What you’re not being told about Trump’s trade war
Donald Trump's proposed tariffs have been big news. But what do tariffs actually do? Will they work as intended - or are there potentially unforeseen consequences? In this video, I do a deep dive into tariffs to explain why they aren't all they're cracked up to be.

When the Dollar inflates due to Tarriffs what Currency should I own?
Quit buying wally world garbage that funds the chinese military machine and you won't even have a problem with the subject of tariffs.
I guess Russia will go down with rest of Europe...specially Germany.
Excellent summary. Some is maybe obvious, but it needs saying and when joined up it gives the full picture.
Great presentation. What about tariffs used to remove tariffs? Tariffs as a negotiating tool to open up trade and allow US vendors access to foreign markets? It would be an interesting discussion to talk about this approach. I suspect this usually doesn't work either. Tariffs are similar to rent control in terms of being appealing but not working. Also, I think that the USA could well re-enter manufacturing in a big way - this time making extensive use of AI + robotics + telepresence (for remote work). However, those new manufacturing jobs will not employ many people and those who are employed will primarily be technicians and software/mechanical engineers. I look for the day when technology advances can allow small companies and sole proprietorships can be competitive with large companies - so as to distribute the supply chain to many companies. Tariffs are a stupid, lizard-brain response to challenges that need to be addressed by improving the workforce education and reducing things like medical costs.
Men Exhibiting Really Cocky Egos Driving Expensive Sedans. Mercedes.
Politicians trying to fix the problems they created years ago by allowing US manufacturing to beoced to China, were there back door payments discuised as political donations.
Great explanation
The point of the tariffs isnt to protect the US industries, it is to allow US companies to jack up prices higher than the tariff value so they can increase their profits. Which will only make inflation go higher just like it has recently
Deregulation can help mitigate the consequences of tariffs. We will see.
Cdn,. here, of course the US is goingof copurse the US is going to buy more from Canada and Mexico as we have weaker currencies. tRump views Canada's $100 billion trade surplus and Mexico's as 'subsidies-he is so stupid!
The other issue that needs to be mentioned is that tarriffs even fail at their stated purpose of "protecting the industry/sector" but only often only protects existing power structures and rent-seeking in that industry. I have yet to see any proof (historical or otherwise) that it was actually beneficial to consumers (end users) or to industry (more competitive, better products) in any way. Much like the benefits of many mergers and so-called synergy that only flows to top execs, shareholders, and financiers
I used to think that tariffs and taxing the hell out of imports would help our economy. But we need to recognize that we don’t have access to all of the resources we need on our own, and that we share this lonely planet with billions of other people. We should be trying more to work together.
Ukrainians will have to invade and control Maralago for Trump to understand what's happening to their country.
Great video thanks for the details.
The problem isn't with tarrifs themselves but the way they are implemented. The examples you stated should have made that obvious. Firstly, it is important to remember that trying to change the nature of an economy takes DECADES. It will always involve short term pain. Always. Secondly, you need to implement industry specific and appropriate tax incentives, particularly concerning manufacturing. For example, in the long term it is beneficial to manufacture foreign brand cars in your own country containing locally made parts. Again, in the long run. The current globalisation situatuin did not occur overnight. It took a very long time to get to where we are now. Now, if you think that a laissez faire type of capitalism is a good thing, where you buy in at the cheapest prices from elsewhere and manufacture your goods in other counyries where labour is cheap... then good for you, but this is also a long term recipe for disaster. Pray tell, with the erosion of jobs, where are people going to work?
We can go much further back in history on tariffs. The Corn Laws in Great Britain were tariffs placed on all imported grain in order to support the farmers and landowners in Great Britain. The price of bread went up astronomically due to these tariffs and lead directly to starvation of the poor and the Irish Potato famine. No, tariffs do not work in the long run.
There are more examples of tariffs going back to 19th century and how Britain fought for “free trade” to undercut and destroy the competition. Can you illuminate us on that?
The truth is you have no idea how this will play out. You're just conjecturing.
Isn't this what the U.S. governments doing ? On a larger scale.
I really like to see more of the subject continue 27:17 however tRump is coming to power and is going to do so much more damage to America than the industry angle alone. The majority of people that voted don't know what they've done to put 45 back in, yet! Like he stands there saying he could shoot somebody on the street and wouldn't lose supporters. Why would a large crowd of humans follow that lead?
Senator Smoot was a senator from.... guess! Senator Smoot was a senator from UTAH! The Smoot-Hawley Act that increased tariffs, and it also helped deepen the Great Depression. I was just out in Utah and just got back on Tuesday, and lots of Utahns REVERE Donald Trump like they revere the leader of the LDS Church. ...my family members in Utah included. Whatever Donald Trump says they heartily agree with what president-elect Trump says CASE CLOSED!
The Conspiracy Trump is the Russian Manchurian Candidate, essentially. Let’s look at the conspiracy going on, shall we? Trump levies a 55% tariff on China, and Putin, a 60% tariff. Trump & Musk & Putin are conspiring to destroy China’s economy. Why? China holds the biggest reserves of the resources required in the production of the technological Technocracy vision of Musk, who bought himself a president, will get even bigger tax cuts and subsidies. Putin gets the end of a horrendously costly war, and the land he wanted. It’s a classic conspiracy and all the other “picks” are simply sycophants to be used to do chores. Trump is being funneled millions from bad actors or his 1% freak vampires. Further, Trump wants to annex Canada and Mexico to steal their resources. He is a traitor, and an existential threat to every aspect of our democracy.
