I am a Railway Modeller with a passion for creating realistic scenes and dioramas for my layout the Edge Hey & Strines Railway
MODELLING A HARBOUR - TUTORIAL CREATING REALISTIC WAVES FOR A HARBOUR DIORAMA OR MODEL RAILWAY
Water that looks like it is moving!! This tutorial is about how I made a harbour on my OO layout for my grandchildren to play with. They wanted lots of boats with a quay and a slipway and it was very popular. I made it for The Edge Hey & Strines Railway using products such as loft insulation foam, wallpaper, acrylic paints and heavy structure gel.
This is one of a series of tutorial videos on HOW I MAKE REALISTIC WATER ON MODEL RAILWAYS AND DIORAMAS.
Videos include:-
WATERFALLS *
WATERFALL POOL *
FLOWING WATER UNDER A BRIDGE
FROZEN WATER

MODELLING A LAKE - TUTORIAL ON CREATING A REALISTIC LAKE FOR A DIORAMA OR MODEL RAILWAY
มุมมอง 209วันที่ผ่านมา
Creating realistic looking water on a diorama or model railway is definitely one of my favourite occupations. This tutorial is how I made a marshy lake in an awkward place on my layout The Edge Hey & Strines Railway. The big challenge was that it was on the lift up section giving me access to the interior of the layout. This is one of a series of tutorial videos on HOW I MAKE REALISTIC WATER ON...

I love modelling water and particularly enjoy adding height to my model railways by putting in mountains, castles and waterfalls. This is one of a series of tutorials on how I do it. Putting water on your railway model or diorama can be daunting, so I am making a series of videos on how to do this. This one is on realistic looking crashing waterfalls. I hope you may find this useful. This is on...

A ROW OF TERRACED COTTAGES ON THE HARLAND LIGHT RAILWAY
มุมมอง 3165 หลายเดือนก่อน
This video has been made to coincide with an article that can be found in the July 2024 BRITISH RAILWAY MODELLING MAGAZINE (BRM). I made a row of cottages on Station Road from a free Metcalfe kit that the magazine was offering to new subscribers in 2023. I cadged 3 of them for this build and restructured them into a row that sits above the village and next to the railway line. An ideal place to...

MODEL RAILWAY ROOM REORGANISATION - COVID STRIKES!!!

