I'm a road cyclist getting into the world of gravel and off road cycling. I am learning about gravel and cycling all the time so I will be sharing what I learn. I hope I can help save others time by sharing here. I will be trying to answer some of the questions I had while learning about gravel riding and purchasing my first gravel bike and accessories.
One Bike Does it all - Gravel bike as a do it all one year review

ProBikeGarage bicycle maintenance app overview and review
มุมมอง 7433 ปีที่แล้ว
Quick overview on ProBikeGarage app for bike maintenance and service. The app syncs with Strave and lets you schedule intervals for service and maintenance on your bicycle. www.probikegarage.com/
I have this bike as well, 2019 model purchased in 2020. My experiences are slightly different with maintenance. The faux hydraulic braking system is what really bothered me. It's more of a hybrid mech/hydraulic system, that big ugly contraption that takes up all the bar space up front is the hydraulic reservoir. I posted a short 3 video series on bleeding and changing the brake fluid because it was damn near impossible to find on the internet and non existing on TH-cam. My LBS I purchased from also told me the squishy brakes and long travel was "normal." The travel in the brakes should not be normal, which is what you'll find when you research it like you said. I should post my own review also. The bike is definitely good, for all the reasons you stated and more, and the price point for coming with a 105 group set was great. Good video!
Im pretty sure the frame is actually aluminium at the back and is integrated into the carbon. It kind of has to be, there is no way you are screwing into a carbon fibre thread there. My Revolt looks like it, they do a good job of hiding it though
This seat seems to distribute the mounting point stress. I am going to look at close up on the bottom. Most saddles seem to have a pressure point where the rails mount to the seat. I have one seat with springs now and like it for shorter commutes. I think you need a hard shell so you dont sink into any jell type seat on long distance. Short distance jell and springs seem to be better, long distance you need a seat you dont sink into..IMO.
As I merrily meander through countryside roads with my Revolt Advanced Pro 1 with 47mm Pathfinder Pro's....
I had that same year model with two wheelsets, giant's cxr2 and the slr2 for road. It definitely works as a roadie and feels more stable too. I love the revolt so much that I got the 2022 version and transferred my wheels over. The cxr2 carbon wheels are very tough and the slr2's give it a more aero edge.
Nice! I love this bike! I've thought about upgrading but I may wait a while, I'll hit 10,000 miles on mine in March or April, depending on weather here in KY. I kinda want to see how many miles I can get out of her now. Still love the bike after all these miles.
Headlight will also choose brightness based on speed when connected, dim to lowest when stopped when riding at night (when paired to head unit). Tail light will change flashing pattern when car is approaching. it's a great safety combination set up. I also tend to ride more towards the middle of the lane on quiet roads, knowing as soon as the radar spots car, I can move over.
What do you think about using a revolt advanced as a touring bike with a conventional rack and panniers carrying about 9/10 kgs. Bearing in mind the forces involved upon the mounts on the drop outs I’m wondering if it would void the frame warranty if it were to cause the frame to crack. What do you think?
I am not sure about that. I would think it could handle it with no issues but I'm sure a dealer could help you answer exact weight capacity. I think it would be a great touring bike though, I've thought about doing some bike biking myself, I just need someone to go with, not sure about doing that on my own. :)
What was your main issue that caused you to move to the bisaddle? Every saddle causes me numbness issues and I’ve tried over 30. Every shape every size. I’m interested in this saddle because you can make the saddle any shape and any asymmetrical shape
@zwiftsushi sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I tried out for the same reasons as you. I had tried a lot of saddles and didn't want to keep buying so many different sizes/types. I tried it due to it's adjustment options. I found it helped me A LOT. I have actually moved to an SMP saddle now and it works better for me on the road but I use the BiSaddle on my indoor trainer now. I was having an issue with the BiSaddle bending on my road bike. I am over 200 pounds though so that could be just a me issue. I still think it's an awesome saddle and definitely worth trying. I think if you sign up for their newsletter you can get a discount code and they do sales often as well if you can wait a bit to buy.
@@thegraveldude oh my gosh that’s not a problem. Thank you for answering my question. I’ve struggled with this issue since I started riding. Thankfully outside has gotten better. I spend a lot of time inside. I’m demoing ISM as they have been the best support I’ve ever had and leg clearance. But I’m still having soft tissue problems. Next step is bisaddle and that’s all I can do I’m maxed out.
@@thegraveldudeyou get one of the Eagle beak smp saddles? The 90 day trial is compelling for the bisaddle.
@mikepfly2 yes the funky looking SMP has been amazing for me. I agree the 90 sample is great for the Bi-Saddle but check with your local bike shop that is a dealer for SMP, many have samples you can try for a while before you buy. I would recommend that, I've found that samples are a great option these days.