Since this was published, Russia has used MRV's, another threat. I think the threat count is around 80 now.
They are also losing million dollar tanks to 100 dollar Ukrainian drones.
It’s hard to take you serious when you miss the biggest aspects of all this. It’s not about Trump imposing tariffs. It about Trump starting negotiations with a storm of pain and getting his opponents to cave if they don’t do what he wants. It’s called negotiating from a position of strength.
That's not how negotiation works. That's how trade wars work. That's the last thing that anyone wants.
@ you obviously haven’t observed how Trump operates.
Ukrainian here. I really hope your analysis is correct)) Our survival depends on it.
If you do not differentiate between domestic and foreign currency your analysis is worthless. They DO NOT run out of rubels in any kind of savings account, they might run out of foreign currency. Russia does not "run out of money" in a general sense because money is just double-entry bookkeeping. They might run short of foreign currency (and therefore not be able to defend the exchange rate) but that is a whole different matter. You can't make that analysis without talking about imports and exports. Russia needs foreign currency for imports, for nothing else and it needs to be able to pay those imports with currency that is accepted by the foreign sellers. This can be dollars or yuan or rupies and russia is still able to get those because they still export a lot of gas and oil, not as much as they used to maybe, but still more than enough to fund their imports. Russia can create all the rubels they need for domestic purposes and the only limit to that is inflation by exceeding domestic production capabilities and import dependencies but there is no "running out of money" rather actually running out of people, energy or material and productive capacities. War economies work by forcing the population to not use the domestic capacities so they can be used for the war effort so that additional spending doesn't become inflationary. But there has never been and will never be an issue to "find the money".
LIES UPON LIES BEING SAID HERE MOVE ON!!
I wish people would quit trying to do Peter Zeihan videos. It’s not even cool when Peter does it.
Just look at Herbert Hoover during 29-32 in the depression and see what his economic policies did. This is Trump's direct model.
Thanks!
Thanks so much for the support, Mike!
Ps Canadians are pulling together whereas Americans are falling apart as a Canadian We Will Survive. Will You? O Ya n i doing the over on 15 Trillion dollar debt this time around for The Lunatic s 4year run fyi last time it was close too 8 Trillion dollars luv from 🇨🇦
As a Canadian, he is going on about 25 percent tariffs .. Look at what we sent to you. They will all go up by 25 percent and it would cost more to try and find these in the US that it costs to get from Canada . Canada exports a diverse array of resources to the United States, with energy products being the largest category, including crude oil, natural gas, refined petroleum products, and electricity, much of which is hydroelectric power. The country also supplies coal, both thermal and metallurgical, as well as key minerals and metals like gold, silver, aluminum, and uranium. In addition, Canada exports forestry products such as lumber and paper, agricultural goods like grains, meat, and seafood, and various manufactured goods, reflecting its rich natural resources and integrated trade relationship with the U.S. I would start increasing your energy and building costs by 25 percent unless you can find spruce and oil in a new place in the USA.
We tryed once find made in USA products and it was almost imposible. And what we found are not such quality that it justify of cost of those. Most US brands are not made in USA. Greetins from Finland
Tariffs fall into two broad categories. Attempts to protect your own market or slow down the import rate of certain goods. The other is a low end tariff on goods that don't have much of an impact, but generate revenue. This means it's a bad idea to go nuts on tariffs for things that matter and you can afford to put higher tariffs on things like luxury products or things that would not have a massive impact. That's why the EU will put a 2.7% Tariff on say Milling machines, only a 1.2% tariff on the milling tool itself, but has a 17% tariff on Ski Boots.
1. Warburg is doing something that our leadership is not doing--educating America at a basic level. 2. I understand his argument for de-industrialization, but as a former head of U.S. intelligent has commented, the fact that global military confrontation is increasingly likely means that we must have an significant industrial base to support our military. China, which is now supporting Russia in Ukraine, has manufactured military equipment for the U.S. In a confrontation with China, say, over Taiwan the U.S. military could be in a vulnerable position.
Excellent review and summary of the train wreck that is coming. Where is the conductor?
Tariffs caused World War I and the Great Depression, trump will destroy America. Republicans didn’t win the last election, they surrendered to Russia, they didn’t win an election they lost our democracy, their honor and their dignity voting for Jeffrey Epstein‘s best friend, partner in child trafficking for sex. The 1950’s are not the future it’s the past that sacrificed our environment, our clean water and air for temporary production, profits and power.
The one salient immutable fact is that we always get a good crop of politicians.
unfortunately the people (orange pos) pushing the tarriff concept does not care about it's effect on consumers, he will find someone to blame all this on at a later date in time.
I voted for President Elect Trump and I'm a conservative Republican of 76 years. No Trump can't end the war quickly. He would like to but Russia will never negotiate fairly and they can't be trusted to stick to any agreement as that rotten country is "ruled" by Dictator Putin and he is a psycho! StocktonRob
Many Americans do not realize how much Americans depend on foreign-made goods. Tariffs will be devastating to our economy.
The problem is that US is dependable of China, and that means that China, wqhen the moment arrives, can, and will put US and the rest of Western countries in their knees.
I plan to buy some foreign-made equipment I need before January 20th. I hope prices do not go up, but I cannot risk 10 to 25 percent price increases. If tariffs do cause prices to go up, the machinery I am ordering now may hold onto their value longer. The threat of tariffs will cause other people to do what I am doing before January 20th.
here we go again ,you, an aspiring intellectual vs. blue collar americans this is why trump won
