No Drill Tilting Solar Panel on a Truck Camper!

As soon as I got my used Cirrus 620 I realized that the built in solar panel wasn't enough for my needs up here in the North East, especially with the low sun angle and short days of winter. So: I built a no-drill tilting solar panel rig from a 100 watt panel, 2x gas struts for a trunk or hood, 10mm mounting balls for those struts, and a tilting solar panel mount designed for permanent tilt all...

Actual landing 00:47 seconds. Landing a GlaStar on the shore of Flagstaff. Flew it relatively light. Airplane has an O360 and 850 tires. This is a good example of a backcountry landing in a GlaStar. It is no cub but will also let you take long trips with ease. Grateful to have this airplane- it fits the perfect niche of decent short field performance, long distance cruise, and reasonable cost.

    Not drilling is always an excellent method. Did you consider using a higher wattage panel?

      @@stahpit1971 the charge controller and wiring was for a 200 watt setup and I was space constrained so only the 100 watts. For more power I have a 200w solar suitcase that goes to a separate charge controller. Only need it on the winter though- for summer this is more than enough.

    Extremely slick! I've been eyeballing one for my Challenger II to help reduce the clutter on an already cramped instrument panel. I was between this and the Blaze TC-5. The extra battery, RPM, and hobbs functions seem like insane value by comparison.

      @lincolnb3415 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nice! You don't even have to do the RDAC if you didn't want to for those functions- agree, it feels like a no brainer then. If you don't use those CHT/EGT fields it does switch the display around to optimize space.

  • @amydelpiere9315
    @amydelpiere9315 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Thanks for some winter camping discussion. That seems like a lot of moisture accumulation for one person. You need to vent even when it's cold. We leave our rooftop vent popped up a bit sometimes even leaving the fan on low overnight. We put Dendry in our camper when we rebuilt it, then later because we had it I put our Froli system under the bed also. Finding moisture under the mattress is scary. Hope you're getting lots of time out there skiing.

    • @lincolnb3415
      @lincolnb3415 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agree- it definitely felt like a lot. I have started leaving the vent open at night with decent results. The biggest thing though was getting some usb computer fans to blow air under the mattress during the day. I can start with a bunch of frost on the aluminum and then after eight hours it’s totally dry. With the Froli system it really helps by allowing the air to circulate. Right now I wish I had a fan vs. the AC- the AC vent function won’t work on 12v. Maybe that’s a summer project- or I might find I want that AC! Happy camping!

    Just wondering how can you put that camper up and take it off the truck by yourself?

    • @lincolnb3415
      @lincolnb3415 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey- this camper has side legs (like most other truck campers) that can expand/retract to lift the camper off the bed. I take them off as this stays on the truck most of the time but put them back on if I need to. These legs are electric but my old one had crank legs, either one works by yourself, but the electric is much faster as all four can go at once vs. you running around cranking each one. As for the release mechanism on the camper straps, you simply lift up on the handle and it goes into free mode where it will extend by just pulling on it so you can then use the legs to take the camper off the truck.

    Hello Lincoln. Hope you are good !! 🕺🎈🍾🥳 Thus far, speeding through your previous YT Vids - and, all I see is the back of your head (mostly) landing and taking off from fairly remote locations 🛣in north eastern USA states !! I also see you are now into the: “campervan truck life” which is probably the reason why that; Algo Rhythm chap decided to push me down your rabbit 🐇 hole to your howf 🛖when I was looking at various YT Vids on this type of life from different Countries !! This is also my passion in life, although I am in different continent from you over here in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Our weather means my campervan is somewhat different from yours with regard the insulation 🥶☃️!! My question is: What do you do for a living - in order to stay afloat ?? It must be fairly expensive to keep your single engine ✈️ in the air with regard the cost of JET 1 alone, notwithstanding your other passion of wild camping ⛺️ in your camper 🚐. Do you take private clients for a days flying jolly around various POI at various locations ?? Thus far - it looks like not a bad life you have carved out for yourself - however, something tells me you also need a stream of steady income to maintain it !! Spill the beans 🫘 fella - I might learn something from you that enables me to have a similar experience in my existence on this planet 🌎 we all share !! Thanks 🙏 Take care and stay safe 😷 James 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

      Hey Mike- heater works phenomenally well. Biggest thing is that it is very loud. I’ve been at zero degrees and heated right up for work. Because of the noise, I just sleep in a negative twenty sleeping bag that keeps me happy- for really cold nights I put even more blankets/sleeping bags over it. As for the shower, I’ve used it once- with eight gallons on board you use it up quick. At a campground though I could see it being useful. The hot water heater also works quite well.

    • @lincolnb3415
      @lincolnb3415 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fair: I guess it's a bit of I'm grateful for what I have and have made it work. The two main issues I have are likely due to the climate I use it in; jacks and skylight. I use it as a four season camper, for which it is not intended. I think I've finally gotten around that with the recent mods but to your point, if you're going to buy a new one then you likely don't want to avoid these issues. Then again, for the price, I don't think you can find a cheaper new one. With many running north of 30k, the Rogue, even at 15k does well. Also: the dealer has supported me for a skylight replacement and jack replacement, even just sending me the jacks to avoid the trip to the dealer. I haven't paid out of pocket for the manufacturing deficiencies, just for my own mods to make it work better for my use case.

    This is exactly what I'm going for in my topper\camper build. I couldn't have designed it any closer if I had actually seen this model before. Sorry to hear you've had some manufacturing issues. That's one reason I'm building my own. Haven't got to the tilting roof yet, but I'm close. Trying to figure out my interior layout. Any thoughts on yours and what might be better? I'm thinking about even having a shower\bathroom. Is your truck a 1/2 ton? I'll check out all your other vids on the camper too, and maybe some of the flying. I've always wanted to fly and one day I'm going to try an ultralight. Cheers!

    • @lincolnb3415
      @lincolnb3415 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey- good luck with the build. I really like the interior layout of this camper; works really well for me and I'm glad I picked it over the EB-2. You can find the layouts and dimensions on the website. I'm fine without a shower and bathroom- it's either the woods or good timing. For me the biggest thing has been the lack of insulation for winter use but I think that's a rarity. All the other issues have been around the roof lift jacks for the roof or the skylight. Otherwise it's been great. I'd do without the skylight and then for the jacks I'd prefer a beefier setup or a manual gas assist option. Truck is a 1/2 ton with helper springs- had to get a newer one that is also a half ton but put in sumo springs.
