Italian American Podcast Ep: 338 When Two Little Italy Collide: The North End Meets Mulberry Street
In this lively episode of the Italian American Podcast, we welcome special guests from Boston, two brothers and their sister, who share their expertise on Italian feasts and the fascinating blend of their Irish and Italian heritage. Listen in as we prepare for the iconic Festa delle Tutte Feste, San Gennaro, and explore the strategic, and sometimes contentious, planning that goes into these significant cultural events. We'll reflect on the cultural dynamics between Italian and Irish communities and the contrasting attitudes toward unity and leadership within these vibrant cultures.
Our journey continues with a nostalgic look at New York City's historic neighborhoods and the evolution of the San Gennaro Feast into a multi-ethnic celebration. We reminisce about the Italian heritage, the transformation of these communities, and the broader cultural shifts that have shaped New York over the years. The discussion is enriched with memories of local delicacies and historical holidays that have faded over time, painting a vivid picture of a bygone era and its lasting impact on the city's cultural landscape.
We then explore the culinary and cultural traditions of Italian American neighborhoods in Boston and New York, highlighting unique dishes and festive street life. The conversation touches on memorable dining experiences, the importance of local connections, and the vibrant atmosphere during Italian feasts. Special mentions include notable Italian personalities and the traditions like the passeggiata, which add depth to our appreciation of these tight knit communities. Finally, we reflect on the enduring pride, familial ties, and playful rivalries that bind these cultures together, leaving you with a rich tapestry of Italian American life.

    As an Italian person that works a lot with American tourism (I work by the Pompeii ruins) I have to say this podcast is so great in order to understand something about the rich history of Italian American. One small note, I feel like this episode was too much about the importance of this two men rather than the actual work they made. By the end of the episode I feel like I knew a lot about those guys but not a lot about Italian American history

    It’s sad that Italian American writers never getting noticed . If you don’t search for them in search engines you will never find them . I think because so many go into real estate and law they don’t care about creativity just lots of money . I don’t understand why many do not like to read I find it strange and disturbing.

    Sorry to say that unlike other ethnic, racial, religious or sexual orientation groups, Italian-Americans are a lot different. They do not stick together, defend each other or their history and culture, vote as a bloc, protest. Plus many can't pronounce their own names. No one is afraid of us, politicians do not pay attention, and Hollywood has no reservations of negatively portraying us. As proud as I am, I also admit that much of our problem is our own inaction.

    Another great episode. I always learn so much from your videos. I know what you mean about confused family relations. My father was my second cousin's uncle and cousin at the same time. Same thing about someone dying and another family member stepping in. None of it was direct blood relations but because of marriage. It was so confusing. I thought I could follow the lineage at one time but at my age it's too convoluted to keep up with. By the way, I love watching your videos after a meal while sipping a little grappa and then taking a nap. Like I said I'm old.

    Not to belabor this, what makes The Godfather 2 (and The Godfather) such great films, are all the aspects of the story and craft that are not related to the mafia. And when you spend time with these films, you understand that organized crime is not limited to the mafia, rather it manifests in many cultures and many avenues of society especially the legitimate ones. I’m not certain The Godfather (s) lionize the mafia; they lionize the Corleone family. Furthermore, in accordance with Athenian tragedy of the 5th century BC, the heroes who are lionized are ultimately consumed by their choices and their strength.

  • @Sidera17
    @Sidera17 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I think what the man talking about Vito is trying to get at is not just "Mafia concepts." The idea of the Mafia is baked into American cinema as a genre, but in something like The Godfather (and you can even find caricatured versions of this in comedies like Moonstruck which has no Mafia), is the portrayal of the idea of "family" interpolated through a specific ethnic, cultural, American immigrant experience. It's portrayed as a very interpersonal, duty-driven, slightly clannish understanding of how the individuals in a family unit are intertwined into each othera' lives and understand each family as a "unit." It strikes me as such an ethnically coded part of Southern Italian immigrant culture that even the Mafia builds its structure off of these principles. This very specific idea of what family meant drove the narrative arc of the characters in their positive and negative impulses, but their is truth in how the cultural perception is coded. In a positive light, like the man says, it can be an extremely powerful set of values to live by. I think that's why he found the line beautiful.

    "The Sopranos" and "Godfather" movies: "Take them out of the context": Exactly. Yet, for some reason, the great majority of Italian Americans can't do this. It is very simple: form and content. D.W. Griffith's civil war epic, "Birth of a Nation" (1915)? Form is brilliant (its craftsmanship). Its content is horrific (it lionizes the Ku Klux Klan). Leni Reifenstahl's 1934 documentary "Triumph of the Will?" Form is brilliant (its craftsmanship). Its content is horrific (it lionizes the Nazis). " The Godfather" and "The Sopranos?" Forms are brilliant (their craftsmanship). The contents are horrific (they lionize "the mafia" as central to Italian American culture, which it was not). Art doesn't always sanctify stereotypes. It is a lesson we need to apply to mob movies.
