Italian American Podcast Ep.347 Our Christmas Eve Italian American Festivities with Francesco Sedita
There was a time when my grandmother's honey cookies were the highlight of every Christmas, their sweet aroma filling the kitchen and signaling the start of the festive season. Our latest episode of the Italian American Podcast takes you on a nostalgic journey with personal stories like these, unraveling the threads of Italian American traditions that bind our community together. From the meticulous selection of ricotta cheese to the unexpected pastina hoarding frenzy, we explore how the evolution of food trends has shaped our cultural practices. Despite shifting attitudes toward carbohydrates, the essence of Italian American cuisine continues to flourish in our kitchens and at our tables, celebrated through the joy of sharing and adapting cherished recipes.
Our guest, an insightful author and illustrator, joins us to share the creative processes behind their graphic novels and children's books that beautifully capture the nuances of Italian American life. Their work offers an authentic portrayal of family dynamics, weaving stories that resonate with our own experiences of festive gatherings and holiday traditions. We discuss how their upbringing in a family full of books contrasts with the stereotype of Italian Americans as less engaged readers, emphasizing the communal nature of our culture and its influence on storytelling. As we celebrate the vibrant creativity within our community, we also touch on the challenges and opportunities in the literary world, encouraging support for Italian American authors.
Finally, we journey through beloved holiday customs, from the spirited chaos of Christmas Eve to the tranquil celebrations of Christmas Day, highlighting how these traditions evolve over time. Stories of Midnight Mass, the Feast of the Seven Fishes, and the unique blend of Italian and Polish influences in our holiday meals paint a vivid picture of cultural adaptation and family bonds. Amidst these reflections, we find humor and warmth in our narratives, capturing the essence of Italian American life. Join us in this heartwarming episode as we honor our roots while embracing the changes that come with each passing generation.
Experience the richness of Italian heritage through our guest's creative journey in literature, crafting stories that reflect the vibrant spirit of family and tradition, including a captivating graphic novel series and a heartfelt children's book.
Support Italian American authors while we debunk the stereotype of a community less engaged with literature. Dive into the world of Italian American storytelling and its unique cultural nuances, as our guest shares the challenges and joys of portraying authentic family dynamics. From tricolor cookies to the tactile joy of physical books, celebrate the enduring value of cultural traditions and the role of storytelling in fostering community bonds.

Those ribbon cookies are a Polish dessert with a "close enough" dough used in pignolata (struffoli), rosettes, etc that it was a crossover dish in many ethnic enclaves across the country.
More like feast of the seven chins.
thanks Sal
Love to be on this show and tell my family story
Bravo Tutto Amore
Pat, I ask MT and my husband every AM what they want to eat in the evening !!! Still old school. I Share the podcast all the time !!! Rossetta honey cookie, made by my Sicilian great aunts and taught to my Basilicata nonna and my mom!!! My Salerno side had sausage and peppers after midnight mass. Sorry you say rossetta later in podcast. NOTE: My grandmothers left Italy to ensure their children could learn to read and write and their grandchildren graduate college and post graduate degrees. Books were always a Christmas and Birthday gift in my family !! Need to read a book not a device as written books make the eye muscles work harder and strengthen eye muscles very important for children also turning the pages of book for hand muscle strengthening and muscle grading.
amo l'Italia❤
The whole while I was amazed at how much Francesco looks like Sal Vulcano of Impractical Jokers. Content was good, just wished you had spent more time on the specifics surrounding Italian Christmas Eve. Smelts, calamari, fennel, cardoon, castagne, scopa, briscola, cartellate pastries, struffoli, etc. It's all good guys.
I would rather have a "real" book in my hand also..
There is no american italian
Love the show, I’m an Italian from California.
tu non 6 italiano
Ti senti meglio con te stesso adesso?

Italian Americans we have more opportunities. Salute. Same blood tho.🇮🇹✌🏼🇺🇸
0.44 pounds so under 1/2 a pound but basically 3/4 a pound
Homie got no neck
Little ed
Love listening to Sal!
Oh the ''great'' stand up comedian who has a lack of creativity, so all his ''work'' is about Italians and making fun of them. Luckily, we Italians (the real Italians from Italy) are completely different from those characters.
Are you Italian or American ?
Beautiful ❤❤❤❤from Ottawa Canada ❤❤❤❤❤
Looks great but honestly after living so long in NYC South Brooklyn is a neighborhood I am not familiar with.
This is only one of the many scenarios that came from some of the parental peptalks we got as kids which all served as a purpose to remind us as kids, that hey -if we ever “randomly” get brutally murdered, just know we will protect you to death and that we love you. And me and my bro are just like “ well okayyyyyyy uhhhh….? Ok thennn… We love you too, thank you.”
4:40 Mid-1950s Fiat 1100 (Tipo 103) in front of the winery.
