Race Walk Judging Training - A New Way to Train to Evaluate the Straighten Leg
Beginner and masters race walking has a higher occurrence of violating the straightened leg portion of the race walking definition than elite race walkers. With elite race walkers, unless there is an injury or an athlete is navigating a sharp turn, the occurrence of bent-kneed walking is relatively rare. However, it still occurs. While some cases are obvious, others are more subtle. As a judge, it's important to accurately determine if a walker is in violation of the definition without being subconsciously influenced by distractions from knobby knees, muscular legs, high socks, and more. This video presents elite walkers and allows you to evaluate when their knee straightens and ultimately to decide if they following the straightened leg portion of the race walking definition. Hopefully, if you work through all the examples, you will train your eye to better identify the infractions.
Many thanks to Gary Westerfield, David Harriman, Ron Daniel, Reggie Weissglas, and Maryann Daniel for their input as well as Dan Pierce for asking the question, how can we get better.

Around 80% of race walkers are RUNNING at some point of the race. It's just a matter of who can cheat more undetected. This is a joke, not a sport. They don't even get disqualified when they are detected cheating, just getting a yellow card for "air time" that is RUNNING!