I set off with the best intentions. I’m revamping and re-organising my Model Railway room because I have far too much ‘stuff’ and I wanted to have a really good clear out. This was so that I could start the next stage of modelling on the Harland Light Railway (my 009 narrow gauge). I was doing so well and then the dreaded Covid struck both of us. Hi, where can I buy the buildings?
@@Blast2015 ok. I have a selection of buildings on this layout. Some are card kits such as Metcalfe and Superquick, others are repurposed Scaledale Buildings and the rest are scratch built. So no single place. Maybe start looking at second hand buildings on eBay?
Well done looks great
@@peternorris6438 many thanks. I really enjoyed making this harbour.
Hi Carol, it's look soooo realistic 🤩🤩. Many greetings from Thomas 👍🚂👍🚂
@@Ethenheim thanks Thomas. I’m really pleased with how the water came out.
Very well done!
@@Ye_Old_Bats_Craft_Cave thank you. Definitely one of my favourite areas of my layout.
That is a really nice harbour! Grandparents are the best!
@@apathtrampledbydeer8446 thank you. The kids grow up but still like to come and use my model railways when they call round!
Great modeling
@@peternorris6438 thank you. This was a favourite build of mine.
Heh. I wanted an aquarium castle and wasn't satisfied with the ornament I'd bought, so I thought to myself, "surely a model railway enthusiast will have made a castle for their layout, I'll look up how they did it" Seeing this video didn't solve my problem, but did give me something to smile about.
@@ReddwarfIV that’s a unique response! Pleased it made you smile!
@CarolFlavinlocoladies Thanks! Funny thing is, I'd considered using the ornament for my model railway (its what made me consider looking). But I chose to send it back for a refund, the resin cast had a lot of problems.
@ I haunted a couple of aquarium shops before jumping in and choosing an eBay one. I’ve used 4 now on different layouts.
I made a snow castle from another aquarium castle. Link here. th-cam.com/video/_nKBHh4KeL8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Q7bqQkaO6uYFFZpB
@CarolFlavinlocoladies Nice! Your snow castle is the same ornament I had. Yours is a better quality casting, it actually has crenellations instead of a melted mess. Mine also came badly painted, but red instead of yellow. On the plus side, a different ornament I bought was the same as the first you showed in this video, and I very much liked that one. It's in my 125l tank.
Brilliant looking layout 😊😊😊
@@Edlinghamjunction22 thank you. I made it for my grandchildren so it was a very enjoyable activity.
This is a great alternative to using resin. It seems quicker and much cheaper!
It really is a cheap alternative as the look is created underneath with acrylic paint and I like the control of brushing and applying with spatulas. I’ve had a bad experience with pouring before. And it can be very messy!
Hello Carol, it's me again😀. I am very interested in the topic of model water. One day I want to create a lake on my “Ethenheim” model railway. But first my room has to be ready for this💪. Your tips are very helpful for me. By the way, your work looks very nice🤩. Many greetings to Great Britain from Thomas 😀
@@Ethenheim thank you and I’m pleased you are finding the videos useful. The next one will be on making a harbour.and the one after that on making a white water river.
I really like the simplicity of this process!
@@Ye_Old_Bats_Craft_Cave thank you. So much less messy than pouring water which has the potential for leaking!
I really like the cosy steeing of the whole layout!
@@apathtrampledbydeer8446 thank you. It was made for my grandchildren which is different - meant to be more fun than serious. Probably why it has been in so many articles and even on the television!
Another fantastic tutorial, liked and bookmarked as an informative resource.
@@simplesimon2802 thank you. Modelling water can be fun so long as it looks real!!
I'm looking forward to using these techniques on a new Swiss narrow gauge layout. Is the fleece you used similar to soft toy stuffing/wadding?
@@attuslebeard5133 yes that sounds ideal. Cotton wool is just a bit too fluffy and isn’t quite robust enough.
@@CarolFlavinlocoladies That's great thanks for your reply - I'll keep that in mind
I get so excited when I see new posts from you!
@@Ye_Old_Bats_Craft_Cave thank you. You are very kind!
Fantastic Carle so realistic
@@mauraking7620 thank you. I really enjoy the scenery side of my railway modelling.
You have a fantastic eye for realism. It look's great!
Thank you. The best bit of modelling for me is the scenery and I love solving the problem of how to do it!
I always find your tutorials easy to follow. I get very excited to try your techniques myself. Looking forward to the next!
Thank you. I enjoy creating water in dioramas and models and I know it can be a bit daunting - hence this series!!!
Looks great. Well done
Thanks. It was fun to make. I really enjoyed it.
Great video Carol

A really interesting selection of model railways. Thanks for sharing Carol. Roy.
@@roystudds1944 thanks Roy. I do like quirky and original and all of these were. Good exhibition too.
Great Work.
@@TheTastyPie thank you. I loved making the snow scenes.
The show was really good, felt much more friendly than GETS, less crowded and quieter. Looking forward to Warley shows there in future years 👍🏻
@@laurapeters8686 that’s good. I agree it is a good venue I’ve been to before, with lots of space to spread out without ridiculous distances to cover. It is good to know that it was a success and will take place again next year.

