It should be illegal for companies to just discontinue a device like this. They're just turning perfectly working devices into e-waste. I'm glad there's a community to resurrect these devices and to save them from going to waste.
Short and quick to the point, noice review! Although I believe you went a bit too negative, I bought them, and they are awesome! Is it better than an actual monitor? Of course not. They complete devices like the steam deck and also provide convenience to use devices while laying down and/or anywhere.
17:39 right click and open?
I don't get why Spotify would break this even more. I mean people bought it with their money and now we are finding a use for these again and Spotify is actively trying to break it again! That should be illegal! I mean it should fall under breaking someones property! This is why open-source stuff is so important F those big companies.
where can i still get one for cheap
Spotify should get sued for bricking these things on purpose so you can't use it in a different way.
4:00, 9:05
It took them more effort to brick it they could have left it and let it get disconnected
no brave? thats crazy
At this point, Terbium now supports the Brave browser. When I was filming/first published, Brave didn't work because it doesn't support some features Terbium used to access the Car Thing through USB.
@ okay thank you so much, used edge anyways but thank you anyways very insightful video much appreciated
i wonder if someone tried to use it on a 3d printer.
Yep, I've seen it used as a klipper screen.
They want to break the opensource projects !?
So they aren't going out of their way to break open source projects specifically. But any project that relies totally on original functionality (like the unbrick mod that puts the Car Thing back onto an older version of the software/firmware) yes, Spotify is breaking that as it goes.
4:58 He said " the device should be Bluetooth capable" What device should be Bluetooth capable? My phone is Android. He said Android isn't good. I don't have anything but Android, please don't tell me I have to buy a new phone or tablet or whatever??
Ok, so just for clarity. Android will totally work, and it doesn't even need to be all that new (Android 4.3 or above). The reason I say Android isn't ideal is we're replacing the cloud (which doesn't work anyway) with a device... and that's where Vector will get his "smarts" from now on. So if your phone is off or too far away, Vector will be "dumb" again. If it's always on and near him though, Android is fine to use. Or you could use a laptop, a desktop, or even a Raspberry Pi... so long as that Laptop or Desktop have bluetooth. That's how they connect to Vector.
So they bricked it because they don’t mant to support it anymore? A device people payed for, and work on keeping it from working. that’s illegal as all heck… it’s pathetic
Alas, in the US, it's not illegal. And Spotify never officially sold the Car Thing in the EU. But it is pretty terrible, yeah.
@@anoraker Never sold in the EU, that expains why I've never heard of it.
this looks so fucking cool i want it. as like a temperature monitor on laptop, any alternatives to this?
So you could build the Desk Thing with a Raspberry Pi alone. I'm working on a guide for that right now.
Hair is crazy
Thanks I guess?
That's just Android. Wipe it and install stock android on it. Or install a launcher via USB debugging
Hah nice try but no… not even close. None of that will work.
Why won't it work?
Just some random advice. If you want to show a windows or Linux tutorial, just load up a virtual machine. No such thing as not having windows available. This can apply to any video like this
Or I can show love to another channel that already has a great tutorial. Thanks for watching!
Virtual machine sometimes glitches up things like that. Very uncommon but it can happen. A real Windows or Linux setup is safer
@@juniorsilvabroadcast agreed. And that all I have is M processor Macs right now adds additional complexities, especially when trying to attach USB devices through the VM.
i would love for it to work with apple music one day
Everyone wants different app sets. I prefer TH-cam Music, and am considering making software for the Desk Thing to use TH-cam Music once I’m done learning to code. This isn’t to say that that’s a bad idea, I don’t care what music software others use, but there will likely be a Apple Music version in the next few months (If it doesn’t already exist (I haven’t checked yet))
Good luck with TH-cam Music. Alas, Google doesn't provide an API for it, so that makes supporting YT music pretty difficult at best.
@@anoraker I figured out Google has no official API, I am considering 3 main options, Im considering the 3rd party TH-cam Music API, using the TH-cam API and getting it running on a Music interface, and using basically a Chrome Extension to modify the Music site to work for the Car Thing.
Is Spotify really trying to break this?
Already broke it, yes.
@@anoraker On purpose? Or is it only a side effect of changes to their service?
@Sparkette They just break their device. Spotify is like, "nah, we're not supporting this device, we're giving up!" And they added a code that shows up, "Car thing is not supported"
@@anorakercalling bullshit on this. Spotify isn't stupid enough to break something like this when they aren't supporting it anymore. that would absolutely open them up to a lawsuit lmao.
@@Sparkette On purpose, and they've made both device side changes and server changes to remove its functionality. Several updates to the device and app removed it's "add a car thing" feature for instance. But the Car Thing was HEAVILY dependent on server side work.... all the Car Thing really did was load up a bare-bones webpage, and then the server provided everything else... album artwork, play buttons, playlists, you name it. They've already killed much of that, and will continue to remove more as they go.
Just bought this from Bunnings in Australia and made sure that the 3 year warranty also applies to the batteries ( I have this in writing)
That's great to hear - hopefully the warranty will save you some headaches down the line.
I expected the car thing to be cheap now, was wrong
Alas, the price for many of them are outrageous. Spotify wishes it could sold them for these prices.
YOYOYOYO
Yo?
I want one so bad. I have wanted one for years. Maybe some day.
quick question since latest Mac Os update he has stopped working and cant get him to reconnect - have tried multiple clean re-installs but to no avail wirepod doesnt open/run and constantly get "error: rpc error: code = Unavailable desc = connection error: desc = "transport: Error while dialing: dial tcp connect: no route to host"" anyone else had any issues?