Peppino no pepino
Vagliò You need another “p” on your shirt stronzo. “Peppino”
💓💓💓Chicoria (chicoree). Every time I buy a tiny bunch of "dandelions" at the store for $2.99. I know Grandma is both spinning and laughing in her grave (she picked her chicoria along Northwest Highway in Chicago). Such a fabulous episode. Thank you all!
Cicoria also means “pussy” in some italian dialects😂. Che bella cicoria!
What a great guest
Terrifico! If you look behind John Viola, there is the CREST of Sicily, and WITHIN the Crest/ Emblema di Sicilia you will find the Flags of Castilla(Spain) the red and yellow colors of Isabella and Ferdinando from Spain; and you will also see the Flag of Borgundy which is also Spain, and you will see the Flag of Aragon, which again is a kingdom of Spain, AND you will see the Flag of CATALUNYA (Catalano) which TOO is a Spanish Kingdom. SO, (not Spain, but Holy Roman (where Spain is located today) was MORE influential to Southern Italy than Italian. "Italian" was so limited to Firenze, and the Puglia, Umbrian areas of where italy is today, and hardly none of that if anything ever influenced the south of Italy. Southern Italy is More Spanish than Italian--
Love you all, great podcast episode !! Shirts same or not it does not matter because the content is what matters !!! Content is always excellent
You have no followers 😢😢😢😢
Luizzi’s is my absolute favorite. Quality and wonderful customer service!!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Perché non sono cose vere? Certo che è tutto vero!!!
Lol love it
Cari IA Podcast hosts John Viola, Prof Patrick O'Boyle and Brandon Ficarra and Sal Off the Boat Vella, your conversation this evening brought back memories of my childhood. My lesson this evening was how Sal explained his appreciation for the many dimensions of the Italian experience; "he loves all of it!" Brandon Ficarra and Patrick O'Boyle engaged in banter that made me laugh for their stage talent. Ragazzi, the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania suburbs offer Parx casino's Xcite center for your shared comedy dialogue! John Viola, your hospitality for all of your guests over the years reminds me of the depth of conversation and sense of humor that we share as we log in week after week! As Sal Off the Boat Vella said that he has been listening to your podcast for years and is honored to be invited! I also share everyone's hopeful and enthusiastic sentiment! Buona settimana a voi tutti! 🤩🔔🗽❤💚💯
My grandmother will fill the plastic milk jugs with stones from the driveway and then put them in the recycling!
Why
I would Definitely buy a shirt saying “Pat’s other shirt” with the Italian American Logo on it!!
Sal off the Boat, a man with so many interesting stories, a man of Italian culture. I hope Sal has learned that a great many of us go to McDonald's strictly to use _il gabinetto_ and nothing else. Also, a lot of us still peel fruit since the "alar scare". It's tastier to it eat that way anyhow. Thanks for reading. 👍
Pat nobody cares if you change your shirt or not as long as it’s clean. My Giardiello Great Grandparents came from Benevento near Napoli. My Ferraro Great Grandparents came from Cleto, Calabria. I’ve seen Sal on the Growing Up Italian podcast too. Keep up the Great work!!! - Nick
If voice doesn't match the face was a person. It would be that big guy in the black shirt
I can't remember what I had for breakfast. Do you think I would really remember what you were wearing on a podcast a week ago? Love the podcast, thanks for all your effort putting it together.
I love Italian Americans so much, Parlo Italiano cosi cosi.🥰🤗😍
That guy in the black polo, really sticking his neck out to get that sitcom made
This the #1 show on Neckflix
These Americans are your people. Come take them back, please.
😂😂😂
That dude neck has been eaten by his body!
If you're from the US, you're not Italian. If you grew up in America, surrounded by Americans, inheriting their culture, then you're not Italian, and it doesn't matter if your great-great-grand uncle came from Sicily. You may have an Italian surname, but you are American. You may speak a couple of broken words in some Italian dialect that doesn't exist any more but that doesn't make you Italian. You may have Italian citizenship thanks to your great-great-great-great-grandparents and to questionable Italian nationality laws. But you aren't and will never be Italian. You were raised in USA. You went to American schools. You have American friends, You speak English in a thick American accent. You watch US TV shows. You support the US national team. Your relatives were born in America. You have no clue of the Italian culture of the last 150 years. You couldn't name 10 cities in Italy. You couldn't name 10 songs from Italy... and I could keep going. You have to be raised in Italy to be Italian.
John, my amico from Columbus Ohio knows Lena and Louie Prima Jr . His name is Ray Massa and his band is called Ray Massa’s Euro Rythems , they play all over the USA . I admire you very much for your love of our culture ! I was born in Citta Palermo ( La Vucciria ) and I am moving back in the early fall of 2025 . My heart has always been there and I should have moved back there thirty years ago. Keep up the good work and I hope to meet you some day and please say hello to that beautiful Donna Siciliana for me . Tell her I will buy her a canollo at Villabate Alba If I ever see her there ! Best Regards, Pasquale Ventura
