A biology education channel. Join me as i try to explain the different elements of Biology, starting with the basic concepts and evolving through to the more complex aspects, just like life on this planet has done (although hopefully not over thousands of years).
Coronavirus (COVID-19): What does it do and how to stop it spreading?
Coronavirus has been spreading rapidly around the world, putting immense pressure on governments and healthcare systems around the world, not to mention the economy.
But what does it actually do to you if you become infected, and why has it been so easy to pass the virus on to other people without even realising it?
Over a million people have now been confirmed to have the virus, with over 65,000 dead at the time of uploading this video according to statistics from the John Hopkins University, which can be found in the regularly updated tracking map here:
www.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6
To cut a long story short, keep washing yourself and surfaces with soap, as this will kill the virus and stay away from other people (around 2 metres) as you don't know if they are carrying the virus and will infect you! Staying home is the best way to stop yourself from contracting this virus.
This pandemic is an evolving scenario, and details here may become incorrect over time as more about this virus is discovered.

Decoding DNA
มุมมอง 1.7K5 ปีที่แล้ว
Our DNA is the instruction manual for everything that our cells do, with one of its role being the blueprints for manufacturing proteins. The nucleic acid molecules that make up DNA have a specific order in our genes that tells the cell's ribosomes which amino acid needs to be added to the protein next in the translation process. The ribosomes read these molecules in sets of 3 (called a codon) ...
Protein Structure - Beginners Biology
มุมมอง 2.3K5 ปีที่แล้ว
The structure of proteins is critical for their ability to function correctly. From the order and location of amino acids to the whole overall shape, everything has its place for a reason. Here I describe the absolute basics of protein structure, and how the four different levels are determined. Whilst some parts of a protein may seem like they are unnessesary, even a small change such as a sin...
Proteins - Beginners Biology
มุมมอง 4.8K6 ปีที่แล้ว
Proteins are the molecules responsible for a the majority of functions in all living organisms. From breaking down food to repairing and maintaining our cells and DNA, these molecules are involved in one way or another. This introduction to these important molecules gives a simple overview of how they are made and examples of how they contribute to running our cells.
Units & Magnitudes: Beginners Biology
มุมมอง 11K6 ปีที่แล้ว
Units and magnitudes are important for communicating with other people. Recipes for cooking and building measurements are good examples of how these work, with ranges in sizes giving an introduction to how magnitudes work. In this episode of Beginners Biology, I aim to introduce you to the units that you didn't know you used, the ones commonly used in biology and a range of magnitudes that are ...
Beginners Biology: Genes and Inheritance
มุมมอง 13K6 ปีที่แล้ว
What are Genes? How do we inherit them? Find out here in Beginners Biology! Your genes are what make you unique compared to all other humans on this planet. These genes are given to us by our parents and we inherit some of their characteristics based on which genes they pass down. This video will explain these concepts and use the examples of eye colour and blood groups, whilst also mentioning ...
Beginners Biology: Transcription and Translation
มุมมอง 20K6 ปีที่แล้ว
Transcription and Translation are the biological processes that allow the information stored in our DNA to be turned into the functional proteins that we need. This is a brief overview of the stages involved in these processes to try and help newcomers understand what is going on.
Beginners Biology: Introduction to DNA
มุมมอง 20K6 ปีที่แล้ว
Our DNA is the thing that makes us who we are, and what makes every organism unique compared to all other life on this planet. Here I give a quick introduction to what DNA is and how it is used. This is a brief overview of this important molecule with further videos explaining the importance of it coming in the future, so stay tuned! Beginners Biology: Overview of Cells
มุมมอง 24K7 ปีที่แล้ว
This video is a brief introduction to cells, aimed at beginners to Biology who want to understand more about the field. Cells are the basic structure that make up the majority of the life forms on this planet. Here we explore a basic model of different cell types and what can be found inside. These will be explored in more detail at a later date. This video is going to be part of a planned seri...
Interesting. But that's not sterilised right?
Can I use powdered dried yeast?