This is one of many reasons I will never use Spoticrap
I wonder if you put a 1tb expansion card into a series s will you have 1tb or 1tb and 512gb
how about a splash proof you open it
Well, the HMD Skyline isn't very water resistant (IP5... splash resistance) to start. I think that's partly down to the repairability, yes. But this method of removing the back doesn't break any glue seals, so that should help some.
Thank you so much vector is now up and running but there is one thing I need to keep the laptop open for it to work.
Yep, that will be the case. Your laptop is now his new "cloud" and without it he loses his smarts. You could buy a Raspberry Pi and keep that always running with wirepod to save on energy.
is there an alternative?
I've made a DIY version that's Eink and lives on your desk. Currently working on a DIY version for your car. But as for one you can buy... not as much.
Hopefully "normal people" dump this on facebook marketplace now that the thing is bricked officially. This would make a perfect upgrade to my desk setup, but they are impossible to find.
They're here and there... but yes finding them at a reasonable price has been difficult.
a device $90 new is now broken and going for double on eBay. Ridiculous lol.
Yeah, especially when you consider that all original buyers were able to get a refund.
well its not broken any more!
Tbf if you don't want it anymore just sell it. People are way to hyped about the device. You probably earn your money back selling it 😂
Ok?
Missing the point entirely
it does not let me
It does not let you what?
The absolute best thing about car thing was the PHYSICAL controls. Being able to swap between my playlists at a buttons press removing the need to take my eyes off the road was the best feature. Touch screen controls will ALWAYS be worse for driving.
I agree. There was a lot of promise in the device... though the timing was probably bad.
Love your review! How would you compare the image quality compared to the quest 3? I have trouble with quest 3 because it’s not the clearest and sharp. Would you say these are sharper and more vibrant?
Sharper maybe, not necessarily more vibrant… but up there. For gaming they work. For productivity I found it hard to read text and didn’t like that I couldn’t see my whole monitor at once.
Hi there, thanks for the excellent article on getting Vector up and running again. I have had Vector working perfectly using WirePod for a couple of months until yesterday when I upgraded my Mac OS to 15.2 now WirePod no longer opens the web interface 192.168.1.99:8080. I have tried deleting WirePod and reinstalling and also repeating the Vector update process. But I don't get the WirePod set up screens it just runs however it won't open the web interface. Can you help please? Thanks.
THANK YOU FOR THIS!! I tried calling my local dealership to help me troubleshoot over the phone and they wanted me to bring the whole car in.. ridiculous..
You're very welcome! So glad to help.
Nocturne Devs here - Thanks for the review! Currently we're working hard on a new flashable image that removes the need for a Raspberry Pi while using it in a car and we hope to have that out soon. The image loading issues you're experiencing are interesting because nobody else has reported that yet - nonetheless we'll take a look and should have a fix out if its something other than a network issue.
I have near gigabit speeds, so I don't think that's the issue. I'll keep an eye out on this though!
@@anoraker it isn’t speeds that may be the issue, as both devices are local. It may be something as simple as some configuration on your router.
Long live the Carthing
Hype ✨
Can vector see items you put in front of it and answer questions about it... like if I put a flashlight in front of it and ask.. what is this. Will it be able to identify it as a flashlight? Or if I hold it up to a a soda fountain and ask which of these drinks is the healthiest, will it be able to answer? For that type of money it should
I have the 1050 (larger version of this). I use it ONLY as as a smoker. Not sure why you say it is not a good smoker? It is an amazing smoker! Some of the best smoked ribs, chicken, and beef have been made on this grill.
In my experience, at least for the model I have, it doesn't retain heat well enough when using it as a smoker. So I went through a lot more fuel to use it as one than just using my dedicated smoker. Maybe there's more differences between the 600 and 1050 than are immediately apparent.
Are there any similar type bots that can see what you put in front of it abd answer questions about the item... liketv dinner nutrition label and ask if ots a healthy meal etc
How do we get vector to use camera and other sensors with AI?
Great to have him finally out of the drawer again. Is it normal to have to re-bind him every time? I used my laptop to fix him up, but now he only works if my laptop is on, and I've went through the process again each day. Is that normal or did I do something wrong?
The laptop serves as his "brains" and so he won't work when he's not on. He should repair automatically though. If you prefer something always on, you might consider installing wirepod to a raspberry pi instead, which uses less energy.
To bad they start to fill there phones with crap Apps you can’t uninstall.
Even though they worked together with iFixit and finally made RAM replacable again (which I really like!), they still solder down the effing WiFi-module! So, if you don't have WiFi7 from the start, you will never get it! And only on T-, P- and L-series, while E-series, Thinkbooks and ideapads still have M.2-2230-adapters.
It's definitely not perfect, I agree. It's a step in the right direction.
I can’t even make my little guy discoverable on my mac 😭
Can you possibly help with boxer ? They stopped his app and now he doesn’t do anything much.
I can look into it. But I don't have a boxer robot, alas.
@ thank you x. 🙏🏻. Boxer is like if cozmo and vector had a child. He’s very wild and naughty. Saying o oh. And tooting after eating. Why do they take the apps away. It’s not fair on the kids.
Thank you very much!!! I have been leading with this issue for 2 weeks, I even bought another cable, but the issue continued. I followed the instructions I found in the internet, but nothing worked, until now that I found your video.
So glad to help! 🙌
