Why do you need to find a garage before buying a used car?
Today we will discuss why it is extremely important to find a place (garage, agency, mechanic) where you are going to maintain and repair your car before buying it. And how good cars become abandoned because nobody can fix them.

100% true
Made that mistake... Bought a 2011 Toyota 4Runner, that started having suspension issues shortly after I bought it. Now I'm struggling to find a decent, honest shop that can help me out...
ща тебя как выселят от туда
Yeah, when cars were not so complicated they were much more reliable!
Maby not double but I think they definitly are going up in price, especially for one in good condition and in a nice color combo. I bought a flashgreen/atacama V70R that I am currently restoring.
I'm eyeballing a 2008 V70R Japanese import with just 22000 KMS =13670 miles for $22,000 Canadian = $16,113 US funds. looks good but I'm worried because it's a Right hand drive. Should I be concerned at that price?
First, more than 50% Japanese specs cars are a big fraud, especially when it is 20yo cars with minimal mileage. Will make a video on this, but want to find a car and show it. If you are sure in the mileage, buying RHD can be ok option for weekend car but within this budget I think you can find a great condition LHD, maybe you just need to wait a little bit. Also you can visit any car meet of owners and maybe make an offer there.
Also, I have been under the impression that, as a general rule, the more cylinders a car has, the more mileage you can get out of it. how true is this?
Not always, as a general rule - maybe yes, but the best example is BMW 4,4 V8 which is well known being one of the least reliable engines in the world) Today it is getting better but still much lower resource than 4 or 6 cylinder engines.
@@Fat_Petrolhead interesting. I wonder what makes an engine unreliable. It could be too much complexity, or an engine that has been rushed into production with not enough testing or testing that is not rigorous enough, and/or engines with too much new technology. maybe they contain parts that didn't have good quality control, maybe from a third party. perhaps a manufacturer gets too experimental and deviates too much from the norm. could even be due to a bad choice of materials or ratios of various compounds. i know that motorcycle engines can't handle too many k's and i don't think that is just for the two-stroke engines. I also know that some traditional taxi engines can last for millions of k's because they never really cooled down - they were always in use over different shifts, with just a change of drivers. apparently a very high percentage of the damage to engines is during cold starts. taxis, police cars and certain other fleet cars are very frequently maintained and serviced, an probably also use genuine parts when they need replacing. finally, diesels used to be built very strongly, probably due to the requirement to tolerate the compression ignition. this is the little i know. amen
@@PlaAwa It could be because of any reason you mentioned, but the main as I see it - why would manufacturer produce the engine that can last forever? Doesnt look like cool business idea. I remember Ford (not 100% sure about the company) was proud to present some of their new engines with a resource of 240K kms.
@@Fat_Petrolhead good point! 'planned obsolescence' means they can still sell future products, plus generate parts and service income in the meantime, while not having to invest in perfection in the first place.
hi, is there a rule of thumb (like model years) to easily tell whether a particular DSG uses a wet or dry clutch?
Yes, dry one name is DQ200, usually goes with 1.0-1.8 engines. But you can google the name of the gearbox and model you are interested in.
@@Fat_Petrolhead thanks, cheers. yes, I now see on wikipedia that only the DQ200/e were dry.
My 2007 XJR has more than 300.000 miles in the clock (492.500km right now), and it still pulls strong as day one. In terms of maintenance, the main problem with this car is the air suspension (6.000€ in original parts for just the 4 air struts), the rest of the maintenance is quite affordable for the kind of vehicle it is.
3:30 For CVT? I'd be comfortable with 5k km, nothing further 😂
That make sense)
Hello. If i don't do 5k miles a year, I still have to change oil once a year?
Engine oil lost its protective structure not only with a mileage but also with age. If you do 3K per year, there would be no problem if you change oil every 1,5 year, but I wouldn’t go for more.
I would personally avoid AUDI like a plaque especially this old. Endless money pits. Also, Mazda CX7 uses 2.3 DISI MZR engine which is Ford Duratec. They are very thirsty for oil so I would go with a Mazda 3 or 6 2l petrol instead.
Hard to call Mazda 6 with 2.0 engine a petrolhead car, it is good in handling but extremely slow.
@@Fat_Petrolhead unless it is a Mazdaspeed 6 ;)
Fun, under 5k, reliable N52 in a z4 is the best bang for buck right now. The issue with your options is the insane associated cost with Haldex
All right, that option is great for sure!
Volvo v8💪
1:53 Thank you for mentioning, we had a 2010 A4 1.8 TFSI (same block as 2.0) and it was comically unreliable...
