Opened in 1903 to serve its local community, today the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway attracts visitors from the UK and beyond for a journey through the rolling Mid-Wales landscape that shaped the line.
Our historic collection of locomotives includes The Earl and Countess, built for the line in 1902, and others from around the world that have found a new home here while our carriages come from Austria, Hungary, Sierra Leone and... Wales.
These films will give you just a glimpse of our fascinating railway. But to take it all in, you really need to visit - we look forward to welcoming you.

Congratulations to the Alishan Forest railway
On 19 July 2024 the Alishan Forest Railway reopened throughout after the completion of a deviation to reconnect the line following a devastating washout around Tunnel 42 caused by Typhoon Morakot in 2009.
The W&LLR and AFR are partner railways so this short video was created to send our congratulations on this huge achievement and was shown as part of the AFR re-opening celebrations.

Sir Drefaldwyn returns
มุมมอง 6Kปีที่แล้ว
On 13th June W&LLR loco 'Sir Drefaldwyn' hauled a special train for donors who have contributed to its major overhaul. This was the first official service with the restored locomotive. 699.01 was built by the Franco Belge company in 1944 as a tender-tank locomotive for the German Army but it's unlikely it entered service with them. In 1946 it went to the Salzkammergut Lokalbahn and was sold on ...

SLR No.85 being unloaded at Llanfair Caereinion
A lot`s changed since me and my friends volounteered on the railway in the late 1970s and 80s.
Thank you. It's amazing to think how many people have volunteered and supported over the years and today's railway volunteers continue to build on all that tradition of skill and generosity.
Thank you for a very nice video 👍 ! More of a bufferbeam view and that's even better. Last time I was at Tanllann it was a field where the PW department grew standard gauge sleepers, to be sawn in half by the likes of me.
We've come a long way! Every volunteer, past and present, is part of the W&LLR story.
When driving the loco, at what speed should the driver shift from hydraulic coupling to direct mechanical coupling?
Ideally, about 12mph (20kph)
7:40 are there any running days announced yet for DL-34?
There are some final adaptations for our workshop to complete and then we need to train our loco crews, all of which will take a little while longer. We expect DL-34 to be operating trains at our Gala at the end of August, but watch our social media for updates through the summer.
@@WelshpoolSteam Been on tenterhooks since it arrived in the UK!
Awesome drone footage! 🏴👍
Very good video, like!!
DL34 certainly seems a match for Golfa Bank. What a superb loco to have to hand. I wasn't expecting it to look a bit like the RH&DR's TMA twins, as seen from the drone. Is any tripartite relationship developing between yourselves, Alishan Forest Rly and the ZB? Worldwide, you 762mm gauge types are an endangered species after all!
We do have formal partnerships with both AFR and ZB. Later in the season we will be able to showcase locomotives from the UK, Austria and Taiwan operating on the same line, which is almost certainly a world first!
That’s so nice!
Thank you to your team for producing such an outstanding video for this event.
Hi AFR - it was such a special day and great to have so many representatives from Taiwan with us.
V cool. The contrast in liveries works really well.
All the best in the future. 🇬🇧🙂👍🇺🇸
A fabulous first ride on this engine. Picturesque views and valleys. Thank you for the video this day! 🇬🇧👍🙂🇺🇸
love it !! thanks team!
What a friendly team!
Hi Alishan Forest Railway! Warmest greetings from the beautiful land of Wales.
Hope to visit someday. Would love a cup of tea while watching the scenery go by.
We look forward to welcoming you. Details of our catering specials are here: wllr.org.uk/your-visit/journey-options-fares
Looks like a lovely journey. ❤😊
We think it's the best way to see mid-Wales. 🤩
Ideal solution: Add a 3rd replica loco numbered 824 (name to be decided). In theory there would always be at least one BP loco in service at all times.
In future the 10 year service intervals for our two original locomotives will be offset by 5 years to ensure that we always have at least one available.
Another perfect video. Thanks very much.
Thank you John, we're glad you enjoyed the trip. Do join us if you can sometime this season.
@@WelshpoolSteam Thank you. This retiree is certainly considering it!
That was a perfect video. Thank you very much.

Hadn't ever realised how long the ride was, definitely one to try
We look forward to seeing you, maybe sometime this year?

A great restaurant idea! Great train ride also! 🇬🇧🙂👍🇺🇸
Thank you for the video! Picturesque and enjoyable! 🇬🇧🙂👍🇺🇸
We used to live in Llangynyw, the children and I regularly rode the train to Welshpool and back. Sadly, all the videos of those events were lost so it was nice to watch this one.
The song, as the link cites, comes from the Austrian film 'Kaiserball' - English translation: Emperor's Ball - set during the Austro-Hungarian Empire period. I get the inkling that the producers of the film saw the Salzkammergut Lokalbahn when preparing to shoot it and decided a song number about it just couldn't go amiss. They would have written it into the film, because the idea wouldn't have been founded in the script, hence why it feels so encapsulating, just like the smartly-turned out locomotive and events of this video. Nice touch to do your take on the song. Regards, Samuel Farris.
I like the green better so many black steam 🚂
This green is undercoat and, whilst admittedly an attractive green, the correct historic colour for this loco is black. So those who wish to photograph 699.01 during its very brief sojourn in green will need to get to the line in the next month or so before final painting.
👌
Stunning drone shots towards the end. Timeless, bucolic, relaxing, glorious.
Thanks for the compliment and the lovely description. We think it’s a very special line in a beautiful part of the world.
I was five years old when I rode behind this engine and it's nice to see her in steam again though I must confess I prefer her in her original black and red lined livery.
The loco is currently running in green undercoat while it settles in. It will be finished in black later this year.
Lovely video, which could have been filmed in either Germany or Austria!
Thank you. We love our Austrian connection and the opportunity to run an authentic Austrian train.
Please allow me a question: Why does it carry the number 699.01? It never was an ÖBB locomotive, and the real 699.01 is still running in Austria, on the Taurachbahn. Is it some kind of sponsorship / partnership thing?
StlB named it 699.01 back in the days when it was in operation in Austria, nobody knows why
Great to have 699 back in action again 11:38
A lovely video and well done Tim for getting it edited and on TH-cam so quickly.
Thank you. A day worth celebrating. (TA)
Such a shame there weren’t any shots of Sir Drefaldwyn climbing up the Golfa Bank , no doubt there will be sometime soon. Many thanks for what there is though.
Worrying gap ay 5:37 - hopeit's been strengthened since.
This is one of several small under-bridges on the line where the rails are laid directly above substantial girders that span the gap. The girders aren't easily visible because they're below the rail. The steel stretchers you can see, looking like thin metal sleepers, are clamped to the girders and the rail fixings are bolted to these to hold the rails.
Congratulations it looks great, looking forward to seeing it in person later this year
The railway was come a long way since to rode it as a child. I will be there in April
Fantastic job. Well done ! Hope to visit soon .
Why did it lose the loop in the first place?
The points at each end of the loop were life expired so for safety reasons they were removed.
