Nice vlog. This is a charming temple, which I have visited a few times over the years. They’re doing a good job of renovating and cleaning up the temple compound and built two large Gopuras. I wish they enclosed the old and priceless inscriptions with fiberglass, thick clear plastic, etc. to protect them from the elements. A thin roof overhead isn’t enough. This temple complex first built by Ganga king ನೀತಿಮಾರ್ಗ ಎರೆಗಂಗ, later extended by the Chola rulers of the area has this inscription that you showed: “ಶ್ರೀಮತ್ ನಾಗತರನ ಮನೆವೊಡ (ಮನೆವಗ) ತ್ತಿಪ್ಪೊರ್ವಣ ಶೆಟ್ಟಿ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರ ಕಾಳೆಗದುಳ್, ನಾಗತರನ ಮಗಂ ಬುಟ್ಟಣಪತಿ ಸತ್ತಂ" commemorating ಬುಟ್ಟಣಪತಿ who who gave up his life in the Bengaluru battle. ನಾಗತರ or ನಾಗತ್ತರ must have been a prominent resident of the larger Bengaluru region. That name appears on another recently discovered inscription in hebbal memorializing Kittayya who lost his life fighting the Rashtrakutas, in ಪೆರ್ಬೊಳಲ್ ನಾಡು (today’s ಹೆಬ್ಬಾಳ್!!) in about 780CE. How did the name ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು come about? Some hypotheses: -ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು - ಬೆಂಗಲ್ಲೂರು - ಬೆಣ್ಣೆ-ಕಲ್ಲು-ಊರು; ಬೆಣ್ಣೆಕಲ್ಲು=quartz; Blr area abounds in quartz quarries even now. -ಬೆಂಗಳ ಊರು; ಬೆಂಗ/ಬೆಂಗಳ/ವೆಂಗಳ = ರಕ್ತ ಹೊನ್ನೆ tree; this red tree (Pterocarpus Marsupium) Vijayasara in Sanskrita, grows around Blr a lot, still. -ಬೆಂಗಾವಲ ಊರು; ಬೆನ್ನು ಕಾವಲು= bodyguards of ruler, stationed in a garrison there Historians think that there was a ಹಳೆ-ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು village where Hebbal is today; When senior Kempegowda built a new town in 1542, he named it ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು after this old village, since the three important women in his life - his mother, wife and daughter-in-law, all came from this old village near Hebbal. The entire temple land and property donated to this temple by the Chola kings as grants has been encroached upon by scrupulous persons and have built homes. Government has registered encroached place in the name of encroachers. The condition of the temple is pathetic, lacking much of care and maintenance, leaky roofs while raining. This was brought to my attention, hundi money was siphoned off to help honor politicians visiting this temple by a so called trustee. While i wrote about the antiquity of the temple and its importance a letter to the Endowments Commissioner, immediately the so called governance committee was dismissed and thats how the Temple's renovations were started by temple visiting devotees, including painting its premises and maintenance. Devotees should note well to keep the temple premises clean & tidy so as to enjoy the sylvan peaceful ambience. What ails really is that the lane leading to the temple is filthy, with cows tied, cow dung droppings and water clogg around. No efforts are ever made to keep this area clean, spick & span for Devotees to have a good feeling of this area. Please do not offer any money into the Temple's hundi as everything's going to government who have a lackadaisical attitude towards this temple. You may offer money to the priests in the plate used for performing Aarati.

Chatrapati Shivaji's father used to come here to pray at this temple. Lo! What a son was born to as a blessing from Kailasanatha and Jalakanteshwara swami.
