades produced using this method has increased. One of the great things about steel is it can be infinitely recycled without losing strength or other properties. We're able to produce over 90% of our current steel grades using an electric arc furnace.

Not mentioned in the video is the fact that, due to the underlying nature of the site, any works have to stay within the existing footprint. The site was heavily made up when the original steel works was built and it's a lasting monument to what long term, strategic planning can create. I think Tata is one of the few Companies in the world who still have long term vision, beyond next quarter's bottom line, and will make this work. The video about the construction of the original steel works is here: th-cam.com/video/dhp7VCwm9uk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ppOnpS_L7jqmP4xr We just need to build a decent size Nuclear power station next door to keep it powered now.

I'm an ex chemical engineer. UK is a service economy (moving money) rather than industrial (making money). Our entire CO2 budget is less than some countries' annual increase. Our steelmaking is more efficient, safer, and cleaner. We'll never see industry like this again. Its why I'm an ex engineer, too hard to find work in the UK. I went into research and that dried up as we were seen as having the skills of the "bad old days"; funding moved to removing industry. I now work in an office. But i will never stop thinking like an engineer, a heavy burden when i see what is happening.

Thank you for your wonderful in-depth look at the logistics and scale of the operation. What has been explained makes sense and in due course will allow Port Talbot to continue steel production and ultimately keep jobs within the community for a much longer period in time. Its great to know that both TATA the owners are putting a huge amount of capitol into the site along with a hefty contribution from the Tax payers of this country into a well thought out alternative. Its just such a pity that in particular the Unions are hell bent on twisting the situation to a political scenario rather than accepting that change needs to take place and some will be fortunate to enough to continue in the not too distant future.