What size is your frame? I am 6"4 too. Thank you.
I have an XL frame. I had a bike fit with it and no issues adjusting it. I was also measured for the bike before I ordered it from the Giant dealer. It's the right size for me.
Greetings. Can I find out the model of the trunk?
Sure it's an Axiom I believe it's a Journey rack. You can find more here. www.axiomgear.com/products/racks/
@@thegraveldude Thanks!
I’m intrigued with the saddle , I’m looking to purchase for my MTB what do you think
To be honest I actually moved to a SMP on my gravel/road bike and use the BiSaddle on my indoor trainer now. It's a great saddle but on the road I found the SMP to be better. I weigh over 200 pounds and I think I was bending some on the rails. Got one replacement base but it did the same thing. May not be what caused it but I think weight was a factor for me.
On my 2022 Revolt advanced i run Gravel King slicks and love them the wheels are Hunt carbon and i agree this bike does it all ,i have recently fitted a Stages power meter and this has really helped with my climbing as i can now keep an eye on my output and not over do it which is what i was doing before i got it . Great bike enjoy it. Alan UK
I am considering to buy a revolt if it is suitable for commuting to work after installing a rack to carry panniers. Do you think it works ?
Oh I think it would do that just fine. Should give you plenty of room once you get your bags and such set up. Do consider the rear rack changes the center of gravity a bit though, nothing you'll notice most of the time but if you get up out of the saddle 9n a clime you can tell a difference.
@@thegraveldude thanks for the reply. I will order revolt advanced pro 1 soon.
Thanks again for this video. I was having trouble understanding Giant’s claim about a seatpost adapter being available for a rear rack. Makes sense now!
You're welcome, glad it helped you out.
Hi, thanks for the video. Whats the widest tyre you can fit on it? Thanks
I can not remember the official size but I used 30s and had good clearance around the tire so I'd say you can go up to a 32 or 33 easily.
@@thegraveldude Thanks 👍
so what is the exact rack and which connector/adaptor is it?
It's an Axiom Journey. Here's a link to the manufacturer site. www.axiomgear.com/products/racks/journey-racks/journey/
How about the adaptor for seat post
I believe this is the unit. I would check with your local Giant dealer though to be sure. bobs-bicycles.com/shop/components/skewers-seat-collars/seat-collars/d-fuse-rack-mount-adapter/
Thankyou
NIce bike, but I personally couldn't live with that paint color.
Thanks, yeah it looks better outside in the light for sure. It's not my favorite but I love the bike overall. I've thought about repainting it, I may after a few scratches....
Just want to say thanks for the video. I'm looking to get one of these, well 2 actually, as I'm having an operation "down there" and the doctors are not too happy about me cycling afterwards... I'm hoping this will allow me to continue as i *need* to be out on there trails here in the UK. The thought of giving up riding deeply saddens me. I need to absolutely minimise the pressure in the perineum to stop any damage and this saddle looks hopeful.
Its a great saddle I actually switched to a Wells now but the BiSaddle is a great saddle too. If you are having saddle issues I would recommend a bike fit before you buy a new saddle or two. I switched saddles after the bike fit and I'm more comfortable. Everyone is different and I think a fit could help you greatly.
@@thegraveldude Hi, thanks for the reply and that's good advice on the bike fit. I'll also have a look at the Wells saddle, you mean SMP Well saddles I assume?👍
Yee sorry the SMP Well. Great saddle.
This adapter does not show on Giant’s website nor at any of the retailers in The Netherlands. Where can I even buy this adapter..?
It came with my Contend but I had to buy it for the Revolt. Maybe call a Giant dealer directly and ask? It is odd how Giant does their parts, they are not well organized in that area.
@@thegraveldude Thanks for the quick response even after so much time :D. It is a bit confusing, even if I got the adapter now, the rear racks have changed (now only have one mounting point to the post) so it wouldn't even be compatible with the adapter :S. Yours have two!
Yes the one I purchased has two. I think some of the Axiom units still have two connectors.
Glad to see there's at least one review of this bike; searched for a while, but simply couldn't find one. Until now, that is. Yours is well-informed and based solely upon personal experience, which is ideal; thanks. Had this bike since 2019; and, as I live in rural Wales, UK, where the roads are far too poor for road tyres, I had to replace with touring tyres: Schwalbe Marathon Plus 700 x 32. Heavy, yes; but, not really being a roadie, I much prefer comfort over speed. My arse and legs have thanked me ever since.
Good Evening Is this still for sale? I want to buy it!!!
