Tenaya Lake Paddleboarding + a hike up Lembert Dome
On July 28th 2023 Deja and I got up early at home in Mammoth and drove up into Yosemite, entering the park via the Tioga Pass gate around 8am. There was about 5 cars ahead of us so we didn't have to wait too long. It helps to get into the park early to avoid lines and crowds and so that it's easier to get a parking spot. The wind often picks up midmorning so we've been trying to get going at a decent time because no one likes battling the wind while trying to paddle!
We started paddle boarding around 8:45am, putting in at the beach on the northwest shore across from the Murphy Creek trailhead. It was such a nice morning out on the lake! You get such great views while out on the water, including looking at some impressive peaks such as Mount Conness, Clouds Rest, Mount Hoffman, and Tenaya Peak. Some of the iconic granite domes of the Yosemite high country are on great display too, including Polly Dome, Stately Pleasure Dome, and Pywiack Dome. So much amazing scenery to look at while cruising around on a SUP! Tenaya Lake might be my favorite place to paddleboard. We paddled about 3.5 miles in 2.5 hours while mostly circumnavigating the lake staying near to the shore.
After getting off the lake we changed and drove back east and parked near the Tuolumne Meadows ranger station. From there we started the short hike up Lembert Dome. From the top you get great views of the high country, especially the lush green meadows (still partly flooded after a big winter), Cathedral Range, and the Sierra Crest. Lembert Dome hike was 2.7 miles round trip with about 900ft elevation gain.

Snowmobile Adventures at Mammoth Mountain - January 2023

Bear swimming in Lake Mary (Mammoth, CA)

On a beautiful late-summer afternoon this California Black Bear decided to cool off with a swim in Lake Mary in the Mammoth Lakes Basin. I was actually swimming in the lake also when a pontoon boat pulled up nearby and were kindly alerting me and others to the bear walking along the shoreline so that we could be sure to stay out of its path. Backpacking 3 nights in Sabrina Basin

Sabrina Basin is an amazing place to spend a few nights! Or even to venture into as a longer day hike. Either way, be ready to gain at least 1,500 feet from Sabrina Reservoir to get to the first of many lakes. This is the price of entry, but one worth your while. There are some spectacular alpine areas back there, with views of glacially fed turquoise lakes and towering 13,000ft peaks. The peak...

Hiking up Bloody Mountain from the bottom of Laurel Lakes Road
มุมมอง 3232 ปีที่แล้ว
On June 27th 2022 I hiked up Bloody Mountain, all the way from the base of Laurel Lakes Road where it meets Sherwin Creek Road. You can drive up Laurel Lakes Road to make your hike a lot shorter, but that most certainly requires a high clearance vehicle and some off-road driving experience, as this unmaintained “road” is very rough, rocky, and rutted. Since I was going to do it the long and har...

      I'm not totally sure but I would guess right now it's probably highs in the upper 60s up by Cloverleaf and overnight lows around 40. Haven't talked to anyone who has been out that recently so haven't heard if there's much snow. I would guess it's clear in open and south facing areas, and there might be snow patches in north facing areas particularly higher up in the basin.

    Thanks for the great video. Our family has camped and fished from the shore at Silver Lake since 1955. Your video showed me areas on Rush Creek that I have never seen before and had always been curious about, especially that little island. I remember the bridge to that island as a kid. They used to sell post cards with the island and bridge back in the day. Wish I could paddle board like you did, but at age 75, that isn't an option anymore.

    I've heard a number of PCT hikers say they're disappointed they didn't see a single bear on their entire trek. I always think all they need to do is go down to Lake Mary or Lake George and they'll see a bear. I only go there during summer but it's rare not to see at least one bear around there.

    • @GT-mn3bx
      @GT-mn3bx ปีที่แล้ว

      Mostly because hikers are making too much noise. Bears(all wildlife) really wants nothing to do with people.

    • @mammothjoe
      @mammothjoe ปีที่แล้ว

      I would have to agree! I think I saw 3 bears total in the 6 months I was on the PCT. Usually see more around the Lakes Basin or in the town of Mammoth than out in the backcountry. Food is too easily accessible from the campgrounds, dumpsters, picnic tables, fishermen, etc.

    • @rkatrails
      @rkatrails ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mammothjoe Yep, that's the draw for bears.

  • @rkatrails
    @rkatrails ปีที่แล้ว

    Very impressive. I never had that kind of wind even when I was a kid. I would struggle to do that as a day hike. However, I do plan to do an overnight backpacking trip, staying overnight at Deer Lakes next summer. I really liked the footage you captured of the use trail leading up to, and then down the tallus slope to Deer Lakes. I could actually see the trail though it looks a little obscure, but that's the part I've been concerned about, will I be able to find the route up the tallus? I plan to start from the Crystal Lake trail, opposite the way you went. Anyway, great video

    • @mammothjoe
      @mammothjoe ปีที่แล้ว

      It would be nice to spend a night over at Deer Lakes, I hope to do it one day too. Definitely pretty back there. The trail can get a little faint in places going through the basin from the more northern lake to the easternmost lake and up to the talus field, but usually you can still at least see footprints or other evidence of where people have walked. What makes it a bit easier though is that the talus field lays at the base of a notch in the ridge, so really if you aim for that you should find your way just fine. Hope that helps. Sorry for not responding sooner. Thanks for checking out the video.

    • @rkatrails

      November can be really variable! There has been years where we've gotten snow in late-September. Last year we got 30 inches of snow in the month of October. I'll be replicating the first part of your trip, to Big McGee Lake, in a few weeks, but will be turning onto a different trail there. In GaiaGPS I laid out your route, which the app measured as 33 miles--which looks about right, since your last day of 17 miles seems to be about half the total distance. I'm sure it felt like 45 miles though! I appreciate your allowing ambient sounds largely to speak for themselves. Too many hikers overlay (often inappropriate) music throughout their videos, but I think the sound of the wind, water, and wildlife almost always is preferable--and more interesting. Best wishes on your next hike--be sure to film it!

    • @mammothjoe
      @mammothjoe 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice! Have a great time out there. I'm sure if I hiked this route directly from point to point it would have been 33 miles, but I since I was going off trail in some areas to explore the alpine basins I ended up recording a total of 45 miles on my GPS device. As for the sounds I agree, sometimes its nice to have a little bit of music or something but if there are some great sounds of nature then those are always better!
