Drops Brushed Alpaca vs. Sandnes Garn Børstet Alpakka Yarn Comparison
I had to come back to commend that I personally found Woolia to be not very soft. Interestingly, it wasn't itchy for me, just not soft. Pairing with mohair makes for a softer but very thick fabric. It wasn't on the list but I've seen it mentioned so though I'd come back to comment on it.
I had to come back to say that for anyone watching this video, I got Gepard garn kid seta and it is amazingly soft. To me, its more soft than even the suri that I have tried. It does have a halo, but maybe not as huge as say Rowan or Isager. So if you want a huge halo, then may go for those. But for pure softness, this is the winner, in my opinion. KnitPicks Aloft is surprisingly similar if that's more accessible for some people. I got my Kid Seta from the Knitting Loft, which seems to ship worldwide.
I am really enjoying working with this yarn. Great review!
Thanks for the review! I have a sweater quantity of the white baby alpaca and I was thinking of making a Caidree sweater with it. Maybe I'll hold it with a mohair to reduce the pilling!
Wow that cost really took me by surprise. I would give it a 1 out of 5 just because of that lol. Thanks for the review!
I have knitted 3 jumpers in Midnatssol over a period of 2 years. By now all of them have become so threadbare under the arms that I cannot wear them anymore. I cannot recommend this yarn unfortunately.
This review makes me aware of using wool & cotton blends. I’m starting to be more realistic about the practicality of different yarns in the warm climate where I live. I treated myself to a cashmere sweater last year and it’s too hot to wear very much. I’ve got to add cotton or linen to the mix.
Is this Caron simply soft?
@@cadencenova It’s called Filcolana Arwetta, a superwash merino wool sock yarn
That pilling looks scary.
@@sleepydrJ Depending on what project it’s used for, you may not experience much pilling:)
Please drop availability as part of the rating. Where I am in Canada, it's easier to order Drops and have it shipped overseas then to find a sweaters quantity of the other two in the color I want. To get a sweaters quantity of knitting for Olive I will have to order from multiple stores across the country and hope the dye lot match.
@@stilllookingfortreasure Thank you for your suggestion! Would you be interested in a video for the yarns most available in Canada?
I'm from Northern Europe and honestly, I don't find Sandnes that accesible to me. We do have it in a couple smaller higher end yarn stores here in my city. I tend to use Viking Garn, Hjertegarn, Drops and Novita the most, since those are the easiest and most affordable for me locally. This is however only my subjetive view as a student that mostly buys yarn from sales and bigger stores.
@@riannitt Thank you for sharing, that is very interesting! :)
I loooove this yarn so much! Just finished a sweater vest with it and I’m making a matching sweater for my newborn. I’m excited to see if a more experienced person agrees! ETA: I did get mine on sale, so I’m sure that helps my love for it. I don’t typically have much budget for natural fibers. That being said, it was still really informative to watch your rating and descriptions. Thank you 😊 Helped me narrow down what I enjoyed about it and what I could look for in my next yarn purchase.
@@kaylaaa6351 We’re so happy to hear you enjoyed it! :)
Thank you for your review of Sandnes Garn Line. I was curious whether this yarn tends to stretch or shrink during or after blocking, as this would be helpful information to include. After testing with my swatch, I discovered that it shrank slightly in the vertical direction.
@@Knittersvision Wow! Thank you for sharing!
They do look rough while you were knitting. Btw, viscose is not some eco friendly material. They sell it as that but in reality they use so much chemicals that are harmful to the environment. It’s just “bamboo” derived but it has to go through so much chemical treatments and processes that the end product cannot be refereed as eco friendly of any kind. Watch how they make the fabric made of viscose. Acrylic is probably much more eco friendly than any viscose anything. It’s fooling many as they fooled you.
@@KittenBowl1 Thank you for sharing!
I’m wondering the correlation between irritation on your fingers while working with the yarn and itchiness after putting them on for you? Every single wool and wool blend garment I’ve made last year have been too itchy to wear, but I’ve never experienced any irrational while working with them
@@nancypal That is a great question! Personally I think my hands are less sensitive because I work with them and they’ve built up strength. Perhaps try knitting a swatch and seeing how it feels rubbing it on your arm, neck, etc to see what your sensitivity might be.:)
I've heard this exact review from others. I think Filcolana Tillia is similar. In my research, Isager, Kid Seta, Majo and Onling are all soft. I've tried Isager and it's amazing, and Knit Picks Aloft is so so soft too. People love Knitting for Olive but when I got it, I thought it was just ok, kind of similar to their merino.
KfO mohair is not so soft for me as I thought it would be. For now the softest I've tried is Tilia from Filcolana. It's not similar to this one at all. At least for me.
@@red_caro78 Agree with KFO. I’ve never tried Tilia but have heard mixed reviews. Maybe I’ll give it a try - thanks for sharing! I am in love with mohair haha.
@@jessicasyoon Thank you for sharing! We’re looking forward to trying those!:)
How about trying: drops alpaca silk, it’s more soft than mohair. If you love the softness and don’t want the fluffy ones, try Sandnes garn, ALPAKKA SILKE 70% baby alpaka, 30% mulberry silke You’re going to fall in love with this yarn ❤
@@TrixiaDK Yes, we liked that one! It received an overall 3.96 score :)
I think it’s funny that Americans never think of buying European yarn from Canada. There are quite a few Canadian yarn shops that sell many European yarns. A simple Google search will help you find what you’re looking for.