Unfortunately no I sold it a couple of years ago. Good unit actually.
Hi. Very helpful video Thankyou. I have a Revolt Advanced 2 which I love. Struggling to get a rack for it. What is the exact model you use here please?
Thank you very much, I'm glad you found it useful. It's an Axiom Journey. Here's a link to the manufacturer site. www.axiomgear.com/products/racks/journey-racks/journey/
What is the seat post jawn you have on seat post?
I guess you mean the Ottolock rolled up and stored on the seat post just above the frame? It's a bike lock you can roll up and store on your frame for easy storage. I haven't actually used it yet, I just have it in case I need to make a food or drink stop while I'm out on a ride. www.ottodesignworks.com/
What size are your tire specs
I sold this bike a couple of years ago but I used Conti GP 5000s in 28 or 30 I believe. It was a great bike and those tires worked well in it. I sold it after I purchased my Revolt gravel bike. I'm a weirdo who doesn't want a garage full of bikes so I sold it to off set the cost of the Revolt.
The only reason I asked cus when I went garage salen over here in Mass where I am from I had gotten a Giant escape that came with disc brakes which that model don't come with and 700c tires.. 2 different rims and 2 different wheels .
i love how the rax make it look like a commuter so theives will not get turned on by this bike as much
I am interested in what sort of watts this bike takes to move at certain speeds in certain environments. For example, what sort of watts it takes to travel say 26k an hour on a flat light gravel windless course.
That's a good question, I've seen other channels like GCN do that but I have not done that experiment. I may try that and let you know. Of course the tires are a huge factor I've anecdotally noticed the road tires are at least 1MPH + faster than my current tires and probably 2 MPH fast than the gravel kings. That would be a cool experiment though.
Are you related to Perry Stone?
No not sure who that is.
@@thegraveldude oh ok, thanks
Gravel bikes are crap off road and crap on road
Thanks for the comment but for me it's great. If you're used to faster race bikes and true MTB bikes I can see your point. I'm just out to ride for fun and exercise though at o for me it's great.
A really interesting video.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the feedback.
Hey mate, great video. Would you use those Schwalbe tyres on gravel if you only had one set of wheels? Thanks
Maybe very light gravel but nothing chunky or technical. It would also be rough on climbs and I feel more likely to puncture.
I have the same bike and I have to agree with you. For me it’s great for sub 50km medium to fast rides, but if I’m going any further I prefer my gravel bike for comfort and endurance.
It’s a tractor
That's a bad thing?
This saddle looks promising. Does the wedge piece come with it?
Yes it does, comes in the kit.
Hi thanks for the helpful video. The giant website (and that of other retailers reselling the same product) indicate to clamp the d-fuse rack adapter to the frame instead of the the seat post itself. Are they being overly cautious? my "revolt advanced" frame and seat post are both carbon, so am afraid of using the clamp in either -- especially with the forces that a loaded rack will put on the site of attachment. Althought from the looks of it in your video, the clamp would not fit on the frame part below the seat clamp, only on the seat post. Any thoughts on this? On the other hand Giant does advertise their own rack that bolts with a single rack arm and bolt to the frame-bit connecting the seat stays. My current rack which I like and trust, uses the same mounting system as the one you have in your video (i.e. 2 arms) and would prefer to use that with the adapter if it is safe on carbon. What do you think? thanks, Al
Sorry for the delay in responding. For some reason Google didn't notify me of the comment. I would be concerned about clamping the frame for sure. I'd just stick with the Giant adapter for the seat post since it. Is designed to take the force. Actually I have gone to a frame bag away from the rear rack. To me the rear rack caused some balance issues when handling I think due to the weight being behind me. The frame bag moves the weight to the center which feels much more natural to me.
Hi @The Gravel Dude. Thanks for this video as well as the installation video, they are definitely useful and I going to pull the trigger and get in touch with BiSaddle. Thank you very much for sharing.
I wanted a Trek Domane AL 3 or 4, but 3 different dealers didn't have any in stock, so I got a Giant Revolt 2 2022 in August. I too am a road rider not a trail biker... Still riding stock 700-38 tires... Do i need new rims if I want traditional road tires 700-32???
I didn't with the Cxr-2, I've gotten down to 30s with no issues at all its a great bike man, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
Great review. What size bike do you have? I have a revolt advanced 1 in a medium and am trying to figure out what size I need. I'm between the 4.5 and 5 L
I have an XL. I would recommend you go download the pdf template and print it out. That way you can actually see how it fits in your frame. That may really change your opinion once you see how it fits your bike. Also really watch water bottles, the bag may cause issues if it goes too low. If it's close I got some adapters that lower my water bottles a bit and they really helped, especially with the larger bottles to carry more water.