Hello Carol , I have just seen this cottage video. ...a wonderful piece of modelling and so meaningful to you Could you please tell me where you buy your figures....I find them so expensive ( ps my full-stop only works intermittently. !!!!!!) Regards, Brian in Australia.
@@brianholmes6574 hello Brian. Thanks for your kind comments. I tend to have a stash of figures and use the ones I need at the time. Some are from eBay but the ones I tend to feature are Noch as I like the detail and increasingly Modelu who base their figures on real people who they 3d print in appropriate clothing.
Hi Carol. I must re-visit the K&WVR, as the last time I was there was October 2021 on a short holiday called 'The Blackpool Lighter' with a company I use a lot - 'Inside Track'. The railway has a real ale bar on its trains, and if you're not driving, steam trains and real ale go well together. I remember sitting in Oxenhope station by a warm coal fire at the end of the day after the last train had gone, waiting for stragglers in our party before returning to our coach for the drive back to the hotel. The gentle hiss of gas lamps complemented the ticking of the clock as they illuminated the booking hall - all very atmospheric. Thanks for the video and the information on 'The Old Gentleman' and his coach. It was good to see David and Martin, too - I'll be seeing Martin at the Rover Reunion on 19th September, but I don't know if David will be there. Here's a link to that holiday from a blog I used to keep (everything recently has been on Facebook instead). vinchad.blogspot.com/2021/10/inside-tracks-blackpool-lighter.html Best Vince Chadwick
An enjoyable video Carol, how's the modelling going...cheers James 🙂👍
@@DYLINGTONMODELRAILWAY no railway modelling at the moment as we moved house and have the builders in. Back to it later in the autumn probably!!!
You travelled on former Metropolitan Railway Dreadnaught carriage - the curved top of the doors is an instantly visible clue. These were hauled by steam and electric locomotives between Aldgate, Baker Street, Harrow On The Hill, Rickmansworth (electric / steam locomotive exchange) Amersham, Aylesbury and sometimes even further north to Quainton Road. Untill WW2 some trains also had a Pullman carriage offering light refreshments! 6:52

Hi Carol, it's good to see you getting back into modelling. It looks like you had a great day out. My grandson (12) has recently started to build his own 009 layout. He's done most of the work on it himself, with very little help from me. I don't know if you've seen it. He's uploaded three episodes documenting his build so far on his Dylington Model Railway channel. If you haven't seen them and get a chance, have a look at them .Let me know what you think ... Cheers James 🙂👍
Hi James. Pleased to get out and about a bit and see fellow model railway people. Waiting for the electrician to put in more power points at the moment but good to hear your grandson has started with 009. I really like the combination of 00 and 009. 👍👍
@CarolFlavinlocoladies he's building petite properties and Scale Model Scenery kits at the moment, and really enjoying the whole process 😁👍
Wow that looks incredibly realistic! Youve invented a fantastic teqnique! Thank you!
Thank you very much! I have used this technique several times and really find it works effectively!
Carol, mounting the churches on a scenic base is a great idea.
Thank you. I do find it easier to work on individual items on my workbench so this way of doing things works for me.
Hello Carol, I like your idea of seemingly tackling one bit of the scene at a time and as we live or have lived in the same neck of the woods even better 👍
I find it easier to sit and work on my workbench, so making individual items suits me 🙂
Great video Carol , and it must bring back many happ memoroes of earlier years
Thank you. It was definitely a happy build to make.
Hi Carol, I just watched this with my grandson, he love's the cottages. I don't know if you've seen it, but he's added two videos recently to his Dylington Model Railway channel, documenting his 009 build. It's early days yet, but he's enjoying the journey so far ... Cheers James 🙂👍

Love your cottages. Our home has English style gardens and a small orchard. My wife, who loves English things, named our home, Orchard Cottage. Bill and Janet from California
We loved that cottage but outgrew it once we had our family!
That's a great name for your house, I think there will be a video showing some of the gardens in Dylington, in a future video 🙂👍
So glad to see you back from your move!! Your winter layout looks to have come out great. Love that you modified the models to suit yourself! Nicely done!
Thanks. I really like to think through ways of adapting things. This was fun to do.
Btw, the background music is also very nice, although at times its volume was almost competing with your narration.
I did realise when I listened back to it on TH-cam but it is a busy family weekend and didn’t have time to change it. It was nowhere near as loud on the iMovie version 🎶🎵🤔
Lovely looking buildings! As someone who would like to kit bash I'm pleased to see this tip on how to hide the joins.