Yeah, had 2011 car with this engine and it burned oil from new.
I have 2001 Bmw x5 i love it so far😊
Great car)
gti in the same generation did not have the same problems as a longitudal engines in a4 and a6 those babies handle 350-380 hp no problems. And the 3.2 in the a4 and a6 is even more unreliable than the 2.0 tfsi
Have never heard about serious problems with well taken care of 3,2 up to 150k kms mileage. And as for 2.0 I personally had a car burning oil like hell from new.
Love the video and totally agree. these cars are severely undervalued given their uniqueness, rarity and the fact that its 300 HP, AWD, active chassis, and 4 piston brembos all around. its hard to find anything else around that price with those features! one thing to note about buying a tuned/modified R - it does depend on the tune and whether or not they kept ther 4T4 or swapped for a T5. many people who tune have swapped for T5s in the volvo community...its increasingly more common now. the T5 bottom end has been shown to put down 500 WHP reliably with stock pistons and rods. unopened. If you find a modified R with a 2.3/2.4 bottom end its a gem.
Thanks for the feedback and additional info, will search deeper)
A4 is really a great car with 3.0 tdi. Will miss proper Quattro.
Is this a right hand drive car, or did you just flip the image?
The second)
Good video! I just recently bought a 2007 X350 (XJ) Daimler Super Eight! It’s very rare as they only made 853 of them worldwide. See a short video I made of it on my channel and let me know what you think 👍😉
He is right. I seen red pink Toyota coolant turn brown or dark red. I change my coolant every year. Once a year.
Maybe too often if it is not a Supra or something same exciting) But for sure would not make it worse) And thank you for taking care of your car it is a rare attitude nowadays!
My car is 21 years old and still has the original coolant. No problems!
And it seems to me you’re not going to to change it in the nearest future 😄
I do mine every 4yrs,owned a 2001 Yaris for 14yrs & changed the coolant every 4 yrs with Prestone,on the 4th year it loses its bright radioactive yellow tint. Never had an issue.
but how?
How what?
This advice is moot. A warning light will light up if your engine is overheating long before any damage is done. Far more important is to keep a wary eye on the valve drive belt or in some cases drive chain. There is no warning light here and if it fails you can pretty much throw your engine away. Generally, belts should be changed every 50 to 60 thousand ks. But it's advisable to check them regularly during this time. Wear on belts shows in deep ruts across the belt. You can lengthen the life of a belt by spraying it with silicon once in a while. Wear on chains is not so easy to see but they anyway last far longer. The life of a chain can be lengthened with a drop of oil every now and then.
Thank you for the right advice regarding the belt. But let me disagree about overheating. Not all engines would survive one overheating and not every time you can switch it immediately. And not all damage you see immediately.
@@Fat_PetrolheadI agree. You can overheat and cause engine damage without seeing a light on the dash. And if the light did go on, you probably wouldn't get turned off in time to stop damage. That light comes on after you've already hit the danger zone.
very true, especially in summer
Outside weather doesn’t effect overheating much you can overheat your engine in winter with almost the same chance.
Thx for information sir
Every 5 years
Better every 2 years)
@@Fat_Petrolhead I mean the coolent, tho there are alot of cars that u can skip that part or just rinse it with water using a garden hose and youll be fine
@@Fat_Petrolhead I disagree, 4yrs max.
The X358 with the 4.2 supercharged engine is a piece of work. I've racked up 145,000 miles in a Range Rover with this engine and other than standard servicing I've never been disappointed. I'm now running a ex Japan Daimler Super 8. The ultimate wolf in sheep's clothing. It has the ability to scare the life out of Tesla drivers - which is good!
Yeah, had Range Rovers with 5,0 (not supercharged) and 4,2 supercharged, and tbh prefer the second one!
I think 90% is not the right figure, but 50-60 for sure. Than overheating and for sale😂
Depends on the country, but much more than 50% everywhere I guess)
Or maybe a crazy thought... European manufacturers should invest more in making their cars reliable. Reliability sells, they're missing out!
That’s true but tbh almost all German cars nowadays are quite reliable, there are some exceptions off course, but not so many)
I'm not sure that values of the 2.7 diesel will go up. They are fantastic cars (I own one) but they are not welcome in so many cities now.
Yep, just buy a 50k EV, that is their solution🤣
@@Fat_Petrolhead for £50k I could drive my diesel Jag into London twice a week until I'm dead. Wouldn't work in Brussels though.