I'm American and I agree - I especially love The Knitting Loft!
@@Yesim730 Thank you for sharing! From our experience, shipping from Europe has been more cost effective, but we will look into more Canadian shops!
KnitPicks Aloft please!
Love, love love it!
@@Hevene You got it! :)
Would LOVE to see a review of Knick picks high dessert wool and blue sky fibers woolstok worsted please!
@@EmmaLarissa Thank you Emma for thr recommendations! We will add them to our list!:)
Can you also review Isager and Filcolana mohair?
Isager is dreamy. 'I've heard mixed reviews of Filcolana
@@avocadoessss We will absolutely add those to our list!:)
Have you done a review on KnitPicks Aloft?
I loooooove this mohair!
@@louannhawkins4569 Not yet, but soon! :)
Would you consider a best yarn of 2024?
@@cassianblackburn-enever9662 Unfortunately we prefer others more, for example Gepard Kid Seta.
@@UntwistedThreadsI think they meant a list of top yarns you reviewed in 2024
I've browsed cabled sweater patterns many many times during the last year and there are some that I had never seen! Two of them are going in my favorites. Yay!
@@MissSholia How exciting! We’re so happy to hear!:)
Cables on last model are not symmetrical on reglan lines But should be as it catches an eye
😂 one of my goals is to knit a cable sweater. Thank you
@@atorres8760 You absolutely can do it! :)
Hi - I know several commenters mentioned pilling with Daisy - and you pointed out it is a characteristic of merino wools. However, I have also read that Daisy not only pills, but felts with normal usage -- like under the arms. Pilling is one thing (and manageable with shaving, etc.) but felting while wearing, that's seems YUCK. Do you have any additional intel or experience on that front? Thanks!
@@mgy32 We haven’t experienced any felting first hand with this yarn, but Drops Air for example does felt in places like the underarms as it’s warm and gets irritated with arm movements and potentially sweat too :( But that is also the case for other non-superwash wool yarns too.
Ooh, that Ginger sweater is calling to me. Thank you for all of these suggestions!
@@sheryljohnson9540 Yay! You’re welcome!
Such an interesting video, a few now in my Ravelry favourites, thank you
@@clairegasson4187 How exciting! You’re welcome!
Are any of these free
Yes. Some say on ravelry "free option available" which is usually on their site with a few ads scattered around. You just have to click the link on their ravelry info section. Hope that helps.
@@toniesolomon The prices are listed individually on Ravelry and the introduction to each pattern. There are a lot of free patterns on Ravelry and Drops Garnstudio.
You are an creative and intrepid knitter for sure. That is very cute and fun. And it could be done in red & white stripes or many other fun twists. Kudos and thanks for brightening up my day.
@@zoedoodle Thank you for the kind words! Yes, a striped version would be so fun! :)
Question: Since this is a bulky weight yarn, may I ask why you used a 4.5 mm needle? At least, this is what you said on this video. I'm just curious. Wouldn't the stitches be tight since you used a smaller size needle than the recommended size?
@@liziking306 Yes that is correct! We film multiple swatches and videos at once, and not changing needle sizes between each yarn helps with efficiency :)
I would love a review of Rauma Finullgarn yarn.
@@ogostalick Adding that to our list!
This yarn is delightfully soft but it pills quite a lot. I made a sweater with it and it's needed de-pilling a few times unlike my DROPS Air sweater. Although it is softer than DROPS, I think it might be a bit less resistant to wear. It would be cool to do a head to head of the blown yarns (Snefnug, DROPS air and Wonderfluff and any future yarns).
good to know! I want to try Drops Sky and Drops Air in a near future
@@logikgirl12 Both of those are lovely! I don’t want to discourage anyone from using Wonderfluff, it truly is a delight to work with. I was just surprised by the pills since it didn’t seem like it would pill a lot. That said, I can only tolerate soft yarns (I can’t do wooly wools) so I am used to de-pilling. I do love mohair though so pairing a soft yarn can really reduce pilling in my experience! (not Wonderfluff since it wouldn’t pair well) I love hearing yarn reviews!
@@jessicasyoon Wow, very interesting! Thank you for sharing! :)
Would love to see you review the k+c cloudpaca too! It’s helpful to have a big box store comparison to know whether it’s worth it to order online without ever touching it
@@Sarah-ic4yu We will add that to our list! Thank you!
Wonder if it shrinks or expands with washing!
@@yyyy-qg4ep Wool yarns typically bloom and grow with blocking :)

I love your designs! I definition going to add some to my to knit list.
Thank you so much!:)
My socks faded quite a lot, lots more than any other yarn I've used. It was a wine/ purple colour and turned a yellow/orange.
Oh no! Thank you for sharing that!
Your designs are beautiful!
Thank you so much!:)
I’m a huge fan of KFO Cotton/Merino. I live in SOCAL in the desert and it’s a great yarn for my year round weather. I’m so glad you did this review. I’ll say that I order all of my KFO directly from their website and the cost is much less. The shipping is very affordable and quick. ❤
I imagine it would make a great yarn for that climate! We're so glad you enjoy it! Thanks for sharing!:)
Would love to see bigger swatches to get a better idea of the texture and drape! Thanks for the comparison.
Thank you for the suggestion!:)
You have knitted some lovely projects (I didn't realise you were a designer too!). My knitted favourites this year are the Snow Wonder and Sweater No. 18