Other sources suggest using beef broth? Would that be okay too?
Get this man a nobel prize.
Can this be used for mushroom mycelium?
Could I use marmite instead of the yeast acstract?
do you have to store agar plates in the fridge ? also when you put culture in them do they have to be stored in the fridge?
Nice!
Hello Doc. what's the salt for? (add salt- but use reduced salt yeast extract) Its the only recipe Ive seen using salt.
Looks like Elon Musk. 🤔
great video... i have a question if i may ... I'm searching for a substitute for agar agar, i intend to use it to cultivate mycelium for mushroom cultivation... the gelatine works the same? i had the impression that it needed to be vegetarian like agar....?
elon?
Thank you!! Getting stuff together now ❤️
Dr: Can I use this to do tissue culture please: orchid, hellebore.. ?
Very good! I was wondering where to buy the expensive agar!
Can i use this for growing orchid seeds?
I think agar is the better solution as it is vegetarian made from seaweed or something like that where as gelatin is animal made product, orchid seeds best on agar I think with the right nutrient balances for growth and roots , search you tube on tissue culture , there are amazing videos out there for seed and tissue growing with orchids and other plants and fungi that might interest you , good luck .
it is very interesting thank you very much
Hi can sea salt be used
thank you for sharing Doctor.....i am doing aquaculture farm here....trying my best to make tcbs agar plate.....not very sure what to do until i see your video !!!! thanks
Dr C, can one actually incubate these (home-made) dishes at 37 degrees? Or will it melt the gelatine?
Hey at first thougth i think this will work fine, gelatin melt at 35 C. but the added ingrediense will increase the boilding point. Such as salt. also works the other way around and make snow melt at lower temp.
The elon musk of microbiology
You say these are agar plates but they're not, they're gelatin.
Gelatin is ok too, agar is just better.
Do we really need gelatin?
keep up the great work!
Can I pour the agar in a still air box? Instead of the flow hood?
Ever use xanthine gum or gum Arabic?
May you tell me if your plates stay solidified at room temperature/incubator temperatures because mine surely does not.
What can I do to be your PhD student?
why add yeast?
Thanks for helping me on my science experiment!
Some sources suggest to use agar agar powder alone and boil it in sterile water - I tried this, but it turned out a clear but cloudy colour and caused my sister’s science fair project to fail. Other sources are similar to your method, which turn out yellow. I’m confused on the difference and why salt and yeast extract are used for some but not others.
Thank you so much 💖💖💖
6:58 table top is cold, temperature difference created a condensation on the glass.
Hi, why does my petri dish didn't solidify? I used 1tsp sugar, 1tbsp agar, 1 knorr cube and 1/2 cup of boiled water
Thank you bootleg elon musk you helped me
Thanks, mate. Actually, I've been looking for a video on how to make these to grow mushrooms for months. But all the other videos talk about using agar and pressure cookers. Things most people don't have!!!
Sir now it's cold in my country should I want to leave it in room temp or I want to incubate in any hot place?
Great video! I was very confused until i saw this. Can I use agar 🧫powder instead of the yeast, salt and gelatin?
yes, i believe this is just an at home alternative
Links dont work
What if I don't have yeast extract?
hello, your recipe looks great HOWEVER, i cannot buy yeast extract, it is just not available anywhere in my country, i can buy yeast, which looks like a bar of butter, it is completely solid. can i replace the yeast extract with something else like honey for example if yes should add the same amount like u adding yeast that is using your proportions but with honey?
i want to make culture media for tissue culture.... can this type of medium is helpful or not?
Good morning I am from the India , sir how make a pure liquid culture for the Mushrooms
ohh this is our experiment project
My gelatin solidifies in fridge but when I get them out yo plate bacteria on them, the gelatin melts. Any suggestion plz?
My gelatin does not solidify at room temp. Any suggestions?
Very nice. Back yard tinkering have us guys like Tesla and the Curries.
What is the salt for?
British table salt? Fuck mate, I'm screwed. I live in the US. Can you ship me some?
Can i use something else instead of yeast extract
