Land Rover Series 2 door hinge modification - weld test

I’ve modified a Series 2 front door hinge to take a side mirror, copied from an original Land Rover offering. This video shows destructive testing to see how well the weld bonded to the original cast steel hinge.

LT230 case preparation for MaxiDrive 30% reduction low range gear set.
มุมมอง 1188 หลายเดือนก่อน
Just a quick video showing what’s required, and how I clearance the LT230 main case to run MaxiDrive low range reduction gears. In this video I’m showing the 30% reduction set, the 49% set is very similar but needs more material removed for the larger diameter low range output gear. Same procedure applied. Hope this helps someone. Thanks for watching 👍
MaxiDrive 30% Low Range Intermediate Gear Set Part 3 - Bearing installation

Finally back to working on the MaxiDrive 30% low range intermediate gear set, this time installing the 2 tapered roller bearings and the needle roller. You could press or drift these in cold, but this is another way to aid installing them.

MaxiDrive 30% Low range Intermediate Gear Set Part 1 - Differences
มุมมอง 191ปีที่แล้ว
As I go through completely rebuilding this Land Rover LT230 transfer case with Ashcroft ATB and MaxiDrive 30% low range gear set, I thought I’d share the differences in the modified intermediate gear cluster, and the changes to support bearings which effects removing and replacing them. Hopefully this will give an understanding of what’s going on and what we need to know prior to removing them.
LT230 ATB Vs Factory Centre Diff
มุมมอง 2.8Kปีที่แล้ว
Continuing on from my last video, I thought I’d show the insides of both the Ashcroft ATB and the Land Rover factory centre diff for the LT230 transfer case. Hopefully this helps a basic understanding of both. And hopefully the audio is better this time 😬. Cheers 👍
LT230 Front Output Housing with ATB Centre Differential
มุมมอง 688ปีที่แล้ว
The LT230 has the option of fitting an ATB or Automatic Torque Biasing Centre differential. This offers some advantages over the standard centre diff, it also makes assembling a little more tricky. Hopefully the differences explained and install methods will help 👍
MaxiDrive Low Range Gear Set for LT230

A more in-depth look at the order of assembly and installation of the MaxiDrive low range gear set for Land Rover LT230 transfer cases. These principles apply to both the 30% and 49% lower low range gear sets manufactured by MaxiDrive. Please check out Mike from Britannica Restorations Ltd here on TH-cam. He has many videos on the LT230 as well as a huge resource of Land Rover related information.

    Thanks for the video. Some very good points and knowledge. I've been hands on with cars, machining, etc for most of my life and I am surprised how much I still didn't know. Cheers.

    Considering whit took to break that and the fact that the 2 halves of the hinge will support and prevent flexing, I think you could use the mount for a springboard when camping by a river. :)

    Thanks for sharing. They look great. I've been meaning to do a set for over 10 years. I really need to get into it, though mine will have the welds ground smooth and they wont be worthy of being left as-is. :)

    Nice video, what is the diameter size of low spur gear in the intermieate gear?

      It’s about 71.5mm outside diameter

    whats the reson for the reduction low range gear?

    • @Kustom110
      @Kustom110 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      To give more control off road. The slower you can go and still have traction the more control you’ll have. It increases engine braking on descents (again, more control). It also compensates for increased tyre diameter (bigger tyres will act like a higher gear ratio) Land Rovers have had different final drive ratios over the many variants. The original Range Rover was 47-1, 1 Ton Series were 55-1, the Tdi Defenders were 43-1 and the later Tdci Defenders are 65-1.

    I don’t think the light weight of the mirror would ever break even the poorest of welds. My S2A has the mirror mount on the hinge.

    • @Kustom110
      @Kustom110 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sure, but it doesn’t hurt to do things well and learn through testing. There is also more to it than just the weight. As the mirror is mounted on an arm and offset, it’s basically on a “lever”. All those bumps on the road will create a fatigue stress at the weld with the mirror wanting to move about.

    Is this something you would say you are glad you did it by yourself rather than buying a fully assembled one?

    • @Kustom110
      @Kustom110 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think it depends on the individual and their needs. For me, I definitely like doing what I can, you will always learn more (unfortunately sometimes by mistakes) , have a better understanding of your vehicle and the individual components. Being on a budget , you can save some money doing things yourself as well. I also have a high attention to detail so it definitely suits me to do things myself.

      I"m doing the math on it and after the ATB and the other upgraded components and the kit i'm at 500 pounds which is about 1100 cheaper than buying it. I guess so long as I dont' screw up the shims It'll work out@@Kustom110

    I have a lot of 'slop' in my driveline, did fitting an ATB in the transfer box help to get rid of some of the slop? Kind regards

      I’m yet to run mine (currently in the middle of a massive build of my 110) but everyone I know that has one, say they make a positive improvement. The other place to check is drive flange to axle shaft spline wear.