I have the contens ar and i use 32c road tyres. I'm thirsty fir the 2022 revolt it looks amazing. If i get one i would probably use 2 set of wheels. Pirelli Cinturato Velo TLR both road and gravel look amazing. Continental contact urban is a nice hybrid road tyre.
what saddle bag are you sporting there @5:30 pls ?
Actually it is a generic bag I got off of AliExpress so I'm not sure of the exact details. I this a 5 or 6 liter bag on my rear rack. I actually stopped using it and I'm using an Apidura frame bag now. I found that worked better for me.
Your mic sucks
Yes unfortunately it does.
Great video! Can you tell much difference in performance or times with alloy DT Swiss wheelset v. Giant? I recently picked up a 2020 Revolt Advanced Pro 0 with carbon Industry 9 wheelset and Gravelking 43's. I also want to make it all-in-one and plan to use the I9s for road and get a gravel-specific wheelset. Trying to weigh pros/cons of alloy v. carbon for gravel wheels (other than the obvious cost difference). Thanks.
Actually for me I think the tires are the big difference in speed more than the wheels. When I put the Schwalbe Pro Ones on my Giant carbon wheels I had a noticeable increase in speed and I've set a lot of personal records on the road tires vs the gravel tires. I probably average 1-2 miles an hour faster depending on the day and goals of the ride. As far as feel the giant tires with the road tires definitely "feels" like a road bike and the DT with the gravel tires feels more like a 4x4 truck. I never put road tires on the DT swiss but I'd bet they feel a little slower but probably not a drastic change. Though keep in mind I'm not a fast or powerful cyclist so I'm sure a racer would have very different results or comments. Let me know if you have any other questions.
It is awesome to hear your experience on the Revolt. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you very much! Glad you found it useful.
Thanks for making this video, it's near impossible to find info online about mounting cargo racks on these Giant bikes that don't have mounts integrated in the seat stay.
Glad you found it useful. Yeah that is why I make these videos. I'm surprised Giant has so little content like this out there.
Hi! Thanks for the feedback. I was thinking about doing the 2wheels set on my Revolt advanced 2. Do you have to adjust the derailleur when you switch cassettes?
No for me at shifts just fine. I've seen some other people doing 2 wheel sets and most seem to not need to adjust anything when switching. It seems as long as you are getting standard wheels you should not need to make any adjustments.
Thanks for the review, I'm thinking about doing exactly the same thing with the same bike so really helpful! A couple of questions if ok - what model Revolt is it (and is it 2x or 1x) and what pedals are you using, SPD-SL or SPD etc?
Thank you very much. I have the Revolt Advanced Pro 1 with 2X.i use SPD MTB shoes for ease of walking when off the bike. I find they work best but I've thought of getting some road shoes for longer road rides, not sure if I'll move to them or not though.
……and always check the light if for some reason you pause your computer. It doesn’t automatically go back to the user light position after you turn it back on.
Yes I've found that as well. I think it goes to sleep and changes settings.
Nice. Looking forward to getting back out, I’ve put 28 Continental GP 5000 on my pure road bike (Spesh Allez) and an as yet unridden Giant Revolt. Surgery semi- unexpectedly put a stop to things
Hate to hear that for you. I liked the GP 5000s a lot, good tires and I'm sure they'll be great on the Revolt. How you feel better soon and get out on the Revolt.
Just subbed! Cant wait for my gravel bike and I'm going with these tires cant wait to try the setup. After watching your vids I think were similar riders as in my mtb is too much for road ridding but I enjoy riding road and gravel a lot probably more than mtb trails. I want a comfortable fast bike that doesn't make me look crazy riding around the neighborhood or local paths. I'm excited to see what updates you bring us!
Yes sounds like we are similar riders! I love the Revolt, it's an awesome bike! Run about the 2 wheel set up, it really gives your the best of both worlds for sure!
Thank you so much for the Video! My 2021 Revolt has this adapter too but came without a screw sadly, if everyone finds this usefull: Its an M5 - 14mm Screw, at least it works with one of those.
Glad it helped you out. Good to know about the screw size too!
You sir are a legend. Have the same issue. Thank you so much.
Can you stick a regular rack on this or is it giant specific? Also interested in how much weight it can take.
You should be able to use a large number of racks. I can't remember the brand I'm using but it is not Giant. As for weight the rack is not much at all, it's the bag and all the items you put on it since you have all that extra room. For reference I've moved to a frame bag away from the rack and it weights 2 lbs when loaded with my regular items I take on a ride (tube, tools, Co2, tire levers, etc.).
