The Forgotten "Program" That Started My Audio Obsession
Remember Sound Recorder? This retro audio program, bundled with Windows in the 90s, was a surprising creative playground for kids and adults alike. In this video, I explore how Sound Recorder shaped the love of digital audio for a generation of kids, the quirky ‘hacks’ we used to emulate multitrack recordings, and its fascinating limitations. If you ever played with Sound Recorder, you’ll love this trip down memory lane, with plenty of nostalgic tech demos!

Love your content
This was a fantastic video, nice and nostalgic! Well done and thank you for creating it!
It reminded me, how I used to waste much of my young time doing similar usless things. Now I'm 49 and have no time for nothing, but anyway still wasting watching this video :)
Teach them! 😂
This song was made in the 90s when WNN started
These are fantastic! please keep making episodes! would love one on Winamp/Winamp Visualizer
I got my start in audio on sound recorder. Now I’m a full time musician, and I mix and master professionally on ProTools with waves.. sound recorder on Windows XP really IS what started it all from many audio people, myself included.
Super nostalgia trip! XP was definitely the last decent OS lol. Cant wait for more of your creativity, so glad I came across your channel... thanks for you content! 90s were just the best 😅
i love how the editing style is straight out of the early 2000s
This was so nostalgic and enjoyable. Such wholesome fun too. I am now a subscriber.
I never learned that sound recorder could even possibly be hacked around to make stuff like this! I just pirated software instead lol
Thiss is Greaaaaattttt!
U forgot to mention the frauenhoffer institut blessed us for free with that an didnt take any rev share or patent payment which is unusual
Yes! The Brave Little Toaster shirt (and more)
I had so much fun making wacky sound collages to make my brother laugh. Using the crummy gateway 2000 microphone to record tv clips, sound palindromes, Simpsons quotes, banging on a Casio keyboard, crude sound effects. Just keep adding more and messing with the speed and echo. What fun memories.
You had me at "nerdy"!
I had the Rio 600 32 MB as my first MP3 player. And no I didn't miss a zero: it was 32 MB...
as a music experimenting enthusiast, i totally like the original recording :) noises there remind of average computer fan noises so it creates additional vibes
My sister and I played Storybook Weaver so much as kids. This makes me want to make my gen-alpha nephew try it
I,m still using a FireWire card for my DAW surface controlller. Last time I used it to transfer video was around 4 years ago.
I also started on SoundRecorder! I recorded my first three "albums" on a laptop running Windows 2000 that would crash (and now I know why thanks to your video! I probably had very little RAM.) It was a game changer getting a desktop PC running Windows XP, it felt limitless and I would transfer my files there to edit them all together. It was all very weird and experimental sounding stuff. Such a formative program in my early music life!
Normalise in soundforge
I remember my first non cd drive MP3 player was a Nomad Jukebox, I then got a Nomad Jukebox 2. I gave my buddy dan the old Nomad Jukebox and he still has it, it has a bunch of old local bands on it and our early attempts of recording in late highschool early college days.
cassette tape, SOUND RECORDER, audacity, Kristal, cool edit, flstudio, cubase 5, prootools and now STUDIO ONE
Yo! me and my sister used to play so much with this thing, we used to record silly stuff all afternoon laughing our asses off. We had a blast
90's videos games i remember from elementary school in the early 90's The amazon trail, Mavis beacon teaches typing Non educational games that people probably don't remember: Commander Keen Hugo's House of Horrors Kingdom O Magic Trophy Bass Earthsiege 2
I loved Commander Keen! And my grandpa used to play Trophy Bass 😂
Minha primeira DAW. Desbloqueou boas memórias, lembro de gravar multipista com uma flauta doce.
yep I remember
daniel johnston type shit
Sound Recorder was one of the BEST things I had found during my college years. I miss it so much. If it wasn't for me finding out how to work it better, I wouldn't have learned how to produce and write songs using it. Very integral to my formative years as a songwriter.
I discovered this channel today and I'm so happy I did. Multi-talented! This was also my first sound recorder on my Windows 98 PC (that I still have!) and I used it primarily to dub my PowerPoint animations. I kept them all and they're wonderfully awful to listen to. 😊 Looking forward to watching more from your channel!
I did this same exact stuff in Windows 98, except why the hell would you keep re-recording the previous track by playing it back through the speaker?! just record separate tracks and then mix/stack them! I used to do it by just keeping tempo by memorization, as in I didn't listen to the previous track/layer at all. Made me pretty good with tempos lol! having it continue going through the speakers just degrades the quality each time. obviously anyone doing this isn't doing it professionally, but, still, seems like a goofy choice due to that fact. however, it was a great idea to play back the previous track/layer through another program, must have been WMP I think you said? I did not think to do that back in the day, wish I did, would have made it easier to keep tempo between each layer. I was just doing a guitar and bass, multiple guitars though. so 3 or 4 files would be mixed/stacked at the end of a "song" lol
Very nostalgic indeed :) Cool video, thanks! Just a little nerdy detail, but I loved the transition from the camera audio to the Sound Recorder at 8:46 :)
That "Sound Recorder Song" was great, and put a smile on my face
Oh wow. You seriously unlocked some memories with this one! I forgot how much I played around with this.
Thank you so much for doing this. I love Storybook Weaver. And also Hollywood by Theatrix!
i Love this!!!!
why is fiona apple teaching me this
I love your channel
I got a 64mb Rio 500 as a graduation gift in 2000. MP3 CD's were the game changer before I got my iPod mini in 2004.
I used this in 99 or 00 to reverse some reversed-vocals lol. PanterA's Phil Anselmo was fucking with all the people about subliminal messaging on their Dracula 2000 soundtrack song.
Back in Windows NT 4.0 I've recorded any chords on a keyboard, looped forward, backward, faster, slower and put it all together. After that, it sounded like a train, just like the beginning of Station To Station from David Bowie!
Haha. Thanks for the fun video. Cool Edit '96 quickly became my main program for this kind of stuff in the mid-to-late 90s. It had awesome features like noise reduction, multiple tracks and so much more; it was my first "shareware" utility purchase. Did you ever try that app, Harke? However, I do remember playing with Sound Recorder's quirky features. :D
Very impressive video presentation and editing style. Great job!
the Daisy dancers should have been BonziBuddies, that's the only reason i know that song
I mess about with WhatsApp overdubs between my phone and my laptop, Use one for playback the other to record. I sometimes use it to do a "reaction" to a voicemail. Adding background Foley on a TH-cam tab is also good fun.
I'm kinda fascinated of these old laptops. Bought an thinkpad X200 from 2009 and it's not the hardcore machine but it works pretty good and also perfectly with Linux :D
5:36 Weird Al reference!
Wow that's catchy
Cool channel, content takes me back 😊, thanks 👍
